First car for my son

The car must have less than 70kW AND the power to weight ratio must be lower than 55 kW/t.

I’ve changed in the first topic, it was litteraly traduced from italian, but bureaucratic language is made to be muddler.

I’ve built 5 cars and 4 engines for this ruleset so far and with the limitations placed on max HP and HP/ton there has not been much difference in price, PU, and ET, between SOHC and DOHC, even adding turbos didn’t change much. I haven’t used quality sliders on any of my builds so far, I haven’t seen the need to.

I know, infact the limit is here only to penalize unrealistic decisions. IRL every car (pretty much) nowadays have DOHC. With 145 ET you can still make a car without compromizing. You only need to avoid carbon fibre or active aeros (or things like that); if you want CF you need to sacrifice tech somewere else.

With CF the price would skyrocket and end up way over the budget.

Can we get some more info on how the competition is scored? E.g. whether comfort or practicality are important, or whether making the car cheaper than the target price is advantageous. Or is it up to @F17Francesco’s taste?

No, you can’t have specific information about that.
But i can tell you the judjment will be in 4 parts:

  • My fictional son will examine the sportiness, the wow effect and everithing a 18yo want from a car. Then he makes a list of eligible candidates. [In this part my personal taste will be mixed with math]
  • The father will evaluate the costs (price, economy, reliability and running costs) of the car, and the safety (safety and drivability included). [This part will be pure math]
  • The two will fight. [This part will not be violent, i hope]
  • They found a compromise and choose a car to buy. [In this part someone win, many other will loose, but i hope everyone have fun]

So, it’s up to you choose the best way. It can be to praise the son with a fun car or to praise the dad and make a supercheap and super safe car. Or maybe the best way is in the middle. I don’t know, and even if i know, i won’t tell you, that’s your part.

I hope there’s a video of this part.

I guess if I could ask a question of the father or son it would be how long they would want to keep the car. Likely the power restriction would get boring for the son once he is allowed unrestricted power, and the practicality demands of a car would increase as he grows up (unless he is wealthy enough to have multiple cars), so approaching this from a realistic view would they prefer a car with good resale opportunity (e.g. a low powered practical hatchback that many people would buy rather than a low powered sports coupe with a very niche market)?

As I said earlier this car is only for the son. In family there are other cars (one or two, it’s not important).
How long do they expect to keep the car? As long as the son can buy one himself, supposedly 8 years.
They don’t tink about selling this car in a short period of time.

I’ve noticed you can squeeze a lot into that engineering time and budget, e.g. a tiny V12 engine could be well under-budget. Should we stick to being ‘realistic’ or can we do whatever while keeping the price estimate under control?

You can do whatever you want, i’ll be realistic choosing the winner.
V12s can be charming, but i think they have more than one downside, especially because an I3 NA is more than enough to produce the power requested.

Are there any other quirks of cars in Italy that we need to be aware of? E.g. in some countries any car with a turbocharger can be more expensive the insure, regardless of power, and the same with engine capacity.

No, insurance costs depend on the power, the experience of the driver and the home region, nothing you can control.
Tax costs depend only on power and they skyrocket over 250hp. Don’t worry about it.
Petrol car (exept for sport one and very small cars) are not so popular, ialians prefer diesels (over 55%), LPG and Natural gas. Even here, nothing you can control.
Many people in italy hate automatic gearbox instead in the cities they are loved. Our family is indifferent on the subject, they evaluate both possibility.
I can not think of anything else at the moment
