TMCC36 - Razor's Edge (DONE, Winner Announced!)

Previous Round

TMCC36 - Razor’s Edge

Honolulu, July 2024

After the lengthy writer and actor strikes of 2023, The Network has decided to pursue the reboot of one of their historic shows, “Razor’s Edge”. Following a recently discharged Marine named James Mitchell, Razor’s Edge thrusts Mitchell into the seedy criminal underworld on The Big Island, working as a fixer for those who pay top dollar. The original series from the 80s used a Bizzaro Corvo 7000 as its hero car, but times have changed, and now The Network is looking for a fast and stylish supercar to be the hero in the rebooted Razor’s Edge.

Rules

  • Trim/Variant Year - 2020

  • $120,000 autobucks maximum.

  • 2 door coupe bodies only.

  • Wheelbase between 2.3 to 3.0m, standard rounding rules apply.

  • At least 2 seats.

  • At least standard 10s safety.

  • Radial tires are required, and must end in 5. Race tires are not allowed.

  • a 3-way catalytic converter (either kind) and at least one muffler is required.

  • 98 RON/93 AKI fuel maximum. You may use a lower grade fuel, though it offers no benefit.

  • No V16s, no race parts.

  • 1000 horsepower maximum.

  • Your car must achieve WES 9 or better.

  • Interiors are not required.

  • Legacy car bodies (it should say “Legacy Car Bodies” in the mod name) are not allowed.

Techpool

All entrants are allowed 100M in total techpool budget. This is the sum of the total car and engine techpool values, as shown in the above screenshot.

If you’ve had trouble with techpool exporting incorrectly in the past, you may include a screenshot of your techpool values in the same DM as your submission- I will then compare the in-game numbers to the numbers listed in the screenshot, and will edit them if necessary. However, if you do not send a screenshot of your techpool values and they end up incorrect- or if the values in your included screenshot are also wrong, you will be binned.

Negative techpool is not allowed.

Styling Guide

  • All cars must look road legal; as in they should have headlights and taillights, turn signals, wipers, etc etc. In short, it should look like a car that could feasibly exist - a good looking one at that as per the priorities in the next section.

  • Advanced trim settings are allowed- however, you are not allowed to make the car look like something that it isn’t using them.

  • There are no limits on downforce, but keeping in mind that I am not looking for track cars, do try to keep it reasonable.

Priorities

:star: :star: :star: :star:

Design

As a hero car, The Network wants something that’s well designed and looks stunning from any angle. Something that looks slapped together and poorly made, need not apply.
OOC - I seriously urge people to take their time with designs, I’m giving you plenty of time to work on a design, and I’m not requiring you to split your focus and do an interior either. I’ve been accused of weighting design too heavily without outright saying it before, so I’m gonna cut the nonsense and make it clear from the jump.

:star: :star: :star:

Realism

OOC- This is a very unrestricted brief, both in terms of budget and in techpool. However, I still want to see cars that would feasibly exist, with engineering choices that make sense for the kind of car that you’re making. Furthermore, I do not want to see Chirons, Jeskos, etc etc. This isn’t the brief for that - and it isn’t the brief for track specials like the Bolide, the Senna and such either. Be smart with the decisions that you make, because I reserve the right to bin anything I feel is unrealistic or off brief.

Performance/Sportiness

The Network wants something that’s properly quick and looks fast, even standing still. Outright speed and acceleration are of equal importance, as is handling and responsiveness.
I will be judging this stat not just based on the numerical sportiness value, I will also be looking at the car’s actual performance statistics as well.

Drivability

While the stunt driver on set is a very talented driver and capable of handling a lot, The Network doesn’t want a car that’s arduous and rough to drive either.

Prestige

The Network wants a car that’s prestigious and luxurious, and they don’t want something that could potentially take away from the show and The Network’s image.

:star: :star:

Comfort

The Network doesn’t want to stress out the talent and the crew of the show, and having a car that isn’t horrible to ride in goes a long way in ensuring that.

Reliability

The Network pays out good money to well-trusted and well-trained mechanics, but they don’t want a car that’s in and out of the shop, as it could throw off shooting schedules.

Safety

The Network wants to avoid someone getting seriously hurt or even killed on set, so having a safe car in the event of an accident is very important.

:star:

Service Costs

The Network’s execs are aware that supercars aren’t known for being cheap to fix, and have set aside plenty of money to take care of any service costs that might come up.

Value

The Network is putting a lot of money into the show and into buying the car, but if two cars offer the same benefits but one is cheaper, the suits will likely lean towards the cheaper car.

Fuel Economy

The Network isn’t too concerned with fuel economy or fuel costs, but they don’t want something getting single digit MPGs either.

Do note- just because a stat is not listed amongst these priorities, doesn’t mean that you should totally ignore those other stats either. As the field thins out and the competition gets tighter, these stats may be the deciding factor in what car moves forward, and what car gets eliminated.

might take a shot at this one, haven’t made a modern supercar in like… ever

would a widebody be ok? like instead of a exotic if I build a Juke R with a 8" widebody kit.

i mean, no? a Juke R itself is way off brief, putting a widebody on it doesn’t help it

So an all-around supercar, rather than a heavily top speed or track-focused hypercar, is what we’re looking for, then? Anyway, the emissions target is low enough to reach with long headers and normal aspiration.

And I’m open to a joint entry, if I feel like enetering - if anyone’s interested, please let me know.

correct, yes. emissions are also set fairly low because high-revving NA engines, much like what some of the irl cars in the inspirations have, tend to have trouble going much higher than WES 9 in the current version of the game.

All good i just figured where it was a gtr reskin it might be ok, then was going to to do an italdesign style body kit.

All good though, ill make a regular exotic insted

i mean a civic with supercar parts doesn’t stop it from looking like a civic, and judging wise half of this is visual

Touche for soem reason thats where i wanted to go when i first read it idk.
Espace F1 is still a minivan at the end of the day.
modern supercar it is.

Best of luck lads.
I look foward to seeing everyones work from the rear of the pack per usual

Semi-slick tires are road tires, not race tires, and may be used (as far as I am aware).

That should keep the most extreme speed/laptime-focused hypercars outside the scope of this challenge.

That means a convertible variant is off the table, then? If so, then so are coupes made to look like convertibles.

Also, to avoid excessive dependence on aerodynamic grip, should there be overall downforce limits, and if so, how much?

correct, yes. i’m specifically looking for coupes this round.

as for downforce, there are no specific limits, but my suggestion would be to keep it reasonable.

Reasonable downforce? This statement is a bit unclear. Some supercars even have a downforce of more than one ton, so I don’t quite understand what you think is the range of reasonable downforce.

that’s very much the point, but for the sake of argument, let’s use the Senna, something i specifically don’t want as per the brief. it makes roughly 800kg/1800lbs of downforce at 155mph, which is more than i would think is necessary for this brief.

For comparison, my test mule (for a joint entry) only develops 200kg of downforce at the rear (and just 10kg additional downforce at the front) when travelling at the same speed with its active aero deployed, even with the front and rear wing angles maxed out:

That’s a much lower bar - and one that we should be aiming not to exceed by too much.

However, the caveat here is that I achieved this with a total of just four functional aero fixtures (two lips in the front, with the second frontal lip running down the side to simulate a side skirt, plus a rear lip and spoiler), and active wings with cooling flaps. Adding more aero fixtures (such as a second spoiler at either end) would have increased the downforce levels excessively, especially if overdone.

And with regards to prestige, are there any rules regarding hand-made interiors? Last time I checked the ruleset, there were none whatsoever - besides, if it’s not listed in the rules, then it isn’t a rule.

As for the cost cap, I thought it’d been increased by 20% (from $100k AMU to $120k AMU) since the last time I checked the rule set - more quality points for us to sink into where we need them the most, then.

no, no rules against that, and the price cap had always been 120k

Thanks for clarifying.

Also, given that hypercars with extremely high top speeds (>300 mph) are essentially out of the question, shouldn’t we instead be aiming for no higher than a Vmax of 217-255 mph or so? After all, it’s not like Mitchell needs to go much (any?) faster than that, even in the most desperate situations.
