S06E05: The Unequal Duo

Trigger Warning: This is supposed to be an accurate 90s cop show and modest violence seen in these things. Please make sure this is suitable for you before reading.

In early morning dawn, two gangsters are doing a deal at a lonely spot next to a channel in Berlau: Drugs against money. Antonio Montana drives off with the money in his Cavaliere, while Jörg Fuhrmann calls his boss.

Fuhrmann, show these Frunians whose territory this is. I want my money back. Prove an example on Montana!

Montana does not suspect a trap, and is busy making plans.

Mamma Mia, this will please il padrone. And finally I can buy my nonna her house at the beach.

But then the Nordwagen appears behind the Cavaliere and rams it, and Montana tries hard with his Cavaliere to avoid being stopped by the mighty Nordwagen with a V16.

Despite all efforts, Montana is pushed off the highway bridge, falling down the intersection. The totally crushed Cavaliere landed on the hard shoulder, Montana is unconscious and critically injured.

Fuhrmann arrives soon after, taking the exit down from the A10 to the A2, and robs the money and kills Montana with a headshot.

Soon after Frank and Sarah investigate the assasination, meeting up with Uwe Holtmann and… a new officer.

So, who are you?

Polizeiobermeister Udo Kaportke. I am the replacement for…

Jakob Walkowski, I know. Tragic story. Welcome onboard. I am Kriminaloberkommissar Frank Batimus, leading the criminal investigations on Berlaus highways and the area around it. What do we have yet?

A truck driver saw a large black vehicle speeding off, an older model, maybe Gasmean.

Kaportke, get me a list of all stolen cars of the last 48 hours. Gangsters do not tend to use their own cars, maybe we are lucky.

Inspector Maier, we have scratches of black paint, as far as we can tell, the car was pushed off the bridge down to the A2, then the driver of the black car killed Mr. Montana, then drove off.

Good, Kaportke, what is with our list?

Just arrived, Officer Holtmann noted everything down for you with addresses.

Sarah, what is it this time?

I just shouldnt have gotten up this time. It is 4:30 AM and already just misery.

Well, that is our job.

You say it so cold, just like Klaus. Is Antonio Montana also just a case number for you? I get that he was a criminal, but murder is not a punishment that I can accept.

So, the best thing to do is getting the murderer then, right? And don´t start again with Klaus. Here, a 1970 Nordwagen Odin S16, stolen from a casino owner this night. I think that is quite the machine to catch up with a Cavaliere Nobile Cesare. The other cars are too slow. A Vaughn in Teberau, a Globus in Gernau, you get it. This Nordwagen has been stolen in Berlau just recently and is powerful as hell. Wake up Harry and let him check it.

What do you mean with… the business is not taking off, Brat? JAKE, YOU GOT A 100.000 MARK COMPENSATION WHEN YOU LEFT JUST WEEKS AGO. No, I dont have savings… My cellphone rings, it´s Sarah, that means work. I will help you one way or another but now I have to end the call. I will come up with something, obiecal!

Meanwhile, Jörg Fuhrmann is hungry, and the fastfood restaurant on the A10 offers breakfast starting at 5AM - so just now - and he takes the chance.

At the same time, Kriminalkommissar Harald Walkowski arrives at the casino in Berlaus shady Nokturngasse, and starts questionning the owner of the stolen Nordwagen.

Mr. Walkowski, someone must have stolen the keys out of my pocket, when my coat was at the wardrobe. I don´t always have an eye on it.

So, staff access only. So, I need a list of your staff, Mr. Wirth.

Minus the ones that were still there when I noticed the theft, I guess.

No! I mean, the one who stole the keys can have passed them to another person during the shift.

Sure. This might take an hour. Here are some very nice slot machines, inspector, here are a few coins, enjoy yourself in the meantime. I`ll get you served some coffee.

Just then, a boy noticed that the keys of the Nordwagen were left in the ignition. He takes the chance and speeds off, and Fuhrmann runs out but can not catch up - and he left the gun, the cocaine and the money in the trunk.

The boy, of course not having a license, is overwhelmed by the power and size of the car and causes an accident in Berlau, and escapes since he does not want to be put back in the orphanage.

He continues driving to a retirement home, entering for his grandfather.

Who are you?

It´s me, Tim, your grandson.

I dont even have kids.

You just dont remember them, you cared for me when my parents died in a car crash until…

Until what?

You got dementia a year ago. Here, look at this photo. We were so happy together, and you told me how much you liked being Captain of that ship in Wildufer.

SHIP AHOI! Helm, set course for Terso!

So, you want to get back to Wildufer, and have a trip like we used to, when you showed me the harbor on our holidays?

SURE! Eh, who were you again?

In the department, Kriminalrat Bernd Schneider is nervous and calls Frank and Sarah into his office.

A MURDER ON THE HIGHWAY ON THE DAY OF MY PROMOTION! Damn. All eyes are on me today. This case needs to be solved fast.

Could you care a bit less about yourself and more about the case?

Sarah, lower your voice. I do care about the case. But this morning is just cursed. Here, a fax just came in. A 14 year old boy escaped from the orphanage. Tim Gottschalk, here is the paper with the information. And a boy matching his description caused a car crash in Berlau in a large, old and black car. I want you to call Harry and make him stop the boy, you will have to search for the murderer as a duo.

A BLACK, OLD AND LARGE CAR? Was it a Nordwagen Odin?

Eeeeh, let me check… registration Berlau-MF 21. Nordwagen Odin S16, why? How did you know?

SARAH, LETS DRIVE TO THE ORPHANAGE! Boss, I will explain you later.

What a desolate environment. And then they put kids in it that have lost their home and family. Of course this feels like prison and they run away.

Sarah, you are not his lawyer. He is doing dangerous driving with a car that was used in a murder, THIS is our priority.

Sure, a 14 year old is an ice cold killer, killing a mafia dealer. SURE, FRANK!

I did not say that he did that, but he is driving the car and might have seen the murderer, and then he is in fucking danger!

No, Miss Maier, he was mostly calm and … not aggressive or such. He came to us a year ago after his grandfather burned down the house as he forgot to turn off the stove. Dementia, a sad story.

And before?

The parents died in a car crash in 1995. No other relatives left that wanted to take care of him. The paternal grandparents are long gone already. He barely talked with anybody and missed his grandfather.

Who can help us with information?

He liked a teacher, Mr. Öhler. He is also his class teacher. And I can give you the adress of the care home too, but I don´t think grandpa Wilfried will be helpful.

Harry has been told to check for the senior, but Wilfried Gottschalk is nowhere to be found.

So, the last time you saw him he was with his grandson? Have you seen where they were heading? Have you listened to anything?

We are care personnel, no detectives. Of course not. The dementia patients have a bracelet that rings a bell as soon as they leave the building. And… well, the bracelet was removed, I guess.

The mood in the department could be better…

So, Harry, you want to tell me that we have a 14 year old boy possibly carrying cocaine and gun and a 73 year old man without memory driving around in a car that is searched by a merciless murderer?

More or less… yes.

Well, forget that list. If the car really has drugs and cash in it, the driver from this morning will surely be after it. When we get the Nordwagen, we also get our asshole. Let´s drive to that teacher, and I send Sarah out on the highways Every patrol car in Berlau and surroundings is now looking for the Nordwagen. Harry, get the car.

Meanwhile, an officer of the Berlau Metropolitan police gets an unpleasant visit during his shift.

Officer Zehnpfennig! May I remind you of your debts? Your horse bets and casino visits have been … not successful lately, hm?

Oh, Mr. Fuhrmann… I will pay Mr. Wirth, surely tomorrow… I promise!

Oh, you can help me a bit… I heard you look for an old Nordwagen…

I can´t tell anything about my work, I will pay, I promise! ARGH!

I WILL BEAT YOU UP EVEN MORE TO THE POINT YOUR OWN FAMILY WILL NEVER RECOGNIZE AGAIN IF I DONT GET ALL INFORMATION! Here is a phone number. Update every 10 minutes OR YOU WILL FACE A FATE WORSE THAN DEATH!

Wildufer! The boy who stole the car took the grandfather with him and the order was to look for them in that direction.

About the same time, Frank and Harry arrive at the adress - it´s the last days of the summer holidays, and the teacher is at home.

Günther Öhler tells the inspectors that the dream of Tim Gottschalk was having one last holiday with his grandfather before he degenerates too much to do this, and that Wilfried Gottschalk was a captain of a trade ship in Wildufer for decades, so the two spent their holidays often there, while grandpa Gottschalk talked about the good old times. Frank and Harry pass the information on to Sarah, who organizes a roadblock on the highway to Ibenhafen, just in front of the junction to the highway to Wildufer.

In that moment, at the mansion of Kalle Wirth:

Marcel, the fucking idiot Jörg got the car stolen by a damn teenager, with the cash and cocaine in it. I want you to make sure he gets it back and then eliminate him. I do not need dumbasses working for me, understood? They are using the A2 towards Ibenhafen, and will propably then take the exit onto the A20 to Wildufer and use the country roads then instead, as the highway patrol will surely block the A20.

While the Nordwagen now exits Berlaus suburbs and heads to the outer ring, Sarah is on her way.

Mamba 12 for Mamba 12-4, please confirm. I am on the A2 heading southwest, directly to the roadblock. No sight of the suspect yet. And again, DO NOT SHOOT. The boy and the geezers are no criminals. Try it the friendly way. They must be there any minute, I am … eh, ten minutes away.

In the Nordwagen, the problem indeed shows up now.

Oh, a traffic jam?

Yes, grandpa.. maybe because of a… FUCK! POLICE STOP!

Is that a Problem, Egon?

I am Tim. Egon was your brother, so, my grand-uncle. Anyway, it miiiiiiiiiight beeeeee…

Fuhrmann is already directly behind Tim, and decides to act fast since he wants to get the cash, drugs and gun back before it falls into the hands of the police officers. Realizing that he is about to be screwed as the Nordwagen is almost the next car to be controlled, Fuhrmann runs out with a gun and wants to grab Tim, who sees the approaching man in the mirror, and, in a panic reaction, speeds off.

Tim crashes through the roadblock, almost running over Holtmann and Kaportke. Fuhrmann runs back to his Primus Imperator and chases Tim.

Udo Kaportke enters his car and starts the pursuit, but Fuhrmann wants to kill Tim before the police could arrest him, so the criminal shoots on Kaportke first and disables his vehicle.

Mamba 12 for Mamba 12-8, please confirm. Suspect Tim Gottschalk crashed through the roadblock. He is chased by a purple Primus Imperator Turbo, registration Berlau-Ulrich-Victor-7845. Imperator driver is armed and not afraid to use his firearm. And, I need a towtruck and a good scotch. Damn, what a first day at the new department…

POM Kaportke, are you ok?

Sure… Inspector Maier, I am sorry.

ITS FINE! Really, the most important is that you are OK. I am passing you in a minute and will be soon right behind the two cars. I need assistance.

Fuhrmann fires on the Nordwagen, but fails to hit the tires or occupants, and Tim causes an accident in a desperate escape attempt. Fuhrmann was unable to see what direction the Nordwagen took after the corner, and decides for the false one.

Wondering where the Nordwagen is, Fuhrmann realizes that he lost Tim, and yells in anger. Just in that moment, Sarah passes him and realizes that she just met one of the wanted cars.

Mamba 12-4! Requiring assistance! In pursuit of the Imperator! He is now driving west on the L72.

Car is registrated on Jörg Fuhrmann. Spent nine years in prison, he is extremely dangerous. Be careful! Batimus and Walkowski are twenty minutes away but closing fast!

Fugitive turns into a quarry. Hurry up!

Damn, where is he?

Fuhrmann uses his car as a cruise missile, trying to ram Sarah to dust, but misses by centimeters… a scared Sarah realizes that she escaped her possible death by a small margin.

He is gone. Damn. Tried to throw his car onto mine, but failed. Escaped on foot… I will try to find him.

This is Kriminaloberrat Schneider. Yes, my promotion just happened, sadly without your presence… Anyway, keep up the good work, but drive directly to Wildufer. Secure the evidence in form of the Nordwagen and bring grandfather and grandson safely back. Batimus and Walkowski will deal with Fuhrmann.

Marcel! What a coincidence! We have to…

It is no coincidence. Jump in and let us get the work done.

Meanwhile, Tim and Winfried stop at a river.

Do you remember how you taught me fishing here, when we drove to our summer holidays on your boat?

No.

But I do, and… I hope you enjoy this day with me.

Hah! When I tell the old geezers from the chess club that we were chased with gunfire, haha, they wont believe that, HAHAHA! Eh, why were we chased in first place? Who are you?

Not far away, half an hour later, Frank and Harry encounter a van.

Mamba 12-2 to Mamba, since Fuhrmann is an employee of Kalle Wirth, … I saw a van in the backyard of the casino matching the car in front of us, can you check B-MP 2465?

Marcel Posselt, also an employee of Wirth. Previously convicted with aggravated assault.

Tough one, eh? All right, we`ll stop him. Frank, lets go.

Does he slow down?

Seems so… NO! HE AIMS FOR OUR REAR QUARTER!

CRAP! FRANK! DO SOMETHING! I DROPPED MY GUN, BUT HE GRABS HIS!

Harry, I try to make him spin us. Hold on!

Worked! Now, get your gun ready this time. Nobody scratches my car without getting arrested!

Jörg, what are you doing?

I saw you have gasoline canisters here - and that the bastads are after us again. Slow down and keep the car straight, so that I can aim better.

Good. Open the sliding door as late as you can to surprise them!

UUAAAAAAH!!!

THAT BASTARD! FRANK, NOW YOU RAM HIM OFF THE ROAD!

I have a hard time staying on the road myself, Harry!

He cant have an endless amount of canisters, and when they ran out of them, I will smack their asses, Frank!

WATCH OUT!

FUCK!

RUN, FRANK!

WHAT DO YOU THINK AM I DOING HERE? BUT I NEED TO GET THE PHONE AND GUN OUT, WE NEED IT IF THE TURNS BACK TO US!

No, they will be more focussed on the Nordwagen! MOVE IT!

BANG

Some time later, the Nordwagen stops at a gas station.

Come on, let´s change the ride.

I like this one. Reminds me of my boat.

But the tank is empty and we don´t have money. Do you like that light blue one?

Sure, sure, a color like a salmon. That pleases an old seawolf.

But how do you know how to steal a car?

When I was straying around on the streets I got to know Jenny, an orphan. She also taught me driving. Sadly she was locked away in a closed dorm for girls some weeks ago,

What an adventure. So, you will also free that pirate girl? I could need her onboard, when I return to my ship.

You are retired by now, what you surely forgot again, buuuut… yeah, sounds like a plan.

SET SAIL, TOM!

Tim, grandpa.

Fifteen minutes later, Sarah arrives at the scene, confiscating the contents of the trunk: Tim never opened it and left the cash, cocaine and gun in it. The proof against Fuhrmann is solid, leading to a possible arrest of Kalle Wirth as well. And she could get the information that the duo continued their drive with a Kaizen FC15.

Meanwhile, in Berlau, Polizeihauptmeister Zehnpfennig updates Fuhrmann on the situation - and provides them with the new car and its registration, being afraid that Fuhrmann would otherwise take revenge on his family, so betraying the uniform seems like the only way out.

FINALLY WILDUFER! Your old home!

I… REMEMBER! Just up there lived my first love. Aaaaah, Trude…

Her name was…Trude?

But the gangsters are already closing up and firing bullets at the Kaizen of Tim, who drives as fast as he can to escape.

Not being experienced with driving, Tim does not notice a reversing car and slams into it, then into a parked Anhultz. Before Tim and Wilfried could run, they are already threatened with guns and forced to enter the van.

The Wildufer police is well aware of the situation as Kriminaloberrat Schneider updated them from Berlau, and they immediately react and pass the information back that a kidnapping has just happened. Sarah is immediately on her way, as she is already in Wildufer, too.

The Wildufer police had hours to prepare for a showdown, and almost all ways are blocked. Marcel Posselt and Jörg Fuhrmann are caught in a trap.

HAUPTKOMMISSAR FISCHER, WILDUFER POLICE! PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM AND EXIT YOUR VEHICLE!

I have your back, inspector Fischer! I am Kommissarin Maier from the Berlau Highway patrol!

Welcome in town, lady. So, LAST WARNING! LET OUT THE HOSTAGES AND WE CAN DISCUSS!

WE ARE NOT DUMB TO GIVE YOU OUR LIFE INSURANCE, INSPECTOR!

In that moment, Wilfried Gottschalks dementia kicks in. Not knowing where he is and how he got there, he attacked Fuhrmann in panic, and a gunshot got loose… directly onto the one remaining gas canister.

The exploson kills all four occupants, and injures inspector Fischer, who gets thrown meters away from the shockwave.

In the evening, a distraught Sarah sits at the beach, leaning against the car and just staring into the ocean, when Frank and Harry arrive to give her some support.

Frank sits down next to Sarah, trying to get some access to her.

You were right this morning, it would have been better indeed to stay in bed. But, IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!

Whose was it, then? The grandpa for getting dementia? The boy for stealing the car? The criminals for doing dirty business? WHOSE FAULT IS IT, FRANK???

This does not matter anymore. What matters is, that it is not yours. Come on, let us find a hotel and a bar.

S06E06a: Under Pressure Pt.1

Trigger Warning: This is supposed to be an accurate 90s cop show and modest violence seen in these things. Please make sure this is suitable for you before reading.

Kriminalkommissar Harald “Harry” Walkowski, drunk and emacitated, is gambling in a shady casino - and seems to have no fortune at all.

Meanwhile, Frank is in an intense high-speed chase.

YES, I AM BEHIND THE BANK ROBBERS! THEY GO 200 KPH IN THE OPPOSITE LANE! FUCK, HOLTMANN, KAPORTKE, WHY ARE THERE STILL CARS FACING US?

Frank, we have blocked the intersection from the A10 to the A2. But, we needed a bit of time until two other units closed the A2. But, what you see there are the very last cars that passed before we really blocked everything.

I HOPE SO!

FUCK! ACCIDENT! YOU SAID YOU BLOCKED EVERYTHING!

Frank, this is the A2. There is LOTS of traffic and we can not secure all accesses immediately.

He! That cop is still behind us. I have never seen someone that determined. Do something! You got the damn gun on the dash, USE IT!

CRAP! THEY OPEN FIRE! ALL UNITS, FUGITIVES ARE NOT HESITATING TO USE A FIREARM!

Frank, break off pursuit, that´s not worth it.

Bullshit! Just be cautious when we arrive, I try to keep them busy!

Eeeeh, FRAAAAAAANK! A TRUCK IS BREAKING THROUGH THE BARRIER! FUUUUUUUUUU…

Kaportke, REPEAT! A TRUCK DID… WHAT? KAPORTKE! RESPOND! DAMN IT!

MAMBA 12-2 TO ALL UNITS! MY RADIATOR HAS BEEN HIT! And… EEEEEEH!!

At least I have a protection shield now, but I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SEE WHERE I AM GOING AT THAT SPEED! FUCK! And the engine is exposed to their bullets now…

FINALLY! UAAAAH! Now they can aim at me again, shit. And the engine doesnt sound good… MAMBA 12-2 TO ALL UNITS! MY ENGINE HAS BEEN DISABLED! YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN NOW.

Mamba 12-2 to all units. Thanks for nothing. They speed off. Where did you build the roadblock? In Archana because it was cheaper there? FUCK!

But right now the bank robbers in their Riegler Solis Turbo face the huge ACZ HAC truck - and a collision at these speeds could not be avoided. The head-on crash is lethal for everyone involved.

When cleaning the mess up, Sarah appears at the scene, and Frank is not amused at all.

Hello! FINALLY! You know what, I tried everything to wake you up this morining, but, as you see, I HAD IT ALL UNDER CONTROL ALONE! GO BACK TO BED AND LET ME MIND MY BUSINESS!

Frank! Please, I…

Lets drive to the department and continue there, I need a ride, since my car HAS TURNED INTO A DAMN SIEVE!

In the department, Frank and Sarah continue arguing.

I know that it has been traumatic for you, what happened in Wildufer, but… you know, we are not just partners in love, but also partners in the job. And here, right here in the department, I need to rely on you. Why don´t you make a therapy and…

FRANK! Being needed here and helping people is the thing keeping me alive at the moment. Do not take that away from me.

But we can´t continue like this. Sarah, really, after I grabbed Harry and teach him how to use knife and fork again, we must work on your unreliability. That is the burden of sharing both bed and desk, I must also act as your superior officer.

In the evening, Kriminaloberrat Bernd Schneider calls Frank in his office.

Frank, let us just sum it up. Your car is a case for the junkyard, the gangsters died, the five million Mark are lost in the fire, and we have a third dead person. What do we know about him?

Dirk Beyer, owner of a small construction business. Sarah and me found out that he wanted to be on time for the birth of his child and therefore crashed through the barrier…

FINE! WHAT A PARTY FOR THE PRESS THEN! Everything that makes people upset sells well.

Boss, I…

Frank, you lately asked me for a promotion to Hauptkommissar. You know what is required there? Exceptional leadership. Harald comes and goes when he wants and I have not seen him in here for days, Sarah is always late and sleeps on duty and has emotional breakdowns. You can not take responsibility because you are afraid of unpopular actions and your leadership is, pardon, shit. Under these circumstances, I will just tear your request apart and lead your team myself.

Captain! I…

You might have the intentions to fix the situation, but what counts are results. ONE WEEK, FRANK! And if you fail to show improvements in the team, I will transfer both Harry and Sarah, and your promotion request will be my toilet paper. I have been very lenient with all of you since carrying on as usual is not easy after such a tragedy, but my patience has come to an end. And now I want you to close my office door from the outside.

Soon after, a frustrated Frank drives home, while Sarah, who drove home earlier after another nervous breakdown, sits in the corner of her living room with the gun in her mouth, but is unable to make the final step and finally shoot herself, still, she can not put the gun away and tries over and over again to have the courage, when Frank enters the apartment and immediately stops his girlfriend from these actions.

SARAH! NO! The death of the boy is not your fault.

I can´t sleep because he visits me in my dreams, whenever I close my eyes… and .. I have flashbacks to Rainer…

YOU WERE NOT A COWARD! Kramer was one of Hetvesias most dangerous mass murders of all time. If you pull the trigger now, Rainer died for nothing. And it will not bring back Tim Gottschalk either.

At the same time, Harry Walkowski enters an industrial area with his Mara and meets up with an unknown person.

Kommissar Walkowski?

Yes. Are you Hauptkommissar Kurt Voss?

I am. So, who told you that I am after the gambling mafia?

I am a criminal investigator myself, Voss, so… I have my methods.

Voss, it happened so fast. My brother is in financial trouble since he emmigrated to Gasmea and his newly founded business fails. And, almost two months ago, I was doing an interrogation in a casino, and… well, tried it. Won quite a sum. And since then…

Walkowski, how much?

I am 200.000 Mark in debt. And my annual salary is 60.000. I am screwed. Either I become corrupt… or… help you arresting them instead. I know, it is dangerous, but I am still a cop wearing that badge with pride, and I would rather die than becoming corrupt, you know?

You did the right thing. So, what can you tell me… eh, did you hear that noise?

What noise? I assumed we are alone.

A bit more than an hour later, suddenly Franks mobile phone rings. An old Mara jeep goes berserk and caused many accidents, and Frank is in reach to interfere.

FRANK! NO! I need you right now here by my side, PLEASE!

SARAH, HE IS COMING RIGHT HERE INTO OUR DIRECTION! And, I can´t let Holtmann and Kaportke do that, I guess they are off duty as well anyway. The Mara is on the A11 city ring, and the metropolitan police can´t even drive at city speeds in a straight line. FUCK! Where are my car keys? I have no time to search them.

FRANK! NOT MY KEYS! NOT MY MARIO!

That´s a routine stop, Mario will be fine.

FRANK! IF YOU GO NOW… FRANK!

A disappointed Sarah left alone asks herself if it is really a good idea to marry Frank Batimus, while he sprints to the Cavaliere Nobile of his girlfriend and speeds off.

Schneider, I am on my way. But, I am in Sarahs car, and I am not sure if that tiny rollerskate is the right tool to stop a Mara jeep.

Don´t worry. I am on duty myself. Just try to slow the Jeep down until I step in.

CAPTAIN, I SEE HIM! Kilometer 15,5!

Ah, damn, I need five minutes to catch up.

While getting updates on the phone, Frank is surprised to hear whose car it is - the Mara is the private car of Harald Walkowski! He tries to find out if it is really Harry behind the wheel and puts himself in danger, but the small Cavaliere is no match for the huge Mara. In a dramatic chase, the Mara spins another car, putting it in the way of Frank who smashes into it - Frank seems miraculously unharmed, but the car is junk.

The jeep continues, despute being damged, as if nothing happened. Bernd Schneider is updated as well, and with a well placed attack, he finally flips the Mara.
Schneider pulls indeed Walkowski out of the car - he is unconscious. But in the trunk of the Mara is a dead man - he is soon identified as Kriminalhauptkommissar Kurt Voss.

.

The medical examinator finds out that Voss has been tortured to death, and Walkowskis fingerprints are on the baseball bat used, as well as Voss´ blood on his clothes.
Walkowski can not remember anything and has a total blackout. The prosecutor Golo Grauss manages to get Walkowski arrested, although there is a trace of an injection in his arm. But no traces of drugs were found in his blood.

Frank, being sure that Harald is innocent and the victim of a setup, calls ME Prof.Dr. Hans Rothkowski for a meetup with him and Sarah.

Professor, there MUST have been a drug involved. You even found the trace from the injection needle.

It could be testosterone, vaccine, anything. Sorry, but I can only write down what I know for sure.

Professor, are there actually drugs that could… just vanish?

I have only heard of vanishing drugs in the evidence room… What you mean might be rapidly degrading drugs. Well, there is an use case for it.

And that is?

Professional sports. Higher, faster, stronger - the human body is today at the limit of what it can deliver. But, thankfully chemistry exists. Of course, successful athletes are controlled, often minutes after their performance. It would be a shame if there was a proof of doping.

Why did you not write it in the report? IT COULD HAVE EXONERATED HARRY!

Inspector Batimus, as I said - Prosecutor Grauss asked for evidence, not speculations.

So, where do I find people that can tell me more about such drugs?

That, inspector, is your part of the investigation. I can only tell from my knowledge, that these things definitely exist, but - without having the actual drug, I can not do anything for your colleague.

Frank, we are screwed. How are we supposed to prove something that does not exist anymore?

Sarah, don´t give up so easy. Harry needs to count on us. Grauss seems full of hate against Harry. Can you look for a connection between them?

Sure, just drop me off at the office… but I must be careful that Schneider doesn´t surprise me doing it. He wants to have the case done “cleanly” by the internal affairs department. And what is your next step?

Doping is only worth the risk if it is about some money. And the most revenue is earned in professional football. I will visit our local premier league club, Fortuna Berlau.

An hour later, Frank arrives at the Berlau stadium, having an appointment with goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly and top-scorer Sebastian Paisler.

Really, inspector, you drag us out of training to accuse us of doping?

NO! I do not accuse anybody of you. I just want to know if… there are rumors.

What has the highway patrol to do with that? I thought the organized crime squad is on that subject.

Really?

Inspector, I guess that´s as always with state organized things like the police, the left hand does not know what the right one does.

Mr. Paisler, I can guarantee you that I have a very valid interest in information. ANY information. Please proceed.

Usually manipulation happened with paid referees, that´s a lot more effective than doping. But… since Robert Freundser has been caught, it´s all strictly controlled and barely possible, so… well, yes, you have to go back to doping. Gabor, you have been adressed, right?

50.000 Mark per match, and 10.000 for everyone else I convince to join. Of course I declined. If we had accepted, we would have an advantage and the bet mafia would have made a lot of money with our victory. They told us the drugs are safe, and can not be found in the blood.

THANKS! And, eh, may I get some autographs of the team?

Later, Frank and Sarah drive to the junkyard, investigating Harrys car.

MY MARIO! FRANK, I HATE YOU!

I… will buy you a newer one.

BUT THAT IS NO LONGER MARIO! AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!

What are you looking for anyway, Frank?

I assume Harry was knocked out and placed in the driver seat. Maybe, the injection happened after they buckled him up behind the wheel.

Frank, these are ice-cold professionals. I can´t see anything in the interior. And the whole car has already been checked for fingerprints. Nothing.

It was just an idea. FUCK, I NEED SOME EVIDENCE! Let´s check for Harry in the prison, he will need our company in there.

It feels so wrong visiting him in here…

Sarah, stay strong. We must at least give him a confident impression.

Frank and Sarah find out that somebody in the prison leaked that Harry is a cop - and he now gets beaten up seriously.

Although Schneider is nervous about that, he insists on not breaking any rule, even if they maybe don´t have much time left. This causes Frank to argue with his boss.

CAPTAIN! Yesterday and today it was fists, when is it a knife? Harry will be dead soon!

SHUT UP! You have done investigations AGAINST my order, and even interviewed Fortuna Berlaus team.

But wasn´t that interessing?

Generally yes. I have asked for insight in the files of the organized crime department, but the access was denied, despite me having a very high approval level. All I can do is writing an official complaint, but that takes a while.

HARRY DOES NOT HAVE A WHILE!

I can not deny that I am a bit nervous about the threats in prison. I will demand a transfer to another prison as soon as possible, where hopefully nobody recognizes him as former inspector.

How fast will that happen?

Between two days and a week. The more urgent it becomes, the more I can speed it up. Until then I insist that you do not take further action, or I need to collect your badges. Or you get transferred to the internal affairs squad, then you can work on that case. I also took care for a lawyer. Mr. Günter Bess will do the defense. He might be specialized on traffic law, but in 1996 Harry saved his life if I remember correctly, and Bess wants to return the favour. As far as I know, Bess is very successful.

But Dr. Bess can not help him in there right now.

Neither can you! And now get back to work on the highway!

Despite insisting on following the rules of buerocracy and formality, Bernd Schneider can not ignore that Harald Walkowski might be the victim of a setup, and meets up with Klaus Kasupke at night.

Schneider, you have nerves to meet me in the middle of an undercover job.

I would not do this if it was not neccecary. Walkowski is in trouble, and there are signs that it might be in connection with the bet and gamble mafia as well as doping mixers. I have heard that your department is involved in investigations, but the files are impossible to get even for me. What happened?

Schneider, all I know is that my superior officer, Erster Kriminalhauptkommissar Richter from the Landeskriminalamt, passed it on to the DA. And then, we got no new order to do anything else, and a trial has not started yet. Neither does my work matter. It is weird, the investigation was no longer continued and I am now investigating against weapon smugglers.

Who was the prosecutor in the doping case?

Oberstaatsanwalt Golo Grauss.

GRAUSS? Are you sure?

Yes. KHK Kurt Voss did not want to accept that all his work was not used, and tried to continue on his own. You might ask him for further information.

Chief inspector Kasupke, Kurt Voss is dead. It was murder. It all starts to make sense, but I need the files. I hope my complaint will be approved as soon as possible.

The next morning starts with shocking news: Harry has been stabbed, but survived with luck and martial arts skills, and a transfer for the afternoon has been granted.
Meanwhile, Sarah wants to steal the files that Schneider did not get directly from the LKAs archive.

Frank, I am there. Wish me luck.

Sarah, why don´t you just wait for me?

You got things to do Frank, we have only one attempt and you need to focus on that. Your organization and planning skills are vital.

Sarah, please take car.

Sarah sneaks into the archive and indeed manages to find the file whose number Schneider noted down on his desk organizer.

Just when she got all papers together, she almost got caught in the archive and searches for an escape - by using the same way as she got in: The scaffolding at the building. Just in the moment when she escaped onto it, Golo Grauss spots an escaping person and cuts the scaffolding loose.

Even if Sarah hurried up to get down as fast as possbile, the collapsing scaffolding caused a five meter fall, and she has trouble getting up again.

FUCK! AAAAAAAARRRGH! THAT HURT! But… I need to get the job done…

Meanwhile, in front of the prison, Polizeihauptmeister Uwe Holtmann listens to the police radio of the prison and its vehicles, trying to find out when and with which van Harry will be transferred. He uses a prepaid phone to communicate safely, as do Frank, Sarah and Udo.

SARAAAH! Hurry up. Another van just left, but it is not Harry.

Sorry, I had an incident and needed to be stitched back together. Can you tell Frank that I am placing the car at the location in ten minutes?

He is already desperately waiting for you. And I have the news from Udo that the other car is also in position, I can give you the keys as soon as you are here.

Perfect!

Sarah then enters Franks private car, and they continue executing their plan.

Sarah, what happened?

Grauss tried to kill me, but I just broke my hand.

FUCK! Can you drive?

I can vaguely steer with the right hand but need to shift with left… it will be… challenging.

Damn, that´s risky. Should we abort?

NO! I got the files! But I had no time to read them.

Everything at its time.

Frank, I am a bit nervous.

So am I. Are you sure you want to do this? You know, no pension, and propably some time in prison, and Harry proves how “fun” it is for police officers to be in there.

ABSOLUTELY! We have planned it all and started, we are too far done to step back from it anyway. Let´s go.

S06E06b: Under Pressure Pt.2

Trigger Warning: This is supposed to be an accurate 90s cop show and modest violence seen in these things. Please make sure this is suitable for you before reading.

Ah, Dr. Bess. You really got the keys for the van?

Yes, number 1312. As a lawyer, I can move around quite free in prison, I have many clients there. With a hairpin I opened the cabinet and changed the keychains. So, the driver thinks he has the keys, but that´s for another van. Frank, your uniform is in this bag, should be your size, some lockers were left open and I had some to choose from.

Excellent. But how does Sarah know who is the correct driver to distract?

This one over there. Look. Good luck.

So, now we can´t go back. You ready? You remember the instructions?

Sure, Frank. Let me just do my thing there.

Just when the driver of the prison van came out of the restroom to get to work, Sarah appears and seduces him, and since Sarah is not unattractive, the driver forgets about his duty…

OOH! AXEL! I thought I visit you at work. MMMH!

Eeeehhh…

Oh, sorry, I must have mixed you up with my boyfriend! Sorry! Can you show me the main office? He must be there.

I have to drive right now, sorry…

Pleaaaaase…

Frank, in prison clerk uniform, casually walks behind the wheel of the van and drives off. But for security reasons, there is always a patrol car following. Sarah uses chloroforme for the original driver and hides him in a backroom, then runs to Holtmann who waits outside.

UWE! Now, to the car, fast. I must be ready when they pass at the intersection!

Yep, sure. Let´s hope that works..

Frank drives the route that was in the folder on the passenger seat, and tries to be as unsuspicious as he can. Indeed, the drivers behind him do not suspect anything.

Is that the street with the new donut store?

I think so. Mmmmmh.

Fifteen minutes later, Franks prepaid phone rings.

Frank, I am now at the car. Should I proceed to the intersection?

YES! YOU ARE TWO MINUTES LATE! HURRY UP!

All right, I see what I can do.

Pay attention, Harrys Primus is larger and slower than yours, but it´s also heavier, so you should be good at hitting the target.

Yep… I mean, the car will get crashed anyway so I guess I don´t need to be careful with the tires, I am there in time.

Frank suddenly stops at the intersection, slowing down the following patrol car to make aiming for Sarah easier, as she has trouble steering with the injured hand. With some force that is enough to destroy the car, but still too low to seriously harm the other officers, Sarah slams into the side of the patrol officers.

OH CRAP! Are you ok? I did not think that you would stop. Officers, you can´t park there!

YOU DUMB B…

Naaaah! Where are you manners, gentlemen? I mean, for what do we have insurance?

On the roof of a parking lot, Sarah already placed her Primus Merit in advance, but Frank has trouble getting Harry out.

I can´t shoot the lock open, that would cause too much attention. But… the key ring contains the ignition key, not the door key. FUCK!

Frank, the windows are unbreakable, but there must be a way to open this tin can!

Did you say tin can? I have a tin can opener in the car… Sarah was lately too depressed for cooking and well, it is useful then…

Indeed, Frank cuts a hole into the vehicle with the opener, cuts the lock out and opens the rear doors to enter in the getaway car together with Harry.

But prosecutor Grauß already thought of such a prison break performed by Frank and had officers ready near the transfer route. Soon they got two police cars after them, and Grauß yells over radio that ANY FORCE NECCESSARY INCLUDING WEAPONFIRE should be used. The highway department on that channel yells for Bernd Schneider, who runs to the radio table and overrides that announcement.

Frank, we are in quite some trouble.

I KNOW! GIVE ME THAT PREPAID PHONE THERE!

Here you go.

UWE! I AM NOW DRIVING TO THE DÖLLSTRASSE! TAKE OUT MY SHADOW!

I can try Frank, but…

DO IT!

Frank, that Saarland, can you push them into it?

What do you think I am doing here? Let´s GOOOOOOOOOOOO

Uwe, one left. REPEAT, ONE LEFT! Since we have the faster car we have a bit of distance between us. Passing the intersection in 3, 2, 1…

Here we go, Frank, I try to block the road with a shitty powerslide!

Damn, I was already afraid Uwe suddenly does not mess up a drift when he is supposed to.

Yes, I felt the same. Now let´s drive you to a safe place to hide. We pick up Sarah and then proceed to a shady hotel in East Berlau.

YOU MORON! NAME, RANK!

Holtmann, Polizeihauptmeister. Hey, you asked for support over the radio and I was nearby, so I entered the chase. Why did you ram me? I was just here to help.

THIS WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES FOR YOU! ARGH!

While Golo Grauß puts pressure on Schneider to call air support, Schneider makes that take as long as possible, giving Frank enough time to hide Harry at the hotel.

Harry, you still can´t remember anything?

The stuff they gave me was worse than a full box of Dr.Dangoths painkillers… hmm.. is that the file Frank told me about?

Yes, the personnel file of Kurt Voss, and the results of the investigations against the bet mafia and the possible doping laboratory they found.

Wait… hmmm… some of this rings a bell. Frank, get me a beer and a wodka. This will help.

When reading through it, Harry quickly regains his memories and remembers Yulia Sokolov (compare S03 E05 and 10) in her wheelchair behind the murder of Voss and the boss of the bet mafia. Sokolov was seriously injured in a duel with Sarah, that had put Sarah also for some weeks in hospital, and remained paralyzed. In addition, Voss told him which of the suspicious bet dive bars mentioned in the files is the correct one to be Sokolovs hideout. Since Sarah has still a feud with Sokolov, she joins Frank. With a phonecall they inform a furious Bernd Schneider who refuses to provide backup and orders them to come into the department asap. Frank tells him to f…off and read up the word “loyalty” in the dictionnary.

Meanwhile, Yulia Sokolov has been warned that the files were stolen and that Batimus is after her. She quickly commands a mobster to wheel her into her van and get away as soon as possible. Just at the moment Frank arrives at the destination, he spots the white VCV driving off at full speed. Frank puts the Merit into reverse and follows it.

Frank, only Schneider knew that we are going here. What if he is the corrupt one? That would explain why he refused to help Harry!

Sarah, Schneider is waaaay to rule obedient and proud to be corrupt, and I bet if it wasn´t for him, we would be arrested or dead by now. But someone has warned them, that is a fact, so we must get them alive.

FRANK! MY CAR!

This is not your property, the taxpayer owns it.

Wasn´t it enough that you killed Mario?

Frank, this is the industrial area where that drug laboratory is!

Sure, they know the location and want to have an advantage over us here. But, my uncle Andreas works here for decades already, so I … know it even better.

Damn, they enter a warehouse, this could be an ambush!

Frank, continue! No guts, no glory!

EDGAR! THEY ARE STILL BEHIND US! DO SOMETHING!

Does this look like a sports car, miss?

Frank tries to stop the VCV violently by pushing it in a stack of boxes, which should be a soft enough barrier to not kill the occupants, but the VCV takes off into the air, and Frank desperately evades the lifted car.

The VCV crashes into many old and rusty barrels that do not look trustworthy at all, and there are dangerous chemicals in them. At the impact, it all explodes. Frank and Sarah run to the wreck, but all help is too late.

HAH! THAT WAS DESERVED, BITCH!

SARAH!

What? My leg was broken in four places thanks to her. I think death penalty is justified. Look, her purse has been ejected.

Indeed…

Sarah, that is the mobile phone, still intact. Let´s see who called her last. I am dialing the number now.

YULIA! What is it now? Have you escaped in time? Hello? HELLO? DAMN BUTT CALLS!

Sarah, GUESS WHOSE VOICE THAT WAS! NOW SCHNEIDER WILL HAVE TO REACT!

In the evening, Golo Grauss steps to his car and wants to drive home as usually, but is arrested by Frank and Bernd Schneider in the undercover car, while Holtmann and Kaportke block the other side. With all of this proof, Harry is relieved of the accusations and rehabilitated.

A week after, Frank and Sarah marry on the graveyard. This weird descision by the couple was made to marry in the presence of Rainer Sordel, who was not only a great partner for Frank, but sacrificed his own life for Sarah. They said “yes” right in front of Rainers grave.

Soon after, Harry and Bernd Schneider have a discussion in the office.

So, I guess my career is over anyway.

Yes. I mean, you violated the protocol on a daily basis, and that story… now that you have been addicted to gambling, it is hard to trust you. Even if I do, since you did NOT become corrupt and have chosen the right thing to do… there is always something remaining.

I wanted to join my brother in Gasmea anyway and help him with his business.

With what income? I thought being a police officer is what you want. How about a nice recommendation letter to the Gasmean Highway Patrol? What town was your brother in?

Crafton.

You do not have to quit here, but if you want… I could arrange something.

Some days later, Frank is the next in Schneiders office.

YOU SHOULD BE CONVICTED TO MARTIAL LAW! What you did was the most reckless thing I ever saw. On the other hand…

Yes? What?

I criticized your leadership abilities, and you managed to get the whole department behind you to perform a keen plan, and all that behind my back without me noticing.

Well, you could write me a recommendation letter as well.

I passed foward a recommendation to the staff council, proposing to turn Frank Batimus from Oberkommissar to Hauptkommissar. BUT I AM STILL PISSED! YOU ARE SUSPENDED FOR TWO WEEKS! Now close my door from the outside. And if you have no idea what to do with the free time, there is someone in need of a ride to Crafton…

Damn, Gasmea is really huge. When are we there?

Possibly tomorrow noon… Sarah, go to sleep, the next driver change is with you.

And indeed, they bring Harry to his brother´s place, a run-down gas station, and then to the department where he is reporting for duty.

I can´t believe they made you a Lieutenant.

Well, Schneider seems to have been fond of me, despite telling the opposite all the time.

I guess he just wanted to make sure they take you and he is really getting rid of you.

Or that, Frank! By the way, my new ride. A Fowler Buckshot. How is that compared to those boring Primus?

Well, as future HAUPTkommissar… I might have the possibility for an acquired taste and a special order.

We had a hell of a run, partner.

Yep, Harry, but the last three years with you were the hardest! How long has Schneider given you to do the escort service for me?

Two weeks.

We will drive home in one, Harry. YOU SNORE!
