Aftermarket Customization

Would it be possible to add a slider for the over ease of modifying the cars you make, so you could either set it to be so that any random joe with a screwdriver and a beer could muck about with the car or if you open the hood you violate the warranty?

(exaggerated for effect  )

I dont see why this should be in the game… doesn’t add the slightest bit to the gameplay, in my opinion.

Yeah, I can’t see that this would be all that useful in gameplay.

Plus usually it’s not so much that cars are made to be easily modified, more that their design makes it easy for other reasons. For example it’s easy to get big power out of a Corvette, because it uses a known engine design that the aftermarket has had over a decade to play with in various forms.

People like to make cars their own, so an easy to customize car could (in some cases) mean happier customers and/or more sales

Yes, but that adds no point to the gameplay. 1) You would just set the slider to full customization, and get more sales. 2) It is not something that automakers worry about when designing a car.

I think there is historical relevance to this idea.
In Australia at least.
There have been a number of cars that have become hugely successful here purely on the basis of how easily they could be modified. They Hyundai Excell being the obvious example but there are others.

If it really adds anything to the gameplay or how it could be implemented are two things I really don’t have the time to think about or comment on right now though. Possibly tonight if I remember.

We’re these cars bought from new and modified by their original owners?
In the UK most modified cars are several owners down the line from new.
I can’t believe that any auto maker would set out, on purpose, to design an easily aftermarket modifiable car, certainly I have never seen one advertised such.
The closest I can think of would be in developing nations where reliability ease and low cost of maintenance would be an advantage.

i think you are looking at the problem the wrong way. a easily tuned car is one that is under developed by a car company, if you undertune your engine you would have a very large aftermarket of tuning options. So there’s no reason in this game that you should be looking for that, if you really wanted to get into that, build several versions of the same engine and pretend that people can swap parts between them.

Yes. It was also very common with Imprezas not too long ago and they’re doing it with GT86/BRZs now. People have also been doing it with Commodores and Falcons for as long as they’ve been on the market.

I reckon the ease of modding also depends on what the original intent of the maker was.
The 1.4 engine in my little Punto produces 77 hp
However the same core engine can produce 177hp when fiat add a turbo and a 16 valve multiair head. Just how easy it is to do after market I have no idea but it is possible
The 177hp version can be further modded with ecu remaps, intake and intercooler kits and have been reported to produce in excess of 200 hp, but obviously at the cost of efficiency.
