Modern Turbochargers

Modern VW, BMW, Merc engines have shed loads of torque where the magic all begins from just 1500RPM and is flat all the way to 5000RPM. To achieve the same torque in automation, it takes 2000RPM and it only lasts till 4500RPM. I have tried various turbocharger configurations by configuring the compressor, turbine, ar ratio etc but it just doesn’t happen. I believe the modern engines use electric systems to limit boost at lower RPMs and increase it as the RPM increases, thus allowing for earlier torque, though I am not sure about this.

Put simply, can you add a feature that allows you to electronically control turbochargers/allow turbochargers create more torque at lower RPMs?

The turbo system used right now is based on 80s tech, what you see is accurate for the 80s, this will eventually be updated :wink:

The hyper flat torque curve in modern engines, is due to torque limiting in the ECU programming.
Can be seen in the shape of the torque curve when adding a tuned chip.

This is a good example of how much a modern large turbo engine can be limited by the manufacturer, to extend the life of the driveline.

Yes! Without ECU limiter, most modern turbo-engine torque curves would look a lot more rugged. :slight_smile:
