Workers, wages, factories and rivals

I wonder how long a factory could last by never retooling something from 1940… honestly if something like that survives longer than 20 years, then something might be wrong with the buyers. Beyond just being a poorer engine or model in later years (and the repercussions of that), would there be any penalty for not retooling for an extremely long time (such as buyers just not wanting an engine being made with 1940 techniques in 1990 (but wouldn’t mind that 1940 engine if it’d been retooled into a 1990 engine using 1940’s available technology))?

Not sure if I’m asking that properly.

I think this might actually work in countries like India, which still do not have any good car manufacturer. This way I think from 60s to 90s you could still eb able to sell these cars without upgrading, though you wouldnt make a big profit as not a lot of people can and will buy cars, or the cars are this cheap you are barely making any cash on the cars you sell.

I think your biggest problem will be that you cannot compete with other companies because of not enough automation (pun intended). You have to build a huge number of cars today if you want to sell cars at a competitive price.

These treadmill mass production works have been around since the T ford in the 1920s. As long as competitors sell cars that fit other countries standards, with luxury and bigger engines, which cost more money, they cannot sell under a certain price without losing money to it. This leaves a gap for these cheap cars with 800cc engines to be sold in India for example. You dont see VW Golf Mark III/IV/V, Seat Ibiza, Honda Civic (1996 +) etc. etc. sold there at the moment as much as in any other wealthier western country.

Yeah sure, you’re totally right. But just imagine there was a local factory with 80s tech. You would not really stand a chance with 40s tech.

True. I cant deny that. But then the AI or some other multiplayer guy has to be interested in starting/ playing/ selling and focussing on India and other low end markets.
So I really think there is quite some potential if you do this, and there are many regions. AND if the AI doesnt agressively compete with you and tries to go to the same markets you do in the same regions/countries when there is numerous of other opportunities to take

Yeah, without competition the whole “let’s build a good car” becomes a bit pointless. See Trabant (which was not too bad actually).

No, but after the fall of the wall, the complete economic business in the DDR changed, giving people wealth and a possibility to get cash to spend on stuff. Of course coming with it, a complete new market for carmanufacturers opening up, with chances to sell their cars. Though, every region has its own story. The trabant thing wouldnt be there really if the market had been open all the time, or maybe it did? we wouldnt know.

So all I am saying, I think there will be benefits in some region, or maybe some sort of exploit, to use old factory tech and keep selling in a region. This because the region has a certain economical standard that fits keeping at at certains tage instead of investing in a multi million dollar industrial complex.

Considering how cheap labor is in certain places… could you actually influence the economy of a whole nation by paying workers at a rate equivalent of a 1st world country? Of course ignoring if the company can actually afford to do so… it’d be interesting to make the country actually be able to support higher wages all because YOUR company started paying more.

Again, I probably worded all this entirely wrong, like usual!

I think that is a good thing to mention, OCAdam. Just take a look at transport Tycoon Deluxe, where you could make cities grow. I think if you happen to have numerous factories in a country, being the main employer for many, you could probably influence the economy there. Also selling cars could influence the economy of a country, as it provides a good way to transport goods and such in a country. Though, how deep this should go, I don’t know. I would say you could influence economy a little, but of course there are many more factors that do so, but don’t belong in this game.
