Hello, developers. I want to know if you plan to add rare types of engines like W-engines, WV/WU-engines, VR-engines, U and H engines. Also I want to know about formula’s one boxer.
Also I want to know, will it be possible to create your own engine as mod?
They’ve said he engines already in the game are all they plan to add. A lot of work goes into making a new engine type, and currently there are other parts of the game that need their small team’s attention more.
They’ve entertained adding more engines in the distant future (as in, years from now), but even then, since this game is strictly focused on regular production cars, they’re hesitant to look into rare/unusual concepts. Ferarri’s boxer 8 and 12 is probably the least unlikely of what you suggested, since its the only type entertained on the FAQ.
W and VR engines are in the FAQ, covered by question #4.
I’ve never heard of WV/WU engines - I assume you mean sth like VAG’s “W” engines? If so, the same answer applies as for the VRs. U and H… Well, basically the same story, except I’ve heard of those (but I can’t recall a single car with a U engine). They may not have been explicitly mentioned in the FAQ, but the idea is pretty clear - only the layouts popular enough IRL and easy enough to add into the game are intended to actually appear in it. I guess if not for some old, old promises, we wouldn’t even have V16s by now, since those have always been extremely rare and I’d sooner expect some two cylinders.
speaking of wv/wu engines, this is one of the varieties of w engines, but with a slightly different layout, although I also understand that w engines are also different: three or four cylinders in a row
For what it’s worth, there’s actually a very good reason why the game always places the valves on top and doesn’t have stuff like side valves… It’s because the famous cars with those features generally succeeded in spite of those designs, not because of them. These designs would all be strictly worse than stuff that’s already in the game, you could just switch to some alternate design that’s better in every single way - even in 1946. If they’re going to represent things accurately, then sidevalves are bad gameplay. Why did those famous designs use sidevalves? Because they didn’t know how much worse they were. It’s similar for heads - it turns out that there’s a best design, that we always had it, and that it took us a while to work out how good it really was. Sure, we could make good engines with these sub-optimal designs like sidevalve, but they generally would’ve been better if they used the optimal designs we know and love.
You can say the same for H and U engines too, in cars at least. The one Lotus with an H engine was an unreliable piece of garbage that finished once from 6 starts. It may not be strictly worse than the boxer or V engine, but… There really isn’t a reason to use these configs.
Larger flat engines (not boxers!) might be worth adding, along with W engines - but they’re not quite as useful as Vs, Boxers and Inlines. Which is why they’re low down the priority tree.
Like Hemi heads, L heads for inline engines, and more to do with angles of valve not lay outs. I’m pretty sure they’re not going to make oval valves or valveless haha.
Hemi is just one of the sensible shapes of the combustion chamber. Would you want to choose it for every single engine family? Hemis were discussed numerous times, and I think it always ended with “too little difference for too much work, and too little gameplay value”. Same with valve angles, which IIRC were considered, but got basically combined into the head type choice? I may be mixing stuff up in that regard though.
I can totally see the logic of that, even if I personally would love to fiddle with valve diameters, spark plug placement and piston alloy choice - but I guess the majority of Automation players are not that kind of nerds And Ls are very much outdated tech, the situation of which @AMuteCrypt explained really well IMO.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to shoot down ideas or act like some kind of dev spokesman (WHICH I’M NOT, to be perfectly clear on that), it’s just that I remember discussions about those things from before, and the results of those discussions. I’d like to see some of that too, but I already know the answer
