Survival of the Fittest 1983 [Finals posted][Complete]

##Welcome the the annual “Survival of the Fittest” shootout 1983
This is a multi-stage competition. Each stage will concentrate on a few key aspects of your car, and each stage, only the winners advance to the next stage, till there’s only 1 car left standing. Your car will have to be fast, tough, safe, economical and comfortable, but not all those aspects weight in as much as the others.

###Technical reglament

Car eligibility : any 1983 or earlier street legal vehicle, built to “Category 5” standards

Steet legal category 5 checklist:

Must include headlights, taillights, blinkers, reverse light (Well at least try to make these cars look good for the blurbs, people)
Safety : 30 or higher
Fuel provided : Ron 91
Catalytic converter : not required
Loudness : under 50
Tires : Semi slicks and off road not allowed, max +5 tire quality
Engine : No positive quality sliders allowed
Emissions : Not a single F given

Total cost max is $10,000

##Economy rule
Your fuel tank in liters equals 5% of your car’s weight in KG. If your car weighs in at 1 ton, your fuel tank is 50 liters. Fuel economy stages are done at a set speed, and are calculated based on automation’s rating for economy at that speed

##Reliability rule
Each point of reliability under 50 is allowed, but penalized by increasing your stage time by 2%. This means you have had some technical trouble along the way, and had to either endure them or stop and fix the problem.
example - your lap time is 1:40, which is 100 seconds. Your reliability is 40, which means 10 under required 50. Your penalty is 10 x 2% = 20%. Meaning your lap time is now 120 seconds exactly, or 2 minutes. After the completion of the stage each point of reliability under 50 is doubled and deducted. If you had a 45 reliability car, and you finish the stage your new reliability will be 35 points (50-45 = 5 points. 5 x 2 = 10. 45 reliability - 10 = 35). If your reliability reaches 0 you are out of the race.

##Offroad / rally stages
Since we don’t really have offroad stages, we will be using tracks that are twisty and tight with the time doubled. If we use nordschelife (which your car does in 10 minutes) as an offroad stage than the gravel nordschleife will take twice as long (10x2 = 20 minutes per lap). Each point of your off-road rating removes 0.5% of your final time. If you do 10 minutes exactly on the Green hell and your offroad rating is 10, then your offroad time will be 10min x 2 = 20 min. 10 rating = 5% decrease of stage time (which is 1 minute exactly). Final result is 19 minutes. For these stages each point of “Offroad” stat will remove 0.5% of damage dealt to your car set for the stage, to a total of completely negating the damage received.

##Damage
Each stage takes a toll on your car (stated for each stage separately), damaging it, including penalties to reliability, speed and driveability.
example - your car enters a 5% stage with 50 reliability, and 50 drivability. In the next stage both these stats will drop by 5%, meaning 47.5 for each. As soon as your car’s reliability drops under 50, you will receive 2% time penalty for each point of reliability under 50 as per reliability rule. All mentioned reliability is cars’ Average reliability stat, not Engine reliability

##Battle stages
8 cars stage for 1vs1 racing.
The qualification for battle stages is posting the best lap. After the qualifications the grid takes following setup

1st vs 8th
2nd vs 7th
3rd vs 6th
4th vs 5th

At which point 1 vs 1 battles commence

Battles
If the two cars are separated by less than a second per lap, then the battle commences. In battle 1vs1 drivablity stat acts as a multiplier between them, each 1 point of driveability takes off exactly 0.5% off your lap time (Cars are using each others’ slip stream and becoming faster both)

##Rain and night stages
When racing in harsh weather conditions or at night or both, it’s important to concentrate on the road, not on reigning in your car at every second. For a stage with bad weather conditions or night each point of your drivability will result in 0.5% decrease of your stage time. If both rain and night are present on the track at the same time then each point of drivability will result in 01% decrease of stage time.

##Tire suitability of tires at stages
Unsuitable tires will increase your time by a set amount of percent
Asphalt : Sports compound - no penalty / Medium compound - 5% / Hard compound - 10%
Asphalt + Gravel : Sports compound - 5% / Medium compound - no penalty / Hard compound - 5%
Gravel : Sports compound - 10% / Medium compound - 5% / Hard compound - no penalty

##Entries are now accepted. Deadline is in 10 days, 21/5/2016

###Mods allowed - steam workshop

###Naming guideline
This is to be followed exactly, or the car will not be accepted
Model name - “SOF - Your forum name”
Trim name - anything
Engine Family - “SOF - Your forum name”
Engine version - anything

So yeah. Weirdly we all passed stage 1 this time, next up - Time attack at Sachsenring in the wet.

So, now going gets tough, and unlike 75, i am not going to post all the maths here, so you guys would have to guess if the car is fast because of it’s drivability or just is fast and how that could factor in the next races, im not even posting tire compounds just yet.

Anyways, we arrive at Sachsenring, to be greeted by a torrential downpour of epic proportions. The cars are given a look over, and one by one they’re off on their 1 lap standing start time attack. Only 16 cars will move on to the next round, so we are saying goodbye to

Well here we are, Lydden hill… and the weather is wonderfully terrble. The rain is in full effect making the track into a mess of wet tarmac and clay baths, all of this added by the fact that the time is late and we’re doing this at night time, with no track lighting whatsoever. Our competitors line up in pairs and wait for their runs!

##Battle 1

Strop vs Nomade 0013
The race was a one way battle with Strop taking the win by 11.13 seconds. No matter how much effort Nomade put to it, it was all rendered useless by the green machine that was the “Conqueror”

##Battle 2

Howler automotive vs DeusExMackia
As the cars set off you could see Howler’s Prodigy struggling on the wrong wheel compound, which allowed the plucky garage special to keep up, more so, the final run to the finish line on tarmac allowed Deus more grip and a clever use of slipstream out of the last corner sealed the victory by 1.6 seconds

##Battle 3
Airjordan vs Madrias
This was not a very surprising battle, Madrias’ Storm sentinel proved a fast car, but the Smooth racing Bananator was just in it’s element, taking the victory by 5.34 seconds

##Battle 4
Phale vs QuantoSolo
The cleverly named “SOF v6” of Phale has proved to be the fastest car on the grid today, leaving no chance to Siberia DTRT, winning the round by 3.18 seconds

##Battle 5
Der Bayer vs Matti
This shaped up to be a very one sided battle, with Matti’s Shack endurado riding on the wrong compound tires for the track conditions, and Der Bayer’s hammercat being the sure bet, but as the cars approached the first corner we could see the Hemmercat being way out of shape, having Der Bayer battle it for control as Matti’s plucky Endurado stayed planted and marched on, allowing Matti to use strategy in this short race. On approach to second to last corner Matti used slipstream to get past Der Bayer, pushing him very wide throught he corner and maintained that lead to the finish line, beating the Hammercat by 1.61 seconds

##Battle 6
TR8R vs Stensen
Both guys being veterans of SOF challenges took to the track, as we could see a battle of Stensen’s new engineering idea versus TR8R’s Cruzer XJ, which was an evolution of his 1975 entry. With both cars running without technical difficulties, the Cruzer did prove that evolution is better than revolution, beating the monstrous T5 720SR by 6.13 seconds

##Battle 7
Darkshine5 vs Marcus817
The mid-pack of the last challenge has proven to be a close competition, and we all expected a close race from the last 2 battles, but this proved to not be the case, as Marcus’ XLS built up a lead on Darkshine’s firestarter and kept it for the whole race, winning by 6.03 seconds

##Battle 8
Suprec vs Koolkei
In the battle of the monstrous “Izen Lev” versus the very plucky Croko by Koolkei we hoped for a real David v Goliath battle and we almost got it, if only Croko could be a tad faster Koolkei could have a shot at the win by using slipstream or tactics, but sadly, the gap was just too much, as Suprec’s car crossed the line 1.87 seconds in the lead

##So our winners for today :

Strop (You can hear a faint grinding noise as he turns now)
(Purrs like a kitten, falling down the stairs while wearing chains)

DeusExMackia
(You want to run against Razor, you go through his crew first!)

Airjordan
(Banana smoothies)

Phale
(holes are lighter than carbon fiber)

Matti
(15 miles to the Love Shack)

TR8R
(Not original, better…)

Marcus (You notice a bit of oil pooling up under the car)
(The only person not happy to strike oil)

Suprec (You discover a weird knocking sound the speed of which changes with engine RPM)
(I got a baaaaaaad feeling about this)

We’ve arrived to the Mid Ohio raceway, where a full on race awaits us. The weather is pretty great, with sun shining and warming the tarmac right up. The rules are simple - 8 cars enter this stage with only 4 continuing their run to the next stage.

The good weather allowed for the widowmaker handling cars to run quite fast and consistent today, with the slower competition seemingly facing certain defeat, but as it turns out it was not the case. Right off the bat the race separated into 2 clusters, one in the lead with Phale, Strop, Airjordan, Suprec and TR8R, and the second quite a ways off, consisting of Markus, DeusExMackia and Matti. With the front pack stretching out and going further and further in the lead, the second group has begun to use team tactics, slipstreaming each other, reaching speeds their cars could not achieve individually. The front of the pack has been too busy keeping the status quo between them, only a few seconds apart, while the slipstreaming group quite easily caught up. At about a couple of corners from finish DeusExMackia, Matti and Markus caught up to the leading group and using most of the same tactics and some aggressive maneuvering pushed the leading group aside and took the lead, running off into the distance, constantly swapping positions, using both slipstream and bump drafting, leaving no chance for the others to catch up. This has provoked some serious in-fighting for the 4th position, the only spot left eligible to advance to the next stage. And the results were as follows

#8 - TR8R (Well, even pikachu needs to be evolved 3 times)
#7 - Suprec (Driving a tank is good… as long as you’re on a tank polygon)
#6 - Strop (the car pulled violently to the left and the grinding noise got louder, which limited Conqueror’s speed and made it impossible to catch any of the competition’s slipstream, being just that tiny bit slower. After race analysis has shown serious damage to the front left CV axle)
#5 Airjordan (It’s painted “minion” colour, it could never succeed)

#And the ones going to semi final are

#4 Phale (There seems to be a stonger force needed to select gears now)
(Cool guys don’t look at explosions. That’s why I mounted the engine behind me)
#3 Markus817 (The leak has been identified as a main bearing issue, spitting oil into the clutch and onto the ground)
(It’s not like supercars of the 80’s were a fire hazard, I’m sure you’re fine)
#2 DeusExMackia (You have discovered a weird knocking sound from the rear of the car, which is evident on acceleration and cornering)
(WE NEED MORE DUCTTAPE)
#1 Matti (The interior ligting, along with all the dials is playing tricks on you)
(We started from nothing, now we have technical difficulties)

Well, here we are, semi finals, with 4 of our total badasses duking it out mano a mano on a tight and twisty offroad stage, battling for the chance to prove themselves in the finals.

A short qualifying run has snown that the pairs are to be as followed

###Battle 1
Matti vs Marcus 817

Matti’s “Shark” has been a pretty trouble-less car so far, and it was riding on proper gravel rally tires, giving him a massive advantage, with Marcus being not only disadvantaged by his tires, but also by the fact that the engine chugged oil like crazy and the rear main seal has failed completely, allowing the clutch to slip and burn, not putting the power to the wheels and killing itself in the process. No matter how well the XLS-1 has proven itself so far, it was a wounded animal that was dying and fast. Matti has crossed the line 5 minutes and 35 seconds earlier, but it did not matter. As Marcus crossed the line we could all smell ceramic smoking as well as huge puddle of oil under his car. It finished the stage at the cost of it’s life, and had to be pushed to the makeshift pit area.

Matti advances to the finals (the ldashboard has given up the ghost, and does not work now. The engine has started misfiring at some random points, which makes it near impossible to pinpoint the problem)
(ES MUY ESPERADO!)

###Battle 2
Deus Ex Mackia vs Phale

DeusExMackia’s team has performed miracles to get a garage tuned Belrose to the semi finals, and hoped to reach further, but the plucky little sedan was facing the force of nature that is Phales’ SOF V6 special. Despite the Belrose being easy to handle, the SOF was quite on par with that in it’s handling capabilities, proving a deadly racing weapon throughout the twisty rally stage, beating DeusExMackia’s car by 1 minute and 19 seconds.

Phale advances to the finals (Grinding noise is now heard every time you change gear, it’s not really preventing you from gear changes, but it takes a bit of extra effort to do so)
(When in doubt, put engine overboard)

The final battle between Phale and Matti was at hand, and we were at the Pikes peak hillclimb course. The course was dry and nice, and the night was warm, so the cars were given a final inspection and let loose on the track. Matti took to the track first, and despite the slight show of wear and tear took a brisk pace up the hill. The tires were not ideal for the conditions, and the car was not as fast as it could have been, but there was still quite a bit of drivability left, so Matti did not have a lot of trouble with his run.

Phale’s contraption with an outboard motor was next up and unlike Phale it was running tires perfectly suited to this, and there was quite a bit of speed left in the car, sadly the thing has started to show signs of losing composure as Phale had to wrestle the car up the hill, where Matti had easy time taming the Shack. Eventually the run was complete and the result was

###Ladies and gentlemen. The winner of 1983 Survival of the Fittest challenge, by a margin of 1 minute and 3 seconds is…

#Phale.
(I won the SOF83 and all I got was a snarky comment about my car)

And his priceless trophy is

A cookie.

Thanks for playing, and see you on the next Survival of the Fittest.

Well this time FOA have a proper technical accountant…and we CANNOT settle for another humiliating failure!!!

Woo! Can’t wait for this. And this time, Erin’s engineer’s won’t be allowed to enter a car that will ‘probably’ be efficient enough…

Good.

Is total cost the estimated price? I would recommend doing this as the total cost in the overview tab currently doesn’t include the cost of the engine.

This is a really good competition idea. DMV may not build the most exclusive machines, but building stuff that can do it all is our specialty.

Woohooo time to defend the trophy
Really high total cost I see.

I think it makes more sense if you switch %. Like if there is rain and night the driveability is even more important than just if there is one.

cant wait to submit

i learned from my mistake, i won’t use the communitasia for a base again

suggestion !
we need a bad luck person
someone who will break down for no reason

I’ll have to devise a way to not put all my eggs in one basket this time. The highly offroad-tuned car I made last time did great until it met its match on the one paved track. Still, I find it lightly amusing that it was the most fuel efficient, despite being V8 and Turbocharged.

This time… Not sure what I plan to do.

If that’s the case, thank you for volunteering.

Fixed

No. That would be boning somebody who built their car properly. There will be enough DQ’s on the first eco run, Im sure and each stage will get people left behind as it happened in 75.

I think for this time round I will enter something that should make it through a few rounds, maybe a family wagon with a bit of a kick

Solved by disallowing the quality sliders in the engine bay. Any engine goes, you won’t be able to run a super huge 1000+ hp behemoth anyways

So it’s still the total cost in overview tab? Limiting quality sliders is fine but it still doesn’t penalize choosing better parts.

It won’t. And I would not really care if people build their engines free of limitations. I don’t think you’ve participated in 75 challenge, you’ll find enough limitations to work around on the car.

Also first stages announced.

I will try to rustle up the mojo to enter this time! Looks like fun.
