2015 Light Sports Car Challenge [results incoming]

Two questions:

  • one of the inspiration pics has what looks like a Vuhl 05 if I’m not mistaken, would it be allowed to remove the windshield?
  • can advanced trim settings be used to just hide the chassis?

1 - Yes is the answer. Funny that it looks indeed so much like that car, I just used a generative ai website to make them up
2 - Yes, I’m ok with people using advanced setting to fix things like that. As long as you keep out of any setting that actually has an influence on the beamNg export like changing footsprint, wheels, suspensions, etc

I added a section to the OP with the already registered participants and also people I know are actively working on submitting. If you’re one of those, please let me know so I can add you to the list. This will make my administration of the challenge a bit easier.

Also a submission can be a team effort.

Do all wings have to be visible, or just the two main ones?

just the main ones

And we’re already over 10 serious participants committed to join in this challenge.

The deadline is still over 2 weeks away, so plenty of room for many more. This pretty much guarantees that a pre-selection round will take place as described previously.

I would like to clarify a bit about the motivation for this challenge, since that will influence a lot how the submitted cars will score.

The lighting bulb moment that originated this challenge is
What about making a car in automation that would translate to great multiplayer racing in BeamMP. My own Assetto Corsa experience is that the MX-5 is an awesome online multiplayer racecar there and so the challenge is to try to replicate the same type of racing experience in beamNg”.

As you can see from the above, it’s not about making the fastest hotlap speedster, but you need to consider also the following:

  • Can different levels of driver race the car; is the learning curve too steep for beginners or is it a boring car for advanced drivers?
  • Is it a forgiving car or does it kill you at the first mistake?
  • Is it easy to drive outside the racing line? (so overtaking can happen)
  • Does it allow for different racing styles?
  • What level of consistency can you achieve with this car? (focus is on full race pace and not on individual hot lap)
  • Can it handle curbs without murder attempts?
  • Can it last a race without burning the brakes?
  • Is it enjoyable to drive? (feels nice, looks nice, sounds nice, feels fast, etc)
  • Is it competitive?

Just a reminder that there´s just about under 2 weeks to go.
Some pretty cool cars already got submitted and I´m looking forward to many more. keep them coming

I don’t know what anyone else is doing or what i’m missing, but this turns out to be impossible for me to make an MX-5 style body and get anywhere close to 150HP, let alone 200…

A 2.0L inline 4 should be able to do this easily. A 1.6-1.8L possibly, especially with some aggressive tuning.

Literally made this immediately after my last post.

What’s actually stopping you? you can even easily fit a 2.5 to 3L v10 within regulation on the Mx5 body. Reaching 200hp should be very easy with any engine choice. 2K engine material costs is a very generous limit.

Ah, I should have been more specific - it’s mostly the cost and weight of the car itself that’s the issue. I end up having to downsize the engine to scrape in the 1100kg limit.

Unless I’m misinterpreting the rules?

It’s mostly the 0 techpool that makes it hard

Car cost should not be an issue. Unless you forgot to limit the top gear at 200, which makes your tires be much more expensive than necessary. Sure, you may not have enough budget for a top notch diff but everything else should not be a problem.
If you’re having weight issues my first thoughts are: Is the wheelbase too long? and: are you sure you’re using the correct chassis/panel combination? also: you don’t need more than 2 seats

Also a reminder that at this Discord, you can find online people(myself included) who are willing to help you and spar with you for ideas and techniques for creating the .car. Including some also participating on this very challenge. Just look for the channel with this challenge’s name under user competitions.

Turns out that it was mostly the body I was using - I tried another one and despite being the same wheelbase, I am now having to try to add weight to get it up to the minimum!

But just to confirm - this is what is meant by 0 techpool?

Because if so, I’m still struggling to get it down close to the required material costs without it being terrible.

yes it is

Hey, just to make sure, the downforce limit is the sum of the number in the perfomance tab, and not the graph, right?
