Family Haulers [1980] [REVIEW POSTED]

it’s a SUV! you are 15 years ahead of time on the mom mobile market!!
Haha didn’t think of that. Ace

On your car, how excessive is excessively built exactly? I am curious.
edit:Bottom end +4, top end +4, fuel +3, exhaust +2
Transmission +3, Brakes +1, Aero +2, Interior +2, Driver assists +3, Safety +2, suspension +1
Body +1, Frame +1, fixtures +1

So the whole car is over engineered.

I thought about using that body, but I couldn’t get the cost and performances to work out.
Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing happening. Must be a bug…
Will show my car here as soon as Vic has checked and approved it.
Yes, Vic knows about it, he clicks a few tabs to get things to settle out.

This is why I click through the tabs before actually marking down the scores, because there are a couple things that have to “settle in”, so to speak.

Even the pre-steam version did this with Aero specifically. You always had to click the cooling tab down then up once to get the values to calculate properly.

SUV’s weren’t “popular” as “family” vehicles until the early 90’s true, but they DID exist. See: Ford Bronco, Chevrolet Suburban, Dodge Ramcharger.

I will say from what I’ve seen so far is that there is MASSIVE variety in how you all are tackling this challenge. It’s great!

The first gen Jeep Cherokee 1974-1983, and it was based on the Wagoner which started production in 1963.

Edit to add en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_util … le#History

Apparently by todays definition they go back to 1935 with the Chevrolet Carryall Suburban

Honestly, what it reminded me of more than any of those was a Range Rover.

The Northern Motor Company has decided to enter this competition.

I present the Selkirk Estate, with it’s large cargo area and 3 liter cast iron straight 6.

Sorry, Trackpaduser. The slots all filled up before you submitted. Perhaps next ime.

ENTRIES ARE CLOSED. Those of you who are in on the first page who still want to show off your cars coughSIMONcough should do so now. I will post results in the next day or so, too tired to do so tonight.

Lightstar Industries is entering the 1980 Lightstar Neptune 424;

Daiki Automotive enters the competition with the 1980 Stardust L:

The car is powered by a turbocharged 3 litter cast iron inline 6 engine, producing over 200mn of torque at 3100RPM.

Romanov proudly presents the “Katusha”.

The Katusha stands for classic values. Families that need to transport their groceries (Vodka, Kartofel’, Kapusta) from Babushka’s village to their flat in the city with a carpet nailed to the wall, find everything they need in the Katusha.
Equipped with a newly developed 2.2 liter 4 cylinder iron curtain… eh block, the Katusha will get you where you need to go… in style.

Now with powerful steering, which our engineers stol… received in exchange for other technical developments from the USSR.

На здоровье!

(European version with an actual interior will follow in approximately three years!)

Liking the style of the Neptune 424 and Katusha - this competition has a lot of nifty designs!

Also, condolences to trackpaduser. I was busy from Friday when this started through Sunday evening, and I was feeling really nervous about whether I’d be able to make an entry at all in time, just because the slots were filling up so quickly.

I think Vic has really hit a good balance on these challenges, nothing super complicated, quick, easy and fun. This is not to say I dont like the other challenges but these are nice in how fast they go and the variety of what is submitted. Cant wait for the next one, just doubt I can do any after next week since I will be on vacation.

Alright, here we go with the results for the 1980 Family Haulers competition!

I’ll be working on the reviews for the Top 4 over the next few days. Congrats to the winners!

AWWWW YEAAAAAAH!

Aaand this is what happens if we try to combine “high torque”, “1980” and “family car” into one. At least I’ve sacrificed myself for everyone else…

edit; The newer grades (“A” and “B”) of Stardust Sedan has a smaller engine and AT to fix the fuel economy now. The car on fire? It should be resolved since the car is now heavier than before, including the “L” grade.

HEY!! I did much better than I thought!!    I also stole the transmission from a Ford, I think I used an E4OD as the benchmark and shot lower

I just lol’d while reading that.
10th place is what I was expecting from the car, so I’m happy with it.

For those who were wondering how a turd looks like, here it’s:

It’s like the typical Jalopnik car, a brown, rear-wheel drive diesel manual transmission wagon.

I can’t wait for the next challenge!

I have a thing for brown cars, because of early chldhood memories of a chocolate brown Mercedes.
Lovely car and shows nicely that no matter how many points one gets in Vic’s competition, it doesn’t do anything to the fact how many awesome cars were created here!

Thanks to Vic and everyone who participates!

On a sidenote: Romanov is again proud to have cracked the top 4, to celebrate this we give out fragrance trees for the first 500 Katushas. Buyers can choose between Sweet Vodka and Smoked Eel.
