2007 chevy malibu base model (first car)

well since i talked about it a bit in true or false and talked to @ramthecowy about it a bit, i think it’s time to start this thread up. So sme of you who have been here a while might wonder “wait, weren’t you getting a trailblazer?” The answer is yes, that was the original plan, however, my stepfather decided to keep it and have it soldier on to 300K miles. Considering it’s mechanical condition is better than just about every other trailblazer out there with this mileage, we’ll let him achieve this goal. Back on topic of the Malibu though, so, my mother got herself a new car (2013 CRV) and as a result i got her old one, which is the malibu. History of it is that it was purchased brand new back in 2007 as a gift to my grandmother, who just had her old car, a chevy corsica, die on her. my grandmother had it for only a year, then my uncle, who at the time had a Ford bronco, had his car quit on him. my grandmother and my uncle pooled together some cash to buy my grandma another new car, a 7th gen malibu (i forgot exactly which year) and my uncle got her old Malibu. however, since my mother was still the registered owner at the time since it was a gift to my grandmother, she had to approve it, which she did, only if my uncle promised to continue making the payments. he didn’t. with 2 payments left he stopped paying it off, so my mother as the registered owner took it back, and made the final 2 payments, which totaled out to be $660. after that, the car was paid off and officially ours. it did receive just a tad bit more abuse in our care (my stepbrother drove it into a snow bank leaving a dent in the front bumper) though it was relatively minor. after about 2 years i got my learners permit and i was driving it off and on, i mostly drove it just to pick my step brother up from work, which was still a good 10 mile drive, and doing it several times. My Mother also have me do 55 down a bumpy back road in it.

as for my issues to deal with on it, my mother hit a pothole doing 40 causing some front suspension damage, however it was minimal enough to let it still be drivable, and we drove it that way for 3 months. now it’s an issue i gotta deal with. i also do not currently know how much life is left on the tires (keep forgetting to check) but if a change is required, then it’s gonna be out of service 6 months for me to get enough cash, as i would prefer not to have cheap ebay junk that’s been in a warehouse since 2004. so lets pray the tires still have months left of tread on them. anyway, enough blabbering, time to show what photo’s i have of my car (more tomorrow)

there she is, a photo of her during the summer proudly taking a spot in the driveway. sure a bit battered, with the missing door handle observable, though that’s fixable, right?

and now a photo of it next to something a bit… larger

yeah, it’s not the largest thing out there by any means, but least it runs. as i told ram, it’s not economical at all, EPA estimates are 28 MPG combined, though the car’s computer says it’s closer to about 24 MPG combined. the acceleration isn’t the best being only 144 HP and a 4 speed automatic in a 3,000 pound car, with probably a whole lot of my mom’s junk still in the trunk. so. what do i do with it now? well, it’s technically four days until i’m eligible to get a junior license and drive it on my own, problem with that is, i’ve been lazy and haven’t gotten a job yet. so i couldn’t afford gas, much less register it and give it an oil change it’s due for, it also has the check engine light on for currently unknown reasons. and another issue with is is when my mother was designated driver of a bunch of drunks. that’s a night forever stained into the car’s history

so where is it now? hiding behind a boat. literally. yeah, as i can currently afford nothing for it, and it cannot be driven, it will just have to sit here until i can give it the love it deserves.

so that’s really it for the story, i’ll just leave off with some Photo’s (and i’ll get more tomorrow)

some of the rust

the odometer as it sits

and finally, as straight of a front angle as i could get

same as above but with HDR (not uploaded here because a bit too large at 2.5 megabyte)
if i remember, I’ll get more pictures after school tomorrow as it is currently dark out, and if i missed anything, i’ll add it in later.

I once drove my brother around while he was drunk and he threw up in my car. In that scenario, you make them pay to have it detailed.

Lol, hope the stains weren’t as permanent as the ones I have

Thankfully not, the place I went to does good work.

Yeah, my mother’s cheap and just cleaned it herself. The car still smelled of puke for a good week after

Not a bad looking car, but I wouldn’t personally own a GM product from that era. If I were you I’d sell it and get something a bit more trustworthy.

Those gen2 ecotec engines were pretty stout motors and that 4 speed while not great was overbuilt for 4 cylinder use, as the same internals rated for use on v6 engines. It’s not a bad first car by any means, plenty of room for activities at least. I’m a little concerned by that “front suspension” damage you talked about, have you had it looked at, is it just an alignment issue or were things actually bent? Good luck moving forward, and hey if the tires are overly worn you’ll have all winter to get the inside cleaned and detailed for the spring :).

Yep, 2007 was the first year the 6th gen Malibu had the 2nd gen ecotec, and the fact the 4 speed was meant for a V6 is still pretty reassuring.

For suspension damage, I’m pretty sure some things are bent, and it will need an alignment also, luckily for me though, I’m in an automotive technology class so nothing I can’t do myself

As for cleaning out the interior, it has to happen anyways as a bunch of my mother’s stuff is still in there.

Do they still teach how to do front end alignments without the laser system?

I do think the old alignment machine they have isn’t a laser system, though we haven’t gotten into that unit yet so idk yet, I can confirm they don’t teach about carburetors anymore tho

That’s stupid. Having recently learned about how they work I have to say it’s a really cool topic. Even cooler to be able to tune carbs on your own.

It’s cool, but not very practical, the newest car with a factory carb was built over 25 years ago. Carb tuning and building is a small specialist market for professionals and is better suited to being learned by hobbyists or custom shops rather then a general automotive tech.

agreed, There is a college course we can take after the program called “Edelbrock performance Academy” where they do teach the carb stuff plus tuning it and all that, but that’s it really.

as promised, i got more photo’s.

a view of the front, showing off the damage on the driver side rear door (that i forgot to mention like a derp :stuck_out_tongue: )

a straight view of the back.

and an angled view of the back from near-ground level.

btw the iphone does pump out higher resolutions, it just makes the file size just a tad bit too big. also if anyone would like to know some future plans for it, i’ll post about it in a bit, maybe

The last vehicle sold in the US to use a carburetor was the 1994 Isuzu Pickup. I can’t find a specific model but certain Ladas used them until 2006. In my classes we talked about them but we didn’t have any hands on experience for the same reason. At my job we only have three vehicles that use carburetors anyway. A 1969 Ford Tractor, a 1980 Dodge PeaceKeeper, and a 1989 Dodge Diplomat. None of those see everyday use. Apart from that you’ll only find them in small engines like lawn equipment or motorcycles.

Also when I got my car detailed they had to use a chlorine bomb in order to get the puke smell out.

Ahh you’re right, I thought carbs died in 1990 with the Oldsmobile 307.

1991 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (351)
1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (AMC 360)
1993 Mazda B2200
and the 1994 Isuzu were the last sold in the US.
