CSR166 - Legends (Enhanced)

2025

What is the reason for working your hours, days, years away at a job, watching the numbers go up bit by bit as you tirelessly slave away most of your life? If it is to survive, one can simply go off the grid, live off the planet with the bare minimum. And some are content with that. But for others of us, its for dreams, goals, ideas ingrained into our very core desires from a young age. Something to work towards, build for, that final step of ‘making it’. And while there were other goals and dreams met along the way, those were more attainable. More useful. More responsible. More ‘grown up’.

With car enthusiasts, the majority of us would say we have a dream car. The one on the bedroom poster. The one in the video game that for whatever reason captured our heart. The one that passed by on the street and burned itself into memory. The toy car that was randomly chosen for you and became an attachment. The one in the movie or show that just looked so damn cool especially under rose tinted glasses.

For Stefán, he could now say he had comfortably reached the stage where he could feasibly get that ‘dream car’. However, years of casually discussing cars, buying ‘attainable’ dream cars, looking them up and seeing them in reviews as he indulged in his interest has also given him a curse. A curse of knowledge. That old cars, the ones he had in his childhood dreams, were flawed and often met with shortcomings in this modern age. Sure, those flaws helped shape their story, their heritage and image, but it was a case of never meeting your heroes. Or at the very least, there was a need to hamper your expectations.

Fortunately for Stefán however, there was people out there with the mechanical knowhow, with dreams just like he had of the cars he desired. Those who understood that their heroes were flawed, but also had the power to make them into the hero we always pictured or even better. That you can in fact meet your hero and enjoy every moment with them.

It just was going to cost a lot.

Short Summary:

Stefán wants a professionally restomodded classic performance car, built off a platform with significance.

The Brief

The client Stefán, is a man who had grown his wealth and has much of his life goals met. He was very much a man of stealth wealth, putting quality and craftsmanship over flashiness and needless gimmicks. His every day needs are met, and thus, the only goal for you here is to fulfill his fantasy of ‘automotive perfection’. A car that is is the one.

As there is many different dreams and fantasies one could take, the broad stoke of it is that he is looking for a specially crafted, restored and rebuilt performance car that could feasibly be used everyday - one that isn’t about showing off with big numbers, big wings and how fast it is, but rather about how how well its constructed and perfected. One with a distinct character and built for the pleasure of driving. And preferably, this car should have the history to for there to have had a connection to form.

While budget is not a concern for him, there is always other factors that are a priority…

The Priorities

:star: :star: :star:

Historical Significance

The reason to care about the vehicle in the first place. This can be anything, from motorsports pedigree to cult status and followings to just simple popularity - or infamy. The important thing is that there should be a reason to care about the car and what it is, and most importantly - why its desired.

[Lore - including its glories, failings and reasons for the changes made is recommended. If you need to justify some design decisions, feel free to put them here as well. Original car is not required for submission]

Style and Design Choices

There’s many ways to go about restomodding a classic, Stefán wants the car to not only be visually stunning, but also feel right. The car must look like a classic, but modernized elements and details can also give it that extra bit of flavour that didn’t exist before. However, it isn’t just about what it looks like, but how its operated should make fit with that exterior as well. The car should be updated to keep up with the times or even improved to what it could have been, but not to a point where its simply a new car overloaded with big screens and new technology that dulls and takes away from the characteristics and experience of a classic. Conversely, there is also a reason he isn’t just buying a classic and keeping it all original, there is a balance here.

[Visuals, Component and Part choices (If convertible, convertible type will be included here). I will not judge interiors unless every entry in a given round has them]

:star: :star:

Vehicle Dynamics and Engagement

If the car didn’t drive well, what’s the point? He has the money to buy a shell and get a designer to spruce it up so it’ll look nice if he wanted it to be a lawn decoration. Sure, this isn’t expected to be THE daily driver that Stefán has, but its also certainly not going to be a garage queen. If Stefán is going to spend the money for it, it better drive and ride as well as it looks. Stefán also intends to use it primarily on the street with only minor track use.

[Drivability, Sportiness, Comfort, Engine Smoothness / Response, General Tuning, Practicality to a minor extent. Performance figures will only matter to an extent. Convertibles will receive a 1.05x multiplier to stats in this category]

Build Quality and Cost

Stefán is willing to put out the fat stacks for a very high quality product - if he wanted something that was only okay, he wouldn’t be going to a professional outfit and instead would just buy the base car himself so that it can be a project stuck in the garage till his time on this planet is over. The vehicle should be built well, reliable, and finely tuned. At the same time, it should be worth it - just because the budget isn’t limited doesn’t mean the costs can’t go out of control and reach far into depreciating returns. Where is that limit? Stefán will see how all of the competition stacks up.

[Quality use, Reliability, Safety, Price (minor) - relative to competition, Service Costs (minor) - relative to competition, Fuel Economy (minor) - relative to competition]

:star:

Build Time to Delivery

Stefán understands that a quality product takes time to be built, especially a bespoke creation like the one he is looking for. But every project needs to be delivered eventually, even if he is willing to wait a couple of years.

[Build time in months will be calculated as:

((Engine Engineering Time /2) + (Vehicle Engineering Time) ) / 20
]

Quirks

There’s always that one thing - that one special thing that made a car weird, interesting, or remarkable that could just tilt the decision over.

[Something unique about the car, rather if it’s from the base car or something the shop has done. Don’t go overboard however, if it is to the detriment to the priorities above it might not be worth it!]

Lore

  • Due to the nature of Automation, I do not know the lore of the vehicle you have built nor where to find it. As such, you must provide historic context and lore of your vehicle otherwise it would be assumed to be “just another random kit car” and mark it as out of scope. It does not need to be an essay, just enough to get an idea of what makes the car is and why it is desirable.

Cars that are out of scope will be binned under reasoning of being out of scope. Please ask if clarification is needed.

Final Notes and Changelog

This CSR Round I am aiming for a slightly different approach, with a bit of inspiration from CSR 163 in prioritizing the reasons - that being the story and lore - a car could have to be desirable rather than the usual of what is best at a given price point. Just with a much more expensive twist - one that aims for a price point that exceeds any other round in recent memory. Hope you have fun building for this!

Changelog:

4/30: Posted

5/1: Extended year range to 1950s, fixed typos.

5/2: Specified multipliers of stats for convertibles.

Does this also apply to the “donor car” (i.e., the base model for the restomod) in addition to the actual submission?

Donor car can technically be whatever you like, it is not required for submission

The $30M techpool budget is quite modest, but it should be enough to preserve a level playing field between the entries based on older cars and those derived from newer ones.

But what about body unlock years? Should there be any upper (newer) and lower (older) limits for those?

Anything you can feasibly use that isn’t excluded in the rules already (including through Techpool unlocks) and looks like a like a car between 1970 and 1990 is fine. I’m keeping it fairly open so you can technically enter almost anything as long as it fits on theme with the brief, but I will say I did add the part about binning cars that are out of scope for a reason.

Correction: Premium Unleaded is 95 RON; Super Unleaded is 98 RON.

In any case, unlike ARM, we are not required to clone our base model cars using the “clone all” button.

Any reason why the year window is quite narrow at 1970-1990? There are a lot of restomodded cars from the 50s or 60s as well I think.

If I want to make a normally Front engine car mid engine for example like the Renault Clio V6 RS, but there aren’t any good mid engine bodies, am I allowed to craft a 3D hatchback body in this case on a mid engine platform or use a front engine platform with front engine engineering (or rear engine) and model a 3D engine in the middle?

Main reason were that initially I was as trying some chassis techpool things before scrapping it. Plus basically all the cars I had fell in that range so didn’t expand it before posting - so I am open to opening up the range to 1950s.

That is not a problem - just specify in the ad why it’s like that. Delta S4, 205 T16 and Renault 5 Turbo did exist then afterall.

Extending the model year range to cover cars from as late as 2000 may also make sense, given the fact that even the last cars to be produced during the 1990s are now more than 25 years old, and hence may still turn out to be good candidates for restomodding.

I’ll have to put my foot down at 1990 - even if there’s a couple options from the era IRL the aesthetic by the 2000 is a bit too modern and much of those that aren’t, are already covered by a plausible 1990 model year introduction.

I may be biased by having more experience with cars technologically closer to the 90s than new, but I feel like this would be too little of a difference to warrant a restomod that still retains any of the non-modern character.

I can accept that, and besides, it should be possible to make a viable entry with a base model year of 1990 anyway (which is something I’m considering).

How much of a “restomod” or update is reasonable here? if i were to change the body through 3D and making half the body transparent this wouldn’t be penalised under you engineering time rules but i would imagine it’d be too far?

should they be purely in the realms of improving on the orginal? Something like the Eagle E-type, Singer 911

Under the context of the challenge I am looking for an improved version, not a car that is completely different. So I recommend that it should look recognizably like the original, or if you don’t want to make an original first, implied in lore to look like the original car with changes. How far you go with the changes is up to you still - there are definitely more wild ones and more tame ones in the inspirations alone.

Generally a good starting point is The headlights, tailights, wheels, etc. Details that are easy to replace. Painting and/or or replacing bumpers and removing chrome can also do a lot to modernize the design. Here are some examples I found of restomods. (First image of each car is Stock.)

1965 Pontiac GTO

1st Gen Mustang

In the end, how, and how much, you change the design is up to personal preference, but I hope these examples give you a half decent starting point.

As another example, I’ll show my ARM33 entry as a reference point:

I won’t be entering this, but compared to the donor car, the aesthetic differences are quite subtle, though noticeable: all of the lights are now LED units, and a discreet aero kit has been added, along with some fender flares to accommodate wider tires and wheels.
