OFFICIAL STATEMENT

After sleeping on it, here are my thoughts on the recent situation.

NOMINEE POLICY & ROBORACE 2060

We’re not fighting over a government research grant here, so trying to stir accusations of bias or patronage is neither proper nor logical. And we’re not auditioning people’s lifelong records in the community, either, so stacking up to “let someone have it” based on a throwaway (if hypocritical) comment is also unproductive. If nothing else, it’s too much attention to devote a person.

To make things clear: I do not intend on retroactively removing RoboRace 2060 from the pool of Challenge of the Year options. Having “being finished” as a prerequisite was not present due to both Cestalis 1000km and Mille Monti, both of which have not yet concluded but are nevertheless hosted by players with a good track record and every intention of finishing. Therefore, while I was not expecting RoboRace 2060 to be nominated, said nomination was legal, and I don’t ever intend to arbitrarily disqualify nominees based on the circumstances surrounding them or the players behind them.

However, having more hard prerequisites for nominees going forward is a valid suggestion, and if I continue to host next year, I may also return to reassigning nominees based on category suitability like I did last year.

It was up to all of you to nominate finished challenges for the voting, and I also hope you did, at least the ones that are complaining. If you don’t like some actual nominations (be it that the challenges are unfinished or some other reason), just vote for something else.

Lastly, as RoboRace 2060 faces strong competition from other ChOTY nominees, it follows that participants’ votes should make this a non-issue, so, frankly, I found many of these reactions to be not only overblown, but also unjustified, as neither Faye nor Madrias voiced their concerns earlier or submitted nominations of their own.

CATEGORY REQUIREMENTS

This is a large enough community that not everybody knows everybody, and especially since there’s entire parts of the community that don’t interact with other parts. As such, one can’t, and shouldn’t, expect everyone to be able to vote in every category.

Speaking of votes, poll requirements have been relaxed but not entirely done away with; any category without a reference picture or a link is now voluntary, though only on the grounds that I can’t possibly expect those out of the loop to comb through several posts of a specific brand or from a specific player. That said…

As I said before, don’t rush. If you’re signed in, Google Forms can save your progress, so you may not even need to do it all in one go.

unjustified, as neither Faye nor Madrias voiced their concerns earlier or submitted nominations of their own.

Maybe that’s because every category required a submitted nomination, regardless of whether or not we knew something in that category. Makes it difficult to actually fill out a form when you barely know anything going on with other people’s cars, doesn’t it?

If I could have just submitted a challenge and called it done, it would’ve been Knugcab’s 24 Hours of Clunkers, because that is the sort of event I enjoy, not “what’s the best way to minmax my stats while tryharding on the body with 1800 fixtures and 20GB of custom images.”

Here’s the thing: I know my designs are shit, and they’re not improving. Why would I enter challenges knowing I’m going right into the bin as a waste of the host’s time?

Perhaps if you’re going to go on the attack, do so after making it easier for community “outsiders” to participate in the nominations.

No one’s forcing you to participate, and if you don’t know most of what’s going on and what cars were being built you could, I dunno, research? Not the host’s problem that the “outsiders” were too lazy to even look around. You had a whole week to do so during the nomination period.

While I can understand your frustration, I’m not sure what does anything you talked about prevented you from doing what Stig said: voicing out the issues beforehand.

I’ll admit I have not participated the nominating process or have any plans to vote too due to my lack of knowledge of what the fuck has been going on this year. But if I were in your place finding out I’m required to fill out parts that I have absolutely no clue about, I would have brought it up here and ask for revisions.
Pointing out the flaws only after the fact seems kinda unproductive to me, especially for EOTY which in my honest opinion doesn’t hold any weight.

If you ask me, this whole EOTY is not a mandatory voting for people on the forums, so if you’re gonna participate, I believe voters do have the nominal obligation to seek out what they want to vote on, even though I fully agree your earlier point of making that process more accessible by whatever means possible. I don’t see Stig, the host of EOTY, has the responsibility to handle that part, but rather the people who wanted to be voted on, as much as that may resemble self-wanking.

But yeah Steak put it quite well albeit a bit blunt, if we don’t know much about what the community has done for the past year, maybe we should just sit this one out and drool at the results.

Well, I think this is a problem being blown up way too far, but out of all the criticism I must say that I absolutely get the one about the obligatory votes. I can see the point behind them as a host, because it will be harder to put the next part up if 20 people voted on this but only 3 on this. On the other hand, if it actually puts people off when it comes to voting at all, maybe the difference in the least popular categories won’t be that large anyway?

I am not saying “this round sucks”, I am not saying that it should be changed now. I am not even saying that it should be changed next year, but at least I feel that it is valid criticism worth looking into how it should be handled, especially since it seems to be coming from multiple people.

If I have the right to give a blank vote when it comes to who should rule the country for the next upcoming years, maybe such a thing does not need to be taken more seriously when it comes to “who built the best red right hand drive 1987 hatchback with alloy wheels this year in a computergame”? I don’t know, but as I said, maybe worth looking into.

I do wanna point out that in the nominations, it has been possible to abstain by writing something like “N/A” or “Not nominating” in a category, and in the first round by selecting all options in a category (so they cancel out).

I do agree with you that that’s not super obvious tho, and that putting the word “required” on the category isn’t quite sending the right message for something that should be very low stakes and lighthearted.

(Btw, imo if only 3 people care enough about a given category to cast a vote, those should be the only ones deciding that category. It’s not fair to them to have their opinions overpowered by a crowd of people who don’t have one.)
