I usually drink once or twice a week, so occasional is a bit too lenient for me…
TNP likes Rum and Ginger Beer
False, as I never drank them, but both seem like ideas worth trying. (doesn’t this sentence sound weird?)
TNP knows why quite suddenly (few recent years, happening right now in fact) BMW and Mercedes switched to “modular everything” approach in designing engines.
If I’m counting correctly BMW uses just 5 engine families, from which 3 are the parts of a bigger modular family - and that’s for their whole lineup, both petrol and diesel. I’m not sure about what Mercedes exactly uses, but they seemingly intend to use only one modular design in forms of petrol and diesel I4 (2.0), I6 (3.0; yes, they are switching back from V6s to I6s, yay for me ), V8 (4.0) and probably V12 (6.0).
Well, Volvo uses only ONE engine family (2.0 turbo R4, petrol and diesel) right now, so they are even more extreme in this trend, but they are a smaller company, don’t make so powerful cars, never really had a tradition of using big engines and are (and I think always were) more about practicality and reasonability than the premium-ness typical for German manufacturers.
For mass production is cheaper, simple
If you’re only making 5 parts instead of 25 you can make those 5 for less. It also makes repairs easier and cheaper because more posts are available, and repairs are certainly something the Germans need to work on lol
TNP has had the pain of a VAG repair
[off-topic]
Yes, of course it is way cheaper, especially combined with using one cylinder displacement for the whole lineup thanks to turbocharging flexibility, but then why didn’t they do this earlier? What is so special about now? Volvo was using modular engines since early 90s, and VAG designs are more or less modular (AFAIK) too since 70s even.
Off topic: They are luxury companies and had the cash to make the best engine in order to make the best car. Now they have actual competition form companies like Genesis making cars 95% as good for a lot less. For the most part rich people have to be smart, that’s how they got to where they are. They still are looking for value so Mercedes and BMW need to adapt to making slightly worse cars for a lot less. Until now there was no pressure to do so and that’s why they started.
