WMC is a Finnish car factory founded by Klaus Woltter.
Klaus Wollter (1880-1940) was a Finnish-Swedish horse carriage repairer. Among other inventors, he developed the first motorized wagon and through it mass-produced it.
Childhood
Klaus was born into a poor family. At the age of 10, he helped his father repair a horse carriage and always went to town with his father to beg for money. Klaus went to the local school and always got bad numbers from his exams. There was no free time, because it was time for work. At the age of 15, Klaus inherited a horse carriage after his father died of aortic rupture.
When Klaus turned 20, he decided to go to America to look for his livelihood. He met Henry Ford and got a job with the Henry Ford Company, in 1901. When the calendar turned to 1920, he decided to go to Finland. Klaus had enough money to set up his own automobile company and it was renamed WMC (Wollter Motor Company) and the first car came out and it was renamed T32. This 19-horsepower car was able to carry two passengers at 60km/h. There was no demand until car racing began in Sweden. The car won when it won the whole race and soon the cash started to make money. Cars were sold more than what it was in demand.
In 1939, the Winter War began and Klaus decided to volunteer to defend Finland. The factory fell silent for a day when workers heard that Klaus had died from artillery grenades. The factory was closed and reopened in 1955 by the state.
State-owned factory
In 1955, the Finnish government decided to revive the Woltter Motor Company, acquired the factory and manufactured the WMC 600. This car found its way into the world market. One million cars left the factory in 1965. It was also developed as a van and pickup truck. Because of its color, in Finland it was called a frog.
In 1960, when WMC 600-model were sold around the world successfully in the 1960’s about 500,000 cars, WMC celebrated this with the release of the WMC 1000 Special Edition. The customer also received a 2-speed automatic transmission free of charge.
The XC vehicle family
In 1995, the WMC decided to make a new vehicle family: the XC. Each model of this family of vehicles must indicate the volume of the engine and the year of manufacture. For example, XC395, which means (XC (3, engine volume) (95, Year of manufacture) and this model designation is still used in this vehicle family.
