My daily and the weekend toy - warning, get coffee. And food

…cause these pair are long reads!

Sorry about linking to another forum - I know it’s a pain and it puts people off - but the threads are pretty long and picture heavy, so I’d rather not fill this thread up, but if you have any questions or comments, fire away and I’ll answer them in here.

My daily driver, it’s a tiny little 1.4 engine but has a shedload of shiny parts made for it:

And the weekend racer, spaceframed buggy with a Mazda rotary engine in the back to compete in Safari’s:

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy building/breaking them!

Wow that buggy thing is awesome

Haha, cheers.
Cheap, ugly and built out of scrapyard bits but it puts a hell of a grin on the front of my head

They tend to be the best

They do, can’t seem to get rid of this mid-range misfire at the moment though so it’s learning new swear words…

That buggy looks like a Lotus 7 took steroids.

Oops :frowning:

Owch… :frowning:

What is the diff out of?

:frowning: Uffda. That’s not what you want to see when you crap open your diff.

Time to weld the diff.

^I’ll pass on that!

The diff is a Renault UN5 unit - generally regarded as pretty damned strong - but I think all the impacts are making it flex and fatiguing it. :frowning:

Still, does mean we can take the gears down the road to HPC to have some alterations made for next year…

Well, good news, local firm can make the gears - - somewhere between £600-800 for them.

Bad news, the money budgeted for those has had to go for some new tyres and brake pads :frowning:

Might have accidentally bought the gears instead of the brake pads, whoops.
One makes you go faster, one makes you go slower, had to make a choice

Simulation says it should drop the 0-110mph time from 42 seconds to a rather more respectable 19s…

well think of it this way: before you didn’t NEEEEED the brake pads. Now you do

We’ll, I’m sure the remains of the steel backing pads will do something…

Well, spent the weeking fabricating the new front mudguard mounts, made new steering tie-rods, and stripped the steering rack.
Rack had loads of play in it and no provision for any adjustment for wear and tear, so I had to sand the whole case down by hand with wet + dry paper, until it got back to a nice, tight sliding fit again, then bond tiny strips of 0.25mm thick shim steel to the rack bar to bring it back into proper engagement with the pinion, and then make some more tiny strips of shims to give the appropriate clearance back on the casing, as well as changing all the support bearings.

It involved lots of swearing.
And it’s a good job the firm that make the rack have gone bust so I can’t go over the pond and kick them square in the nuts.

If we can find a touch more sponsorship, or cut down on bacon sandwich consumption for a bit, it’s getting supercharged in the summer.

Be a lot more fun and a lot less cash than wasting $1500 on poorly machined rotors
