Ernstland Motoring History Challenge (ALT HISTORY, ROUND 1)

Willkommen im Nördlichen Königreich Ernst.

Round 1.

The effect of two large wars back-to-back shows on the landscape and the people of the NKE. Rubble and ruin litter the streets, and people who once lived affluently are now forced below the poverty line. Whilst the common man struggles to earn a living for himself, the richest within the country, those who have not fled at the least, party nightly, drinking heavily and spending their large store of gold on expensive cars, women and booze. Meanwhile, what remains of the military and government are investing heavily into the rebuilding of the nation, purchasing large quantities of trucks to help move rubble, transport the displaced and move raw materials to where they're needed. Unlike their southern neighbours, the NKE was not split down the middle, though influence from both Western and Soviet troops weigh heavily on the minds of the people. The city of Berlin has suffered most from this military influence- Soviet soldiers guard the eastern parts of the city, and construction of a wall has begun to divide Berlin in two. The west side will be controlled by the NKE, and the then-presiding Queen Annette, whilst the east side remains oppressed by Communist rule.

Most work in factories or farms, oftentimes driving the aforementioned trucks to help rebuild said factories and get the NKE’s production lines running again. Food is scarce, most eat-homegrown, and the need for transport is rising rapidly. Many families have motorcycles, or even pedal-bikes, but when the nearest open school or factory is more often than not multiple towns over, that’s just simply not practical for the average family. The want, the need for a car has grown rapidly in the months since April, and the NKE government are more than happy to deliver. Free trade markets with foreign nations have been opened, with the hope that the country can import enough cars to get it’s people up and moving, to get cities clear and rebuilt, to build highway networks and roadways. Cars will oftentimes be taken into NKE factories, disassembled and then reassembled to give the workers the key experience needed to jump-start a brand new car industry.

The 1% of the country want something more than just transport though. They want luxury, speed, something that will show the rest of the world that whilst their country is poverty-stricken, they are not. They don’t care how much it costs, just as long as it’s flashy and will put those who work the land in their place, or so they say. Whilst most common folk have experience in repairing or replacing mechanical components, likely as a result of wartime field or factory work, the rich do not. As long as it goes fast, and looks and sounds great whilst it does it, they’ll buy it.

The government and the military need something utilitarian, capable of hauling heavy loads across miles and miles of often bombed-out of unpaved roads. Something easy to maintain and that doesn’t guzzle fuel is ideal, and engines such as I6s are preferred due to the excess of spare tank engines. Whilst the need for a large full-sized truck is desperate, the need for a smaller type of truck is also prevelant. Something that isn’t quite as large, less capable of hauling huge loads but much easier to handle in the city or a village, something smaller and more economical, cheaper to buy and cheaper to build.

Summary and Rules

General Design Rules and Regs.

  • If doing an interior, it must be LHD.
  • Headlights: one pair required situated on the front corner area of the vehicle, mirrored symmetrically from the centre line; two pair (dual) on the corner area and/or a single third centre headlight are allowed. Cover glass shall be white or light yellow.
  • Tail lights: one pair required situated on the rear corner area of the vehicle mirrored symmetrically from the centre line. Cover glass shall be red.
  • Brake light: one pair situated on the rear corner area of the vehicle, mirrored symmetrically from the centre line, and/or one single light situated in the rear centre area of the vehicle required. Cover glass shall be red. Tail and brake lights may be housed in the same fitting.
  • Turn signals: both left and right signals must be visible when looking directly at the front and rear of the car. Pairs of signals can be mounted on the front and rear corner area of the car, and/or side-mounted; must be mirrored symmetrically from the car’s centre line. Light-based turn signals must be orange on the front and side and rear. Exceptions may be made for US-imported cars. Semaphore-style indicators are allowed.
  • Reverse light(s) not required.
  • Mirrors are not required.
  • External gas cap not required - could be hidden in lights or other fixtures.
  • At least one windshield wiper required that reaches in front of the driver’s vision.
  • One Unscaled Euro-style license plate required and must be visible when looking directly at the front and rear of the car.

Market 1: Budget Consumer Car.

A car that's cheap to buy, cheap to maintain and exceptionally practical. Most people aren't too fussed about looks, provided of course that it doesn't look too ungainly.

Key Stats:

  • Approximate cost. Most don’t have a lot of money to buy a car, and finding a balance of cheapness to quality is key.

  • Service cost/Reliability. Additionally, whilst most in the NKE have some experience dealing with mechanical issues, not everything can be fixed by the everyman. Those issues that are too complex and need a mechanic to mend shouldn’t be too expensive.

  • Fuel economy. Whilst fuel isn’t massively expensive, nobody wants to have to fill the tank after just 1 trip.

  • Practicality. Most NKE families consist of 2 parents and 2-3 children. Many people have dogs. Trying to cram everyone into a car the size of Luxembourg would be a chore and unacceptable to the average person.

Rules (Market 1)

  • Model, Trim, Family and Variant year must be set from 1946 to 1948. Lorewise your car can be built earlier than this, but the above rule applies regardless.

  • Techpool total costs must be 5 million or less, for both Car and Engine techpool.

  • Realistic design choices must be used. If not, provide a good reason as for why or you will be asked to resubmit.

  • Engines must have at least 1 muffler.

  • Fuel availability is either Leaded 92 RON or Unleaded 85 RON. Rural areas tend to have poorer fuel quality. NO FAUX DIESELS!!!

  • No race parts.

  • Whilst there are no regulations surrounding loudness, most people don’t want to drive around in a clattering shitbox.

  • 4x4 should not be used.

  • 3 speed manuals only.

  • Tyres must be Cross-Ply Hard Long Life, and should have a profile of 100. Anything more than 95/105 is not allowed.

  • Interiors should have at least 5 seats, though a 2/2 or 2 +3 arrangement may be allowed if it can be justified. Radios are preferrable, though if in 1946 they will cost techpool points.

  • At least Standard 40’s safety.

  • Total car cost of $11000 or less. Anything more will incur a resub, and I advise you not to tow the line and submit something that costs $10999.

  • Submissions must be named as followed: EMHC1(1) - for the Model and EMHC1(1) - for the Engine Family. Trim and Variant are free.

Market 2: Luxury/Supercar.

A car that's as fast and a flashy as it's pricetag suggests. Fuel economy, service costs and the like are not a priority here.

Key Stats:

  • Prestige. If it’s not prestigious, what’s the point? It should look and feel expensive.

  • Sportiness. Speed is king- especially when you’re trying to show off to your rich friends.

  • Comfort. After you’ve forked out so much for this car, it should at the least be comfortable.

  • Styling. As said earlier, it should look expensive. People should be able to tell what it is and how much it costs from a glance.

Rules (Market 2)

  • Model, Trim, Family and Variant year must be set from 1946 to 1948. Lorewise your car can be built earlier than this, but the above rule applies regardless.

  • Techpool total costs must be 8 million or less, for both Car and Engine techpool.

  • 4 speed manuals are allowed for cars on the sportier end of the spectrum. Otherwise, a big luxury boat might be better suited to a 3 speed manual or even an automatic.

  • Tyres must be Cross-Ply Medium Compound (or Sports Compound if it’s unlocked.), and should have a profile of 100. Anything more than 95/105 is not allowed.

  • Interiors should have at least 2 seats, and a radio is required.

  • At least Standard 40’s safety.

  • Total car cost of $60000 or less.

  • Submissions must be named as followed: EMHC1(2) - for the Model and EMHC1(2) - for the Engine Family. Trim and Variant are free.

Market 3: Utility Pickup Truck/Van

A small to mid-sized van or pickup truck. Cheap and utility-focused, with decent offroad, drivability and fuel economy. The vehicle shouldn't be hugely uncomfortable, but it shouldn't be a massive priority.

Key Stats:

  • Utility/Cargo Volume. The vehicle should be able to easily carry loads, without this it’s useless as a van/pickup.

  • Drivability. A driver spinning out whilst trying to wrestle control from the car would be highly detrimental, losing a lot of material and potentially the car and driver themselves.

  • Economy/Service costs. Whilst fuel and repairs will be covered by the government it shouldn’t cost half the country’s GDP to fill the tank or fix an oil pump.

  • Reliability. The car should be on the road more than it is off it. There’s no point in trying to rebuild the country if you spend more time rebuilding the car than driving it.

Rules (Market 3)

  • Model, Trim, Family and Variant year must be set from 1946 to 1948. Lorewise your car can be built earlier than this, but the above rule applies regardless.

  • Techpool total costs must be 4 million or less, for both Car and Engine techpool.

  • 3 speed manuals only. Diff lock is allowed.

  • 4x4 is optional.

  • Tyres must be Cross-Ply Utility.

  • Depending on cab size the vehicle can have either a pair of front seats or a bench seat. If it’s a double cab you can have up to 2 rows of 3.

  • At least Standard 40’s safety.

  • Total car cost of $16000 or less.

  • Submissions must be named as followed: EMHC1(3) - for the Model and EMHC1(3) - for the Engine Family. Trim and Variant are free.

Market 4: Full-sized Truck/Lorry

A large lorry/truck capable of carrying the largest loads required, or transporting troops/displaced for the military. Inline 6 engines are preferred, but other options can be explored.

Key Stats:

  • Utility/Cargo Volume. The vehicle should be able to easily carry loads, without this it’s useless as a van/pickup.

  • Offroad. This truck will be needed to reach remote areas, and if it gets stopped by the slightest sign of mud it would simply be useless.

  • SIZE!!!. This is supposed to be a full-sized truck/lorry, not an Austin Mini with a box on the back. Bigger isn’t always better, but in this case it is.

  • Comfort. Whilst the truck shouldn’t be a Rolls Royce, the people being transported or driving the truck would appreciate not having a broken back by the time they arrive at their destination.

Rules (Market 4)

  • Model, Trim, Family and Variant year must be set from 1946 to 1948. Lorewise your car can be built earlier than this, but the above rule applies regardless.

  • Techpool total costs must be 6 million or less, for both Car and Engine techpool.

  • Realistic design choices must be used. If not, provide a good reason as for why or you will be asked to resubmit.

  • No mufflers required.

  • Fuel availability is either Leaded 92 RON or Unleaded 85 RON. Rural areas tend to have poorer fuel quality. NO FAUX DIESELS!!!

  • No race parts.

  • Diff lock is recommended. No gearbox restrictions.

  • 4x4 is recommended, though if your truck has 6 wheels RWD can be used as a 4x6 configuration.

  • Tyres must be Cross-Ply All-Terrain.

  • Depending on cab size the vehicle can have either a pair of front seats or a bench seat. If it’s a double cab you can have up to 2 rows of 3.

  • At least Standard 40’s safety.

  • Total car cost of $27000 or less.

  • As this is a large truck you will likely have to build large parts or the whole truck using 3d fixtures. Bear this in mind before you enter this market.

  • Submissions must be named as followed: EMHC1(4) - for the Model and EMHC1(4) - for the Engine Family. Trim and Variant are free.

Submissions

Submissions start now, and will end in 2 weeks on the 22nd of May. Submissions must be DM'd to me on the Forums, and they must also contain an advert on THIS THREAD. Lore behind the company and the car is a soft requirement as it'll make writeups a lot easier. If you car doesn't follow the rules you will be asked to resubmit an ammended version. YOU ONLY GET ONE RESUBMISSION PER ROUND.

Good luck and have fun, I can’t wait to see what you all cook up. Remember, 22nd of May deadline, until then, happy building!

Unrelated brands is not allowed, but Subsidiaries are, so you can have a Truck subsidiary or a Luxury subsidiary if you wanted.

As for market tastes, none for the first round but the following rounds will have tastes that are influenced by the results of the previous.

Cool! But my graphic design class knowledge is screaming at me about contrast and readibility.

oh god, is it that bad? what colour should i go for the text do you think

It’s not the text. It’s the background. Depending on where you stop scrolling, The lighter greens can makes the white difficult to read at times, and the difference in background colors can make it hard to read in general.

I’m not sure if we can highlight text here, but highlighting the text would help a lot.

I mean you could try black. But as a general rule, you want the background for a text box to be 1, or at least very similar, colors.

Here’s a chart to help with color selection.

That’s fair, I just fancied it to be poppies for VE day. I’ll see if i can find an image with better contrast

Makes sense. You could also try adjusting the image. Try darkening, or lightening, the entire image. This will reduce the contrast in the image itself, making the text easier to read (As long as the text color is right).

Even basic in-gallery/file-explorer editors usually have a contrast or saturation slider to do this with.

@Musicman27 this better?

  • Sorry kinda bad with the tire terms, what does this exactly mean?

Yeah this is completely unreadable. I can just read the little bit that is scrolling above the image. You could try adding a translucent white layer over the image

In general, it’s a bad idea to have an image background behind text. I get what you’re going for, and that isn’t an egregiously bad one, but maybe something like a poppies border around a blank space would be better. Or adding a translucent white layer/making the image very washed out would help.

The Carston Berg Coaches, a domestic manufacturer…

The Nasim Mk1:

Nasim is “A light breeze”, perfect for the convertible two seater to save face and bring some investors to build back the rubble left of the war… This is not a new design, but it’s all they got…

The Mk12:

After the Fiasco of war, were Carton Berg’s Coach factory was forced to create offroad trucks under license for the Ernstland, they had a lot of left over parts they managed to mend a practical car from

Using the same I6 they put in the offroad trucks, detuned to meet civilian needs. And a low quality AM radio equipped standard, this car gives you the hope you desperately need to face the world after the war! The luxury of hope for low price of 10,500!

Oh bugger, sod the image, too much of a headache

Didn’t notice it said “hard medium compound”. should just be “medium compound”, fixed now

The tire profile of 100, what does that influence, the tier width?

The aspect ratio or “height” of the tyre. in automation there should be a box below the tyre/rim size editor that tells you it

Im not at my pc rn so i cant show

That string of numbers at the bottom, that 100 in the middle is what you want

Got it thanks
