Engine dimensions

I’ve noticed that since the update, various challenges have now engine dimention requirements.

What I would sugges is that during creation of the bottom end, the increase and decrease in engine size, you display the actual dimensions of the engine, because now we have to go to the tester each time to
see the changes in size. Wich I think is very irritating :wink:

This would be only remotely useful until the engine if complete as the size of the block itself doesn’t tell the full story.
In the case of a “full engine” sitting on the testing stand: pretty good idea! Could go into the semi-transparent info-bar.

A separate slider for block size would be awesome. Enabling one engine to be designed, bore and stroke to be changed in revisions without changing the size of the block, for example GM V8 engines.

Yes. The LS series engine can be from under 350cui (5.7l) up to over 454cui (7.4l), without changing the outer dimensions.

The v6 engine GM has in Opel (2.8l) is the same they have in Cadillac (3.6l), and the max size is said to be 4.0l.

Sorry to necro, but I actually had an idea based on this. What if we had an extra tab on the side of the bore slider that set the max bore, with the main slider being the minimum bore? For example, if I want to make an engine group that scales from 3.25" to 4" I’d set the “max bore” tab at 4" and the block size in game would scale up to that, but not below the minimum bore size on the main tab. Not sure if you thought about it, or that train left the station when the new math arrived.

Really? So basically no using of the exact same block. Thats not good for immersion and there might also be some serious gameplay consequenses when trying to fit 2.3 litre engine to your hot hatch, since that 2.3 engine will always be bigger than the 2.0 litre engine.

Yes, that now is a locked-down gameplay mechanic and won’t be changed in future releases. The value/effort ratio and the gameplay/complexity ratio for such a feature are deemed to be too low to make it happen. You gotta stop adding features at some point, and that point has passed a while ago.

Won’t always be bigger, as you can increase the stroke a fair bit without making the block bigger (which is part of the reason most normal engines aren’t super huge bore, makes the block pretty bloody large!) plus the increase in total engine size from 2.0 to 2.3 if done by bore alone would still be fairly minimal.

It’s not perfect, but sometimes compromises have to be made in the interests of simplicity/actually getting the game done. This is one of those.

in real life increasing stroke makes the engine much taller, so the engine does become larger and most cars will fit a larger bore engine easier than a longer stroke one. in automation ,engine size only increases in relation to bore for simplification purposes, although mass does increase with stroke.

Hence why it limits the range of stroke you’re allowed within the same bore, its assumed that’s how much more stroke you can fit in the same engine height.

I’d rather have a good game than an accurate game; if the scalable bore spacing had to be sacrificed for the greater good, I’m willing to loan it my redshirt.

Yeah, we rarely sacrifice realism, but occasionally its needed either to make it simple enough to make (like not doing V angle) or for gameplay considerations.

Was going to suggest keeping the engine height the same inside that bore stroke ratio, and making it taller if its outside that ratio. Don’t even worrying about scaling the art up for it. But you sound pretty set about it and its not a major concern to me in particular.

Yeah, we’re 100% against making changes to the size of things that you can’t see. As when you place it in the car you’ll be confused when it looks like it fits perfectly but doesn’t because its “fake tall” :stuck_out_tongue:
