there were quite a few discussions about this with some good ideas, and the question is still open AFAIK
as 2d decals this should be relatively easy to implement.
that is a good idea. i bet the devs will implement sometime
Maaaybe, but it actually is quite a bit more complex than it sounds, because of the work required to make it stamp nicely onto the car
would that really be difficult? im thinking about something really simple and 2D like the porsche logo:

you would only need to create a series of flat fixtures with a few different shapes (round, oval, square and rectangle), the texture of which would be “emtpy”.
the decal texture could then be specified when you begin a game and set up your car company, like in other games where you can use your own decals.
most tycoon style games really suffer from terrible generic logos supplied with the games.
i think that would be a small but nevertheless very effective feature to individualize our car companys,
especially since manufacturer logos are rather important for real car brands.
the logos could also be used to appear in other parts of the game (marketing, dealerships, outside your factory etc.)
even more awesome would be a kind of dynamic lettering fixture, where you can enter your car’s name or specification and a fixture is created which you can put on the back of your cars.
but i fear that one would be really a bit more difficult to put into the game.
cheers,
stonelouse
It’s hard to explain why it’s quite difficult, but there is a fairly specific mesh structure required to ensure it correctly bends around the car, and it often takes a fair bit of manual tweaking to ensure each badge behaves properly, as well as some designs of badge that aren’t workable. Trust me when i say it’s quite a technical challenge to make a badge designer that works properly.
this thread lead me to an idea - user chooses a basic shape made in 3d with all the bells and whistles, and then adds little touches inside of it
that should work imho
As in just making texture changes but not changing the 3d object? That MAY be possible, we’ll see about that.
But please do understand that a lot of things that from the outside seem very easy to impliment often have huge technical challenges that you wouldn’t think of.
Also, please do understand that getting the game finished has somewhat higher priority than making custom badges currently this would not be time well spent, it might be at some time in the (far) future.

exactly, still counts as a custom badge in my opinion and won’t be a massive nightmare like user drawn 3d objects
Could bump maps possibly help to get a slight 3D effect with less effort than physically 3D modelling stuff? I have very little idea how easy or hard bump mapping is, but I figure it might be possible to have one or two fonts made by the devs with bump mapping so we can have a bit of a raised effect for the lettering at the back of the car. Also, if a few generic shapes that we could draw on were bump mapped then it might be able to give the impression of a raised badge without the difficulty of 3D modelling.
As I say, I have no idea how practical or difficult the idea is, but I’ve seen the effects of bump mapping (or, more specifically, normal mapping) and thought it might be an alternative
thats just what i said.

Why not making prismatic shapes, cilinders, triangles, squares, etc…? Set the height of the prisms to fix value that works everywhere. Make templates of the top texture of the prisms.
People mod the top texture to their liking. Since the only thing changing is the colour of the pixels nothing should go wrong…
For starters, then if it works integrate it ingame with a tool to upload or even edit.
Actually I believe that this is a core feature to the tycoon part. A tycoon game where you create a brand but cant brand anything…
Ofcourse they do know that, and this is seriously considered when polishing the game up after the main tycoon part has been build. So hold on tight!
