I see Swanson’s reputation is reinforced. Mayster/Mara as well.
I finally went up a slot! Without particular reliability effort, Skadhi is definitely a case of spending budget on features more than reliability, but it manages to be ok anyway.
Really liking the trivia and statistics! Two requests: more by-year trends for all criteria. And for this criterion - any noteworthy trends or outliers per equipment level? Specifically, did anything with a premium or higher interior outperform Skadhi for reliability?
(…did anyone even use a Sport or higher interior?)
Yes, the Norðwagen’s standard interior and premium entertainment were only on par for “reliability for performance”.
The Phénix Hyperion S had sport/premium interior and managed a higher reliability score; the KHI Stellia ZR and the Knightwick Puma are both prem/prem and high up on the leaderboard, too. Both the Swanson and Aero Zip (!) had sport/standard.
There’s no “negative” outliers, really - nobody has a basic interior and your car is one of only five (alongside the Rhania, OXXRON, Kaseal and Eltrè) - to have a standard interior, and you guys are all in the top half. Four cars have luxury interiors, including the least-reliable Joliette; seven went for sport; and the remaining nine have a premium interior.
A similarly pertinent issue as reliability: Samantha doesn't wanna buy a car that she then can't afford to service or repair. Being relegated to riding along or not getting to work because of expensive tires, long labor hours for ordinary maintenance items - anything of that matter - could disrupt business and make her look like a fool. Thus, the more straightforward a car is to maintain, the better.
The Eclair is nice, basic and fixable - kind of like its name - and its parts are pretty cheap. Samantha supposes there is an advantage to having pop-up mechanisms that bolt directly to the front.
The LS50 - so far a very appealing choice - finally shows a weakness, and that weakness is a bespoke V12 that is impossible to operate on without straight up lifting the whole thing out the car - as well as packing a high number of parts that literally aren’t even produced anymore. By far the most expensive car to service, the LVC supercar promises to be a massive pain in the behind.

Interesting Facts
We have a new record for biggest position change: The LVC LS50 at a staggering -10 positions on the leaderboard.
Without just the last 3 cars, the spread of service cost scores would have been three times as tight; the mean svc result, $1131, is closest to the RAUK Huldra - ranked 19th here but still managing to rack up 8.35 points thanks to the bottom outliers.
The Eclair somehow manages to win the day in spite if having staggered tires, a sports interior and luxury entertainment. If you were to reduce the Eclair’s interior to basic and give it a square tire setup, its SVC value would have been $432.
With 25 points being the biggest point deficit one can “make up”, the Carrol ShieldTail and the Rhania Hunter are now also mathematically eliminated.
With all the practical concerns evaluated, Samatha now has an order for all the cars which are cool as well as they are sensible. However, she isn't looking at those characteristics alone: the new car would be all the sweeter if it were to also answer Sam's desire to have a car that's nice to ride in, respected by strangers, and can blow the doors off at least some of today's modern traffic. Here's how they all stack up on that second count.
The LS50, unsurprisingly, is by some margin the most respected and recognizable car out of the crop. Is it really a surprise? V12. Mid-engine. Well-upholstered. Faster than any other car in contention. The LS50 is among the few cars in Samantha’s budget that qualifies as a legitimate dream car even for extremely non-discerning car people.
MOST INAUSPICIOUS: 1971 Veloce Canneloni II GTC - @Ch_Flash (24.86)
The Veloce Canneloni, also a sporty car, does have a dedicated following and might have been pretty prestigious in some alternate reality; problem is, though… It was so outdated (This thing has no techpool aside from the default) and unreliable even for the period when it was new that its would-be fame has changed to infamy. With at least 2 motion pictures of note using the Canneloni’s flimsy nature as a plot point, it is a commonly-known fact that despite the pretty dashing exterior, what this car is… Is a shitbox.

Interesting Facts
The mean value this round is 40.74 - almost exactly equaling the Oryu Destriero GT’s prestige. With that car placing 14th, this means the mean and median are back to being close together.
Top speed played an important role in determining prestige. All cars topping out at under 124 mph/200 kph placed in the bottom third, in 18th or below.
The Veloce Canneloni II GT and the Eclair can no longer win mathematically. There are only 20 theoretically possible winners remaining.
A lot of bikers - some even being Sam's friends and online penpals - call cars "cages". Now, the Bonneville has never felt like a cage to Sam, but if there are cars that do resemble cages in terms of comfort - and one would do well to stay away from those. Samantha would rather have something that more closely resembles a couch.
MOST COMFORTABLE: 1969 Carrol ShieldTail StreetMachine - @DrDoomD1scord (41.27)
It’s mighty surprising, then, that out of all the cars on Samantha’s list, the weird 60s street rod is the sofa of choice. A 2-seater with just about the highest-quality leather to see a production line and a sound system that may well put modern ones to shame, as well as a cushier-than-expected IRS, the Carroll makes a great impression; hell, the sound system is so good that it can out-shout the massively loud engine. A drawback is that the manual steering at this car’s weight is pretty hard to actuate, but otherwise? This is a fluffy sheep in lion’s clothing. It’s just too bad its other drawbacks have already put it out of serious contention.
MOST UNPLEASANT: 1971 Veloce Canneloni II GTC - @Ch_Flash (9.68)
Another less-than-honorable mention for the Canneloni: it’s not exactly cozy in there. The suspension is desperately overdamped, it’s loud, the brakes are screechy and barely work when cold, and it has a rear bench that really has no place in a 92-inch-wheelbase sports car. Not even the relatively advanced IRS and the high interior material quality can save it.

Interesting Facts
The mean comfort value is 27.35, between the Rhania Hunter and the Knightwick Puma… Eh, that’s not very interesting.
There’s hardly any correlation between the release year of each car and its comfort stat. However, the 12 most comfortable cars have no more than 4 seats: benches are bad, apparently.
With only the sportiness round remaining - and remember, 7 points for sportiness and 3 for acceleration - half the roster is mathematically out. Only the Norðwagen Skaði and all the cars with the higher score - that is, positions 13 and up - are still in the running.
Same here with 21.5. I was expecting a lot better, but based on this and on JOC3C judging, it looks like most people overkill comfort… (says the entrant of a 100+ comfort car in QFC23). Or at least get higher ratings there than expected.
Well, that really was my last bullet (being 2nd is quite decent), but that also means I am out. The Merit excels on comfort, but at the price of low sportiness for a two door coupe.
Climbs to 4th and stays there…by staying average
Sportiness is supposed to be my party trick, but 4 points better than the Puma & Pulss? Doubt
Not to mention, there’s probably at least one car trucking along with single digit sportiness…
At the end of the day, and with energy drinks strewn across her room, Samantha evaluates the final thing she cares about in her future car: The thrill of it. The quick and dynamic feel people praise so often is priority #1 - though Sam also keeps an eye on how quick each car really is. And once this is sorted, it’ll all be over - Samantha will have her decision made.
The Norðwagen being the sportiest doesn’t come as a surprise. Though the LVC is a smidge quicker, the Skaði is a homologation special with a very specialized engine sporting a hyper-light clutch; this makes it more than a match for anything attainable for Samatha’s budget.
Similarly, Samantha isn’t particularly fazed by the online spit-roasting the Rhania Hunter’s dynamic properties get. Brick-slow and with dull driving characteristics (though astonishingly, on that metric the Eltrè Elite200 may be even duller), this SUV does not spark joy - it’s just not capable of such.

Interesting Facts
The mean sportiness value is 33.14, putting it very close to the median car; for 0-60, however, the 6.73 mean is slower than 16 of the cars - the two slowest (above-10s) cars provide a notable spoiler effect.
All of the 21st Century cars are below average this round, pretty much guaranteed to be such due to lack of funds - though a total no-show from the 00s light sports car crowd is surprising.
The overall competition winner, the Knightwick Puma, hasn’t won or rock-bottomed a single round - much like last time, if I recall correctly.
Sam was happy with her decision: the funky Knightwick might not have been the fastest car of the lot - but it still hauled ass and handled well. It wasn’t the roomiest - but there was still room in the back for 2 of her shorter friends and some booze crates if really need be. It couldn’t even be called the coolest, though it was unquestionably stone cold. Having called in a favor to have one of her dad’s old drinking buddies get her to Tulsa, Sam made the purchase; the car seemed to be in good shape, and re-affirmed Sam’s joy at finally getting a car with some serious flair…
Right up until a rainstorm on the way home revealed that Sam had failed a spot check: the left wiper blade was missing. She was lucky to even reach the next gas station, where she had to take five to calm down from the mini-heart attack the situation had caused, and then take ten more trying to find a blade that fit. Oh well; that’s life! Ask for excitement and you shall receive… More than you bargained for.
“The Norðwagen being the sportiest doesn’t come as a surprise.” It did to me; other than the odd dyno queen or halo car costing deep into $ix figures, Norðwagen are not generally known for sportiness, let alone a degree that beats at least two MR supercars and a Swanson. OTOH, I had expected a better comfort result.
At the same time, from the first running prototype, Skaði did seem special, one of my better designs overall, and by far the best reasonably-priced one.
I observe mid 80s to mid 90s cars dominating this round. I’ve long identified that as a sort of Golden Age of real-world cars, when old problems were largely solved, and new ones not yet invented or legislatively deployed.
My intuition said rather early that the Puma was a winner…seems like I was right.
Congratulations to mart1n2005, and I hope that Samantha knows why the british are drinking warm beer.
Also:
I can only agree there, my father has been dailying a 1989 Mercedes 300E for many years now, the thing seems to simply be unkillable while it still is a comfortable cruiser that you can just jump into and drive any distances without getting tired, and performance that still holds up. Sure, there were many lemons in this era, but the cars that were actually good…they were terrific.
In scoring JOC3, I came up with two metrics that proved very useful: sum of sportiness and comfort (“spumfort”) and product of same (“promfort”). The former gives a pretty good idea of how well the car does at least something, the latter of how well-balanced it is at doing everything. Will you humor me and post a chart with those numbers?
Well, it certainly makes the Daytona look majestic
Also, if you were using “promfort” as a significant judging characteristic in JOC3C, I’d venture to say it’s a big part of why the Waldersee had to sit out the finals. I focused on the comfort.
I really didn’t expect this after the first half of the challenge, but I guess I was lucky changing from a 2 seat roadster to the shooting brake variant.
Thanks to @Texaslav for running a really good challenge
And I’m not sure if this is supposed to be recurring, if people want another cool wall I have a few challenge ideas in my head. Just probably best to sit on it for a few months as we are very challenge heavy right now
