You can operate those using a driving license in Quebec and many other jurisdictions in North America, and even if they are trikes the Morgan 3-Wheeler is one as well and is definitively a track toy, so I don’t really see your point.
And while your figures are true, I am quite sure they are similar in the Northern US.
Especially when you consider that probably at least half of that 35% is pickup trucks.

but diesel VW Golf/Jetta wagons are very common while it seems that neither wagons nor diesels are popular in the US. [/quote]
IIRC the golf wagon is not even sold in the states, even though it seems fairly popular here.
Quebec is an oddball unto itself. But Canada proper lists them as a motorbike. Same as any other three-wheeler. But a proper track car cannot be purchased here. Anything from Ariel, kit cars, anything from Ultima, Mosler, KTM X-Bow… A lot of vehicles that are legal in America, are illegal in Canada. Not really sure how else to describe that. There ARE differences there.
And America has 17.5% AWD/4WD, according to Edmunds. Again, not trying to get in to a pissing match or anything, and I realize southern Canada and northern US have similar climates, because of course they do. But they are different markets as viewed from an international perspective.
