Adapt or die [Final scores posted]

Warning this is intended to be a difficult challenge with multiple cars being submitted with the average fuel economy being calculated.
It is also a community mod pack friendly challenge.

The year is 2020 and extreme environmental legislation has been passed by essentially all countries.
Their intention is to drive out the sports cars, luxury cars and utility cars out of the general market. Of course these cars are also your most profitable, responsible for most if not all of your profit margin.

So do you give up your profitable lines and build only economy cars or can you adapt.

The fuel efficiency average of all of your cars sold must average 45mpg US or better.
The emissions must be 50 or lower, in addition a tax of $10 per each emissions per year.

Fuel cost (thanks to new energy taxes)
Regular Unleaded $5.00
Premium $5.50
Super $6.00
Ultimate (now available at the pump) $6.50

The safety of all your cars must be at least 50.
0-100kph must be less than 12 seconds
Top speed greater than 130kph/80mph
Loudness less than 60
No front wings
No semi slick tires

The scoring calculation will be the following equation with tweaks for each of the classes

100*(√dr+√sprt+√com+√pres+√safe+√prac+√util+√off)/
(fuel cost12000/mpg+emissions10+(total cost/(rel/5))+service)

The average fuel economy will be calculated as follows using the fuel economy from the various cars submitted

(2economy+4family+1.5sport+2utility+1.5*luxury)/11

due to the complexity of the competition I will accept submissions until the end of June, or when I get 24 submissions.

There will be highlights of each class, and I will try to do a writeup of the company with the highest score (as per the score calculator) as well as the one with the highest average fuel economy (as long as they submitted all 5 classes).

I have also thrown together a set of benchmark cars that will not be counted.

It took me a few minutes to understand this. I’d suggest putting more formatting into the classes so they are clearly visible. Maybe alternate colors for each class, or put a space between them at the very least.

It’s pretty much the same scoring system that VicVictory is using with a few tweaks.

Question: The way I read it, we can put in more than one category, but the fuel economy will be averaged. If we put in more than just an economy car, are we REQUIRED to put in ALL categories?

You can put in as many or as few as you want, but to win you need to submit all. You can have one car entered into multiple classes, and even different trims in different classes.

So if one car gets 15mpg another can get 75mpg and it’s balanced? This may be doable, but I’ll need to learn how to get that economy car over 100mpg if RAI will have a chance at effectively completing this challenge ever.

The fuel economy of my benchmark cars is
Economy 60.7 (2 cars sold)
Family 53.4 (4 cars sold)
Sport 35.5 (1.5 cars sold)
Utility 33.3 (2 cars sold)
Luxury 31.1 (1.5 cars sold)

With the weighted average I get 45.59mpg

Aha! I’m not bad at these fuel economy + emissions challenges. If I have time I’ll definitely enter.

(Everyone else seems to find them incredibly dull. )

I guess reliability is meant with “rel” in your equation, right? So it should lower the yearly costs, but in your equation higher reliability means higher costs.
In addition to that: does total cost only go into yearly cost or have I missed that buyers do have a fixed budget?
And the last one: In the scoring equation you are missing a closing brace. Where should it be?

He may have typed it incorrectly in the thread, but I verified on my spreadsheet (which is what he based it on, and I originally based it on his original) the concept works properly: increasing reliability decreases annual cost.

So to again prove that I have no idea what I am doing I am now submitting my 5 models, fingers crossed!!

rel=average reliability, fixed I think I’ll double check when I get home.

Total cost gets converted to a yearly cost via reliability.

Closing brace goes at the end, I also added a pair to fix the other problem you caught.

In my spread sheet its broken up into groups instead of one long equation.

So, Initial cost of the vehicle is not a part of the weighting? only the Cost per year?

Total cost is the numerator in part of the annual cost figure. And the annual cost figure is weighted differently for various classes.

Hence: more important for economy cars, less important for luxury cars.

The initial cost is broken down to cost per year.

Using the average reliability/5 gives me an estimate of the lifespan of the car. I divide the initial cost by this value to give me a cost per year.

Then we add in the service cost, fuel cost, and in this case a pollution tax.

Edit: found another typo in the posted equation and fixed it.

When I get home I will check the equations in both the spreadsheet and on the posting to make sure everything is correct and agrees.

BTW, I know you didnt list low quality fuel but one of my entries is running it so I thought why not try, even if you score it as Regular I would be fine with that. With this car you can travel anywhere and be sure that it will run on just about anything flammable, plus it would get you there quickly :smiley:

I am having a little difficulty with the practicality part for the family car, I can get up to 49.1 but I seem to be missing what effects it. Any pointers?

Passenger space and seat cout are the main factors.
