Test drive video

Being a sports car, and one born from group B rallying madness on top, of course the first thing we decided to test was its 0-100 acceleration. The 16TI does not dissapoint, it reaches 100 in a matter of a few seconds effortlessly, in the high 2nd gear. It’s just a matter of launching, and shifting up once.

Next we decided to take it easy, and it’s amazing how easily this car can transition to calm driving. As if it had two personalities, this car can also be a very relaxing cruiser. It is much more comfortable than we expected, in great part thanks to its hydropneumatic suspension. But the interior is too, better than what we thought we would see. Its panels and seats are clearly designed to save weight, yet without going into mediocre or uncomfortable territory. The seats are perfectly sculpted to hold the passengers during spirited driving or long relaxed cruising alike. And the electronics and enterntainment are certainly far from basic, having a fancy digidash and a very good audio system for 80s standards.

All this comfort does not come at the expense of driving by any means though. “Firm hydropneumatic suspension” may sound oxymoronic at first, but that is just what this car has, and it keeps the driver in full control all the time, surfing over bumps and corners alike with ease. The car is quick beyond 100km/h too, as demonstrated by our dam acceleration test and later on the uphill road. 250hp may sometimes sound low by today’s sports cars’ standards, but it is absolutely wonderful when you have a vehicle that weighs little over 1.1 tons. The brakes can reliably stop the car if applied confidently, yet aren’t too grabby nor are they quick to lock the wheels. This combination of good power/weight and good brakes allowed us to complete a couple of risky overtaking on a steeply inclined mountain road without breaking a sweat.

Of course, this car does have its disadvantages, but most of them would be pretty expected. Early 80s turbochargers are not miraculous, and it shows: the car lacks power at lower RPM, and is pretty anemic near idle compared to its full potential, but this at least can make it forgiving for city driving or parking. Sound insulation is used sparingly, road noise isn’t too much of a problem but the engine noise is constant. And, naturally, fuel economy was definitely not a concern when designing this car, but then again, anyone looking for a car like this wouldn’t probably be bothered too much by that.
