I am responsible for the name. Mat and I work closely together, each doing about half the car, but I maintain PMC while he maintains Warren. The PMC Fossa is named for a big cat.

Your grammar is remarkable.
I think the fossa is adorable like the musk deer, the okapi or the yeti crab. Then there’s animals that just look striking like the shoe bill, Glaucus Atlanticus, or the blue parrotfish. If you want something to overreact to check out the pacu fish, the goblin shark, or a blob fish.

CSR138 Part 3

Tier 3 Mechanic’s Rejection bins, part 1

Random garage in Germany
10am

“I see you,” exclaimed the man in a distinctively Czech accent, as he spotted the burgundy Sendo reverse into the parking lot of his garage, which, aside from a few customer’s cars, was mostly cleared to accommodate the assortment of SUVs and wagons Michael requested on the behalf of MI6.

After Shock had maneuvered the big sedan into the crowded space, he and Vince Whiteley, the longtime Velocity host, proceeded to greet Thomas, the mechanic that was at the entrance.

“I heard that you are looking to buy a new car for your family,” stated the mechanic.

“Yes,” explained Shock, trying his best to hide the actual underlying mission. “It’s quite the eclectic collection I suppose, most of them will be considered some of thee earliest modern crossovers that I expect to become popular in no time. Guess they’re the new hip status symbol.”

“When I was little, SUVs were actually useful,” lamented Vince, before Thomas proceeded to cut him off.

“Anyways, let’s get to it,” as the three of them enter the garage to see two of the candidates already perched on the lifts inside.

Vince opens the hood of the Schnell, and proceeds to slam the driver’s door shut

Schnell D4

@interior

Hmm…it has a cheap feeling to it, and it’s a bit rowdy. But I do enjoy a wagon. A 166hp 2.3L inline 4 for this vehicle does seem somewhat underpowered for what it is. But it is cheap! Why is it cheap? Steel Panels is why! Tires also seem narrow as they are 205/60R17s. Design wise, pure blandness. For the most part, it is clean for what it is. At least the interior seemed reasonable for the price range.

“I would need to test out the performance myself, but I don’t think I need to, cause I do not think that it will hold up to the harsh environment, or my harsh driving I suppose for that matter.”

The Schnell gets a Tier 3 Mechanic’s Rejection for steel panels.

(Note: Had the least powerful engine in the whole competition)

Vincent squirms at the peculiar damage on the Fraser’s windshield. Vince comments that someone tried to throw a rock at the driver as it was being driven here. Both are left very much confused.

“Look, I’m not saying the car is that ugly… it’s just, they throw rocks at the windshield while it is in dealersip. They really do not want them out there. Also, the rear lights do not work…call it a feature.”

Typical Thomas sarcasm…

Fraser MPV

@pentiumbased

This looks like one of those cars that can keep a low profile. Also it’s so low profile that it’s just as slow, slower than the Schnell D4. But looking at it, everything feels in place, although the rear diffuser does make a non sporty entry look sporty when it isn’t. Engineering side of things, it’s what you may expect from an 3 liter naturally aspirated v6. The power is very much at redline given the nature of tuning a DOHC, and honestly doesn’t seem very usable. Oh, and it has VVL and VVT on both cams. For the chassis, we once again find a tire width that we don’t usually see on the roads, a narrow 210. What? Also, that’s an interesting engine cover, could see how trips to the auto parts store will turn out.

“This engine doesn’t bring the right impression, and the differential seems pretty suboptimal. Doesn’t seem to have what I want too, especially with the tires.”

The Fraser gets a Tier 3 Mechanic’s Rejection for the commercially unavailable tire sizes.

Vince raises the Arion on the lift, commenting on the 4-wheel double wishbone suspension layout.

Arion Polaris 4.5I

@Aruna

As advertised, the suspension seems lifted straight from an executive sedan. Styling is very much what you expect from an SUV in this time period. Clean with a nice two-tone. Engineering wise, the engine doesn’t put out a lot of power but as a 5.0L, 2 valve per cylinder, DAOHC V8 with a focus on quietness, efficiency and reliability, I’m not really surprised. Looking at the other stats, the wheels are good, the brakes are good, we have Air Ride Suspension, fancy…but somewhat reasonable. Overall, it gets my approval. Certified Noice!

“I’ll have to think about this; it’s a great car, but I don’t think the drivetrain is suitable for the job. The engine honestly seems very underwhelming.”

Vena gives the Cabrera a good shove down on the rear, which sags unusually.

Cabrera Aneto

@Petakabras

The front and yellow color give off the impression of a modern sport compact. Nice little plastic mud guards and splitters for that two-tone detail. Looks are otherwise pretty standard around. On the mechanical side of things. The engine appears okay, using an all cast rotating assembly, but is naturally aspirated. It is kind of low on power but it’s not unreasonable in performance. The suspension seems way too soft for one which impacts ride frequency and definitely hinders load capacity. Also, the interior seems out of place here. And once again, the wheels are very narrow at 195mm, but at least they are squared. Just be sure when you drive this car, that your passenger takes his motion sickness medicine. This one is basically a hit, but a flyball and out at center.

“I’ll probably need a tour of that interior, and it doesn’t seem to have the features I want either. The suspension doesn’t seem very reassuring.”

sussy baka

FM HiWay GT-X-Trail

@Jaimz

Hmm… a rallycar approach which is interesting. Blind those who are in the way in front of you I guess. It’s even got a rallycar suspension by the looks of it. Design wise, the front of a rally car, bare sides and an okay rear. Now whats under the bonnet is a flat 6 twin turbo. It even has a low RPM limit when there is still plenty of room to rev that engine longer. However what is interesting is that everything for this turbo engine is the rotation assembly is all cast parts, including the pistons. I guess. This engine is also producing so much boost… like some aftermarket tuning or rallycar boost. Like 15psi of boost… and you have a cast pistons putting up with it. Tires are square, large amounts of sidewall but narrow at 195mm… Mechanical wise, I would skip this one.

“Honestly, the engine is enough to sideline this one. All this boost, yet BMW engines of the same displacement and number of cylinders make more torque at lower RPMs, while having more power, albeit higher up in the rev range. Hell, I can list a few 4 cylinders that do better. Wasn’t worth it for FM, cause they have a terrible reputation for reliability.”

The FM gets a Tier 3 Mechanic’s Rejection for uh probably some of the worst turbo tuning we’ve ever seen.

TiffosĂŹ Cara X4R

@fasmukji

There is a lot of plastic here. Not that it’s a bad thing, but this car is straight up naked steel panels with paint on it. Which makes it prone to rust. The engine is probably the highest performing so far as of writing this. The turbo however is a little large to be honest. This turbo would be more for the aftermarket side of things, and with its larger size, it doesn’t spool until after 3300rpm, making it a bit laggy. Also, it makes peak power close to redline. The use of any active suspension besides air, which is more common, may be a bit too advanced for this time period. A swing and a miss.

“A miss indeed. Aside from the engine, the interior layout is not right for the job, and they seem to be a pain to maintain and repair if something acts up. It won’t hold up, literally. I guess that’s the price of trying to shove every exotic-sounding technology you can think of in a pretty small package. Hell, I still didn’t even get the features I wanted.”

The Tiffosi gets a Tier 3 Mechanic’s Rejection for steel panels, unreasonably high trim service costs, and suspension was was considered too advanced and unreliable (Active Comfort).

(Note: second-highest trim SVC of the comp)

Hayaku Seiko 2300 All-Terrain LTD

@Hilbert

Oh my oh my… where do we start. The color combination hurts my eyes. Let’s dig into the engineering side of things. Your engine for the most part, is okay, I didn’t see any faults with it. Also these are some very narrow tires. Electric power steering, but with just ABS. I think EPS is at it’s infancy right now, so I can’t really say much about this. Well, on the plus side of things, this does get great gas mileage. The engine is probably the nicest thing about this car.

“I honestly don’t have a good feeling about this, it merely seems like a jacked-up version of an economy commuter. But I think it’ll be a disservice if I didn’t look in this for now.”

(Note: had the second highest fuel economy in this competition)

Matsuma 4-Cross GTf

@mart1n2005

Although this is a new model that we haven’t been very acquainted with, I honestly don’t see much wrong with this. The engine tuning is very mild but is reasonable for what it is. This is basically a wagon trying to be an MPV by the looks of it. On initial inspection, it seems to have all the desirable features. Good job on the front and rear, that rear plastic cover on the side could use a little more work to blend in.

“It has all the features I want, but the engine is the definite low point of this car.”

Vince peeks under the engine of the Matsuhashi and surveys the general underpinnings with his flashlight.

Matsuhashi Pendejo EvoluciĂłn

@Elven_Sage

Under the hood is where you’re going to be finding yourself often being it has really low reliability. All cast internals with a turbo, although the tuning is reasonably good with a decent power band. Forged pistons would be much appreciated. Also, this is yet another rust bucket, with staggered 20" wheels on an AWD with a Solid Rear Axle. The use of Sport Interior is umm…yeah. The design itself is decent, to say the least. With a reputation for low reliability and questionable engineering, this is not a solid choice. This thing has a big identity crisis and it doesn’t seem to handle it well.

“This likes to advertise itself as a sports SUV. On some areas, it’s right, but it doesn’t really come close to meeting my expectations.”

The Matsuhashi gets a Tier 3 Mechanic’s Rejection for steel panels, impractically large rims, extremely high service costs, and unusually low engine reliability.

(Note: had the lowest engine reliability and third highest trim SVC of the whole competition)

Vince pops open the hood of the Wells.

Wells X1-Chase

@DuceTheTruth100

This is visually and mechanically, an abomination… some type of futuristic vehicle, but a bad approach as one. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS??? It uses a single port EFi system, which is ancient by this point. It revs so short… turbo kicks in so late that you only get around 1600 rpm of usable powerband. Using a journal bearing turbo, you have forged conrods and crank, but HEC pistons, on a turbo… burning so rich, that it’s not burning efficiently… and that is the engine… chassis, what were you even thinking. Solid disc brakes all around, super wide staggered tires, a sequential racing gearbox with automatic lockers, a cheapskate interior with no infotainment system, and outright terrible suspension tuning. The more I look at this thing both visually and mechanically, the worse it gets. I can’t even. Now if you excuse me, I have an early appointment with my good friend Jack Daniels.

“ugh…seems like a terrible concept car. Anyways, sure thing, it’s pretty close to lunchtime anyways. Lunch is on me I suppose. Which place do you want to go?”

The Wells gets a Tier 3 Mechanic’s Rejection for possibly being the worst engineered entry in this competition.

(Note: Worst comfort in the whole competition by an inhumanely wide margin)

“I wonder what the eggheads at MI6 were thinking giving me that list…”

Vena gives Shock a glare.

“What? I meant my family!”

A Humvee paces erratically outside the shop.
