Cool Wall 5: High Proof [DONE]

Round 4: Environmental Resistance

Sam's mindset about anti-corrosion soundness was pretty simple: if the car is old, it's vital because it might be a dead dog otherwise. If the car isn't old, being a rust bucket might *still* end its life early. Sam doesn't believe that it's normal to have your possessions just wither away, leaving you all the poorer.

MOST RUST-PROOF: 1983 Tarske C22 - @Danicoptero (61.96)

With a specially rust-proofed and sealed chassis clad in aluminum, there’s really nothing on the compact yet pricey sportscar from Tarske that even could rust. The car might as well have been made a century ago and it’d still need nothing more than some new bushings. Assuming the engine and such worked, Sam figures she could buy this car blind if it came to it, without fear of structural deficiencies.

MOST RUST-PRONE: 1972 Joliette Duchesse - @thecarlover (23.83)

And then there’s this French GT - which is a decade older, and made quite unapologetically out of steel on bare steel. The chassis is practically unprotected against damage, and though the Duchesse in the listing looks intact enough, Samantha doesn’t feel very confident about its integrity and completeness. It’s no surprise, though; according to those in the know, the French beat up on their cars so much that it’s uncommon for them to survive long enough to rust out.

Interesting Facts

  • Second from last is the Edgewater Daytona - one of the fiberglass cars, as mentioned last round. Seems that the body’s literal inability to rust isn’t the be-all and end-all when the chassis is entirely bare steel.
  • The average resistance is 39.60, exactly as in the OXXRON, which uses galvanized steel for the chassis and treated steel for the panels. The Rhania Hunter beats it out with a corrosion resistant steel chassis and a bare steel body - highlighting how good cor-res really is for this stat.
  • In fact, cor-res steel is the chassis material for 8 of the top 10 cars, with only the RAUK and Primus being exceptions - but the only remaining cor-res car, the Wells Sidewinder, is close to the bottom for some reason.

So far, my entry has done consistently well - enough to put it in the lead for now. I wonder what the remaining categories will bring? Whatever it is, I remain optimistic of a strong result.

Round 5: Interior Space

Whilst delivery trucks take care of Samantha's booze-stocking business and she doesn't exactly have a family to drop off around town on a daily basis, Samantha remembers the Cavalier and understands that having a bunch of space at your disposal is always useful; one never knows what they might need to transport.

MOST SPACIOUS: 2007 Rhania Hunter - @happyfireballman (272.24 cf)

The Rhania Hunter is the only SUV here… And it’s a big one, with a wheelbase exceeding that of a Tahoe. In a sea of other picks that mostly don’t even reach 4 doors, it’s a pretty obvious standout winner. Samantha muses that she could start a delivery service with one, were the liquor part of it allowed by law.

MOST CRAMPED: 1969 Mayster Triumf 2.0 Coupe - @AndiD (64.68 cf)

…The 1600-pound Mayster, meanwhile, fits nothing. Not much of a surprise.

Interesting Facts

  • The mere presence of the Rhania more than halves the scores received by the rest of the field… “thanks a lot”.
  • Interior height seems to have played an outside role in how this metric was decided: for example, the OXXRON Artillery and the Aero Zip had minimally different scores, despite the former being a sedan with a 114-inch wheelbase and the latter having an 85-inch one - but as a tall hatch.
  • A hatchback itself seemed to play as a winning form-factor: Everything between the Hunter and the Artillery technically is one.

Did you have any methodology other than A-to-B comparison to determine space? Judging JOC3 entries, I’m finding game stats about useless for the job.

Round 6: Fuel Economy

When you’re a small business owner, your cost of living is practically always on the balance sheet along with company expenses, except it’s worse because it’s also not tax-deductible. It’s not like Samantha can’t afford the cheap and plentiful gas coming in from Texas - but an extra dollar spent on gas is still an extra dollar not spent on something like a good meal, a nice dress, or the ever-handy investment account.

THRIFTIEST: 2009 Eltrè Elite200 1.6 Cabriohtach - @Hilbert (38.53 mpg)

With its modern direct-injected motor - which also happens to be positively tiny at 1.5l - the quirky Elite200 has the best EPA-certified mileage out of the lot. This is despite being significantly heavier than the other new car on Sam’s list, the Aero Zip, and having a higher-strung engine. Sam may have her reservations against the big-eyed styling of the Eltrè, but she can’t deny that it’s competent.

THIRSTIEST: 1969 Carrol ShieldTail StreetMachine - @DrDoomD1scord (9.99 mpg)

And then on the other hand of the spectrum, the all-around hilarious racing kit car that is the ShieldTail yields an equally hilarious 10 mpg combined - meaning much less anywhere around the city. Between the absurdly lopey cams, the huge and rich-running carbs, and a drag coefficient that fans of the car estimate to be 0.6, which is worse than a literal spheroid that is taller and wider than it is long - it’s not much of a surprise. Sam supposes that the Carrol is a purchase she’d make only if it’s worth committing.

  • Of the six cars in the competition that weigh under a ton, the Mayster and the Veloce - the lightest and third-lightest, respectively - hold the dubious honor of having sub-20 mpg fuel economy. With both being old carbureted sports cars, though, that is also hardly a surprise.
  • The mean fuel economy is 22.81 mpg - very close to the Swanson’s value. The Swanson, being ranked 12th, is also just one position off being the median value.

Not to be picky, but you missed a spot

Round 7: Drivability

Having driven manual, traction-control-less shitboxes, Samantha doesn’t need or want a self-driving one - but what she does want is a car that’s capable of following her commands well. It’s one thing to have a car that might be a bit outdated - and another entirely to miss a day of work because the car decided it’d rather be in a hedge.

MOST DRIVABLE: 2009 Aero Zip - @Edsel (77.94)

On the above criterion, the Aero Zip is king. The new car’s reviews are bristling with praise for its dime-size turning circle, smart variable steering, and tiny, extremely parkable body. And with a complete stability control system, it will never decide it’s better off rolled over on the side of the road - in theory, anyways.

MOST UNDRIVABLE: 1970 Arion Aquila 8C Pursuit - @Aruna, @benjamintamilia (41.80)

The same cannot be said for the Aquila. The muscle car - according to its own enthusiasts on the forums - has multiple wheel-chirping gears and tends to turn rather more than requested, often leading unaccustomed drivers to overcorrect and initiate nasty slides - to say nothing of the liftoff snap potential.

Interesting Facts

  • To nobody’s surprise, the 4 cars that have ESC this round are the top four.
  • The Norðwagen is the highest performer to not have TC, and the Phénix is the higher one with no driver’s aids at all. And both of those names have characters you won’t find on a QWERTY keyboard…
  • The Swanson once again ends up close to the round’s mean value with a drivability of 55.15 versus the mean’s 55.63. For an average-scoring car in so many categories, it’s awfully high up!
  • The score spread this round would be a whole third tighter without the best and the worst cars on this list, each clearing their nearest neighbors by over 5 points.

What about wannabe 911s?

Modern Icelandic QWERTY can do it… otherwise, Nordwagen or Nordhwagen is considered acceptable.

Unsurprising result; Skadhi was carefully tuned for “actual drivability” with minor regard for the stat. Like most of my creations, it was set up as I’d do it IRL. LSD >> TC; its inclusion would’ve been pure stat-chasing. I disable or delete it from my real cars.

Well, it looks like I built a late '70’s muscle car with all of the problems of an old car, but none of the coolness lol.

Round 8: Reliability

So far, Sam had been looking at criteria that she wanted to be informed about, but which didn't constitute make-or-break points in her search. However, if Samantha's new car can't be trusted to haul her to work and back every day, it might as well be an expensive street ornament. Thus, the first 10pts judging category is reliability.

MOST RELIABLE: 2005 Kaseal Pulss 2.2 - @vouge (82.34)

Sam likes what she’s hearing about the Kaseal Pulss. Apparently, the block is pretty handily overbuilt, the injection is reliable, the body fit and finish is excellent, and the top is just a rag with a couple of seals and latches so there’s nothing to break there.

MOST FINICKY: 1972 Joliette Duchesse - @thecarlover (60.59)

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Joliette Duchesse is an entry-level model of a French high-luxury brand - and already full of various doodads including 70s motorization tech for the interior amenities and an old aluminum block known for its iron cylinder liners and aluminum heads… having trouble communicating and chewing up gaskets. Judging by what the enthusiast forums state, it’s less dependable than even the Veloce with its known-to-be-underbuilt bottom end, and Sam didn’t even know you could get any worse than that.

Interesting Facts

  • 18 cars out of 25 have changed positions - meaning this is the highest-impact round since the first one. Makes sense with the larger points reward.
  • There is a trend of new cars being more reliable than old ones, despite older cars having a higher budget for quality; this is likely because the money was spent on luxuries and the like.
  • We finally have a mean value that doesn’t land on anybody: 72.12. The number does land neatly between the Armor Hurricane - the median scorer - and the Tarske C22. The bell curve is strong with this one.
  • With one 5-point and 3 10-point rounds remaining, it is now mathematically impossible for the OXXRON Artillery GT to emerge as the winning car - marking our first elimination.

What does Texaslav mean when they say a car is overbuilt or underbuilt?

They are general adjectives describing if something like a part or a system in a car is too strong and reliable or too weak and unreliable for its purpose, respectively. Overbuilt is usually still a good thing because it just means the part or system in question will survive longer in bad conditions or with lacking maintenance.
