On the morning of July 30, ISEA made history when Gasmean astronaut Alec Cunningham became the first man to walk on the moon.
Just four days earlier, three Gasmean astronauts - Commander Alec Cunningham, Lunar Module Pilot Declan "Burt" Goodman, and Command Module Pilot Luke Robinson - were strapped inside the Hemera-11 spacecraft and launched to the moon aboard a Kronos V rocket. Upon arrival, Alec Cunningham and Burt Goodman walked the surface of the moon: collecting surface samples, playing golf, and planting a Gasmean flag signifying the nation's victory in the space race.
"Space is hard," said ISEA chairman Rudy Howell in an interview post landing. "These last two years took lots of sacrifice, and the sacrifices made by our scientists, engineers, and astronauts will not be forgotten. It is because of them that mankind has achieved the unachievable."
The crew is now on their way back from the moon, bringing with them plenty of lunar souvenirs. During a radio interview with astronaut Burt Goodman, when he was asked his thoughts in landing on the moon in '69, he responded, "Nice."

1969 - It's Time to Go

A lot of good things were happening at Njord Automobile. The Hetvesian home market was strong and more Gasmeans were buying the FB-414 every day; keeping profits at a cool $3M a month. The FB-414 successor was just around the corner, and with it advanced technology that would not only pass the ever tightening safety and emissions regulations but also sell to new, niche markets. It was also just a week before Christmas, and employees were buzzing about their parties and vacations planned for their holiday leave.

But not everything was good for Jensen. The day he had feared had finally come.

Knock knock knock

Jensen snuffed his smoking cigarette in an ashtray. “Come in.”

It was Maria. She was dressed in a brown tweed blazer jacket and skirt with a white button up shirt. Her black heels clicked on the linoleum as she entered the room, closing the door behind her. Her face was expressionless. She knew what she was in for.

“Well, I tried everything I could,” said Jensen while pulling a folded white envelope from his desk. “Caesar’s forcing me to give you three months’ notice of your termination due to performance targets not being met.”

Maria’s eyes glanced toward the envelope, then towards Jensen. She showed no emotion beyond clenching her jaw. “I was hoping to get something aligned before this.”

“Did Tall Media Group ever reach back?” asked Jensen.

Maria rubbed her temples, “They called me yesterday saying they’re going with someone else.”

“Ridiculous,” sighed Jensen, brushing his hair back. “They don’t know what they’re missing.”

“No one wants to hire a fifty year old woman,” said Maria disappointedly. “Three years, hundreds of applications, a handful of interviews, and not one offer.”

“You know my offer still stands, right? I know some people inside General Autos who could set you up with a position.”

“I appreciate the offer, I do,” Maria responded. “But I can’t move that far. Not with Mattias still in school and Leonard at Hiuppu.”

The two sat in silence in the office for some time. Outside they could hear jeers and clapping, some coworkers exchanging gifts. The last ember from Jensen’s cigarette flickered its last dying light before blending with the grey ash in the tray.

“I’m sorry Maria,” sighed Jensen. “What this company did to you was unfair. No, it was bullshit. You deserved better. I can’t stop the termination from happening, but I’ll try my best to make things as smooth for you as possible. Take all the time you need to finish up and transfer your projects.”

“Thanks, Jensen. You didn’t have to cover me as long as you did.”

Jensen leaned forward, resting his elbows on his desk, looking genuinely exhausted. "Don’t thank me. If I had actual autonomy in this chair, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

Maria gave a half smirk. “At least you got your 4x4. That’s more than my husband ever got.”

Jensen sat, not knowing what else to say.

“I just need a week to wrap things up,” said Maria while picking up the envelope, twirling it in her fingers. “After that, I’ll do whatever you need until my three months are up.”

“If you’d like, you could go on garden leave. It’d give you more time for applications.”

Maria paused, thinking the offer over. “Sure, I’d like that.”

After their meeting, Maria finished up some of her tasks and delegated the bigger projects to her coworkers over the next week. By the time Friday rolled around Maria gave her outgoing speech, the marketing team had a farewell party, and her coworkers gave their goodbyes. At the front door to the headquarters Jensen gave the senior marketing professional a handshake and offered to be used as a reference. With one last goodbye Maria left, never to return to Njord Automobile AB.

VIANTA INDEPENDENCE MARCHES SPARKS CIVIL UNREST!

The latest protest for Viantan independence quickly descended into a full blown riot, with reporters on the scene reporting at least four protestors have been killed in conflicts with law enforcement.
Vianta previously was an island territory under the influence from Fruinia; however following the Great War the island was swept up by Gasmea as reparations for Fruinia's alliance with the Axis powers per the Chapelle Accords. Vianta's incorporation into Gasmea's sphere of influence has not sat well with the island citizens, some of which formed a group called the Vianta Freedom Fighters, or the VFF.
The VFF have gained strong support from Viantan citizens, whose protests have only grown larger and more violent throughout the 1960s. The latest protest in Occia started peacefully, however quickly turned violent when shots were fired in the crowd. In a matter of minutes cars were flipped and torched, fights broke out with riot officers, and multiple businesses were looted. Some citizens called the event the start of the "Viantan Revolution."
The riot has slowed down, however the Gasmean Federal Government is taking no chances with the VFF, with reports of military support on route to Vianta to curb uprisings on the island.

1970 - Blazing Trails

Despite the rough development behind the scenes, the FB-414 was the right car to bring Njord from a plucky startup to an established competitor in the Hetvesian automobile industry. Over its 11 year production over 140,000 FB-414s were delivered to happy customers across Hetvesia, Gasmea, and even some in Fruinia. This was also during a market recession through the mid 1960s. It was by far the most profitable car Njord had produced yet bringing company valuation above $200M.

Since 1966, Njord Automobile had been making use of that profit - along with a $150M business loan - to introduce the next generation Njord to replace the FB-414 and the large scale factory infrastructure the advanced design demanded.


Hot Off the Press

The Reimsboden automobile production facility has introduced a new facility crucial for the production of the next generation Njord: steel presses.

The factory expansion was designed and constructed by Laine Heavy Industry AB, a Hetvesian contract engineering consultancy firm specializing in large scale industrial applications. Securing a $103M contract from Njord Automobile AB, the manufacturing and industrial engineers at Laine Heavy Industry developed a world-class production facility for the auto company.

Mechanical stamping presses, hydraulic presses, and press brakes were sourced from some of the largest legacy heavy duty manufacturers including the Crafton Machine Corporation and Pollard LLC. The dies were designed and manufactured in house by Laine Heavy Industry.

All housed in a facility just outside of the main factory building, the tooling expansion made the in-house manufacture of doors, body panels, and chassis floor pans possible. Compared to the highly manual chassis and body manufacturing process used by the old version of the factory, the factory automation introduced massively improved production efficiency by 10% while also bringing 400 new jobs for the Reimsboden community.

To handle the increased production capacity of the optimized automobile chassis facility, the in-house team of Njord Automobile industrial engineers updated the 4CCT engine assembly line with higher quality milling machines less prone to breakdowns and stoppages. The factory also received a major injection of automated manufacturing technologies to improve manufacturing tolerances and overall unit output. One of the improvements - an automated pneumatic gauging system directly integrated in the line - used air pressure to measure cylinder bore tolerance and could automatically stop production when issues were detected, improving quality inspection consistency and preventing defect escapes.

The $170M spent and years of work would pay off. With the bump up in manufacturing capabilities, the next generation Njord Automobile could now utilize chassis structure technology that was impossible to produce a decade ago.


'71 Njord ND Series Release

After four long years of development Njord Automobile is proud to introduce the next chapter in Hetvesian motoring: the ND Series.

The ND Series is the most advanced automobile to come from the Reimsboden headquarters, featuring the latest and greatest in passenger safety technology, premium creature comforts, and - depending on the spec - ultimate traction capabilities to get you just about anywhere. It is a complete rethinking of the car.

The modern look was commissioned by vehicle stylist Heimo Pietilä from Hetvesian company Henki Design Studio. Henki Design is one of the largest industrial design firms of the era and contracted styling for a wide range of products: including tractors, train cars, home appliances, and of course cars.

When designing the ND Series Heimo took inspiration from the boxy executive cars that were coming from the Hetvesian luxury automakers. There are multiple styling cues that call back to the designs of Njord’s past; the chrome venting on the front fender - housing a side-mounted indicator - was pulled from the FB-414, and the front split grill takes some inspiration from the '50s Futaero concept car.

In every dimension the car is bigger, wider, and taller than the outgoing FB-414. Now, the car is 4.5 m long and 1.8 m wide, leaving plenty of room to stretch inside. The beltline is also shifted upwards making the car feel much larger and stately; the ND Series could be mistaken for a luxury car.

The forward-thinking styling carries through to the interior. The patterned cloth and leather seats make a return, and the dashboard is now completely padded in soft-form plastic. Interior safety technology has made a massive leap forward, introducing three-point seatbelts and headrests for all passengers.

The front seats include multiple adjustments including lumbar to ensure just the right fit for maximum comfort. Thick jute and bitumen sound insulation is used extensively throughout the passenger compartment; the only sound you’ll hear is the great jams coming out from your high-quality AM radio with retractable antenna.

On the topic of vehicle safety, the chassis and body structure has been completely redesigned with your safety in mind. Utilizing mechanical designs from the Futaero concept car, the ND series features a unibody steel frame and a stiff safety cell encapsulating the passenger compartment.

The heavy-duty steel bumpers front and rear keeps you and the body safe from fender benders; in the case of serious impacts the engine compartment and trunk have been engineered to deform in a controlled manner. If you find things upside-down, not to worry as the roof pillars have been reinforced to support the weight of the car.

The 4CCT powertrain makes a return, and small tweaks have been made to bring tailpipe emissions into compliance with the latest requirements from Gasmea and Fruinia. The engine has also gained some extra power, bringing 72 kW (98 hp) @ 5000 RPM.

Despite the added weight from all the premium interior goodies and safety structures, 0-100 km/h (62 mph) is capable in 11.6 seconds. Efficiency has also improved, bringing a 10.2 L / 100 km (23 mpg) rated average fuel economy.

The trim levels have been completely rethought. Gone is the base trim level; all Njord automobiles now come with the same level of luxury across every model. Rather than having trim levels based on price points, the trims are now separated by what experience you desire. Want the sleek lines of an executive sedan? Option for the ND-4202. Are you the type who likes to haul lots of luggage? Option for the ND-5202 with its estate body.

But wait a minute, we are far from done. There is also a third trim option, a wild one for the adventurous types.

Njord does things differently, and the ND-5204 is the newest example of what happens when we let our engineers break the rules. Where the ND-4202 and ND-5202 retain the standard drivetrain layout pushing power to the rear wheels only, the ND-5204 is the first ever family car equipped with four-wheel drive.

Under normal driving conditions, the ND-5204 behaves like a standard Njord - sending power to the rear wheels. When the environment calls for extra traction such as in the snow and ice, the driver can actuate the 4WD system with a lever mounted on the center column, pulling the car out of sticky situations.

Along with 4WD, the ND-5204 also comes with all-terrain tires, a 4 cm (1.5 in) lift, mudflaps, and a factory-fitted roof rack for carrying all sorts of cargo for the journey. Adapters can be purchased at Njord dealerships for mounting specialty cargo suck as bikes, skis, surfboards, and even canoes.

Trims and Options

Three trims for three different lifestyles. Whether you pick the sleek ND-4202, the dependable ND-5202, or the sturdy ND-5204 is up to you, each will come with eight available color options to choose from. I have a feeling that the forward leap that came with the steel presses will greatly increase profits, and the new management might try repeating this by making a smaller, slightly cheaper car whenever there are enough funds for a new factory.

RIVERSIDE BURGULARS SUSPECTED TO BE TIED TO PRESIDENT BYERS!

In the early morning of 27 June, 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into the Federalist National Union headquarters at the Riverside, an office-hotel-apartment complex in Harford, Gasmea. Sophisticated electronic bugging equipment, along with burglary tools, cameras with film, and pen-sized tear gas canisters were found at the scene of the crime. The five suspects, three of which being former Viantan citizens, were charged with felonious burglary and possession of implements of crime.
However in a twist of events it has come to discovery that one of the suspects, Aidan MacDonald, was the salaried security coordinator for President Byers' reelection committee. Former Executive House aide August Wolfe has also been linked to the five Riverside suspects.
Gasmean President Byers has announced that an internal investigation will be conducted by the Executive House into administration officials. Executive House Press Secretary Ronald Ziegler dismissed the Riverside break-in as a "Third-rate burglary attempt," denying any involvement by President Byers or his top strategists. Ziegler commented, "To suggest that this administration, which currently holds a commanding lead in the polls, would authorize an operation against the Federalists is not only absurd, but politically motivated."

1972 - Go Away Mr. Tax Man

It was midday Tuesday morning and the leadership team was conducting their monthly tag up meeting; amongst them were Head of Marketing Jensen Newman, CEO Caesar Bendel, and new Chief Designer Immanuel Pukki - freshly promoted by the CEO for his leadership in developing the 4WD system for the ND-5204. The meeting room was brown and beige and reeked of decades of cigarette smoke embedded in the yellow wallpaper. Inside housed a long dark oak table with leaders lining the sides and the CEO at the end.

Caesar wasn’t one to show a smile - at least not a genuine one - but today he was grinning ear to ear.

“I’ve just got the final sales numbers for the last year,” said Caesar. “18,000 cars, a 28% increase in volume from the FB-414. This is already a massive achievement by this team, but that doesn’t paint the full picture. Even with logistics and loan repayments factored in we have doubled our profits to $6 million a month.”

Applause filled the room at the revelation. The ND Series was a smash hit and had flooded the Njord Automobile coffers with pools of cash.

Caesar clapped a few times while he stood up from his chair, then placed his hands on the table like a man ready to close a deal. “We need to act quickly with this massive injection of funds from the ND. If our balance sheets show us having these kinds of profits by the end of the year the tax man is going to bend us over the table.” Caesar stood off the table and rubbed his fingers on his chin, pondering. “The question is, how?”

“We could start with putting some of those funds into upgrading our research efforts,” piped up David Vaartjes, the current Head of R&D. He flipped through some pages in his notebook before continuing, “As we all know the Gasmean government has been really starting to crack down on emissions regulations as of late and it’s only going to get worse. I’ve heard from some sources that they’re already launching WES 4 standards by the end of the year.”

“Didn’t they just pass WES 3 last year?” asked an engineering lead.

“They did,” responded David. “And considering how many countries are passing regulations with no sign of slowing down we need to start investing in improving our emissions technology. I suggest a better flow bench for optimizing powertrain combustion and a wind tunnel for the R&D facility.”

“How much is that?” asked Caesar.

David referenced a table he wrote down in his notebook, “I’ll only need about $6 million over the next year to get some hands on working on fuel system research. The wind tunnel will need about $40 million but it’s just a one time cost for construction.”

Caesar winced at the figure. “We’ll need to find some ways to cut down the cost for that wind tunnel, but I agree we’ll need to keep ahead on passing emissions regulations. Good idea, David. Any other ideas?”

The Chief Designer Immanuel spoke up, “I thought Heimo Pietilä did a pretty good job designing the ND Series. It helped my engineers quite a bit being able to focus more on the technicals and bluntly the upgrade in styling going from the FB-414 to the ND Series is proof they aren’t suited for styling. I think we should poach him from Henki Design Studio and have him manage an in-house design studio for our next cars.”

“Agreed,” commented Caesar while taking some notes. “Don’t really need too much infrastructure for that I’d imagine. Mostly overhead for designer positions and a room for them to work in.”

When Caesar finished writing into his notepad he continued, “These are all great ideas but I’m thinking something bigger. We have that large plot of land in Zellhof we acquired to dodge last year’s taxes we aren’t doing anything with. I’m thinking we spend this money on developing a new product line to be sold with the ND Series.” Caesar looked right towards Jensen. “What do you think, salesman?”

Jensen was caught off guard daydreaming. “Yeah, uh… what?”

“You know the market better than anyone here, Jensen,” pointed Caesar. “What kind of person would buy a Njord?”

Jensen thought for a minute; thinking back to the marketing demographic surveys his team had been analyzing from Gasmea. “Architects, engineers, physicians. Upper-middle class white collar buyers, mostly. Many of which with established families.”

“So in other words old people, right?” prodded Caesar.

Jensen replied, “Sort of. Since dropping the base trims buyers tend to skew more on the premium side, but—”

“The fact of the matter is people see Njord as a ‘grandpa car’ brand,” interrupted Caesar. “We need something smaller, affordable. Something that attracts young buyers to Njord. A two door compact for the early career professionals. That’s the idea we need.”

Jensen nodded, the gears in his head finally catching up to the CEO’s vision. “A premium compact. If we give it a fastback or a sporty silhouette, it could completely redefine the brand for the next generation.”

“Exactly,” Caesar said, slamming his notepad shut with a decisive thud. “David, set up a meeting to draft the budget for that wind tunnel. Immanuel, get on the phone and poach Pietilä before Henki Design knows what hit them. Jensen, I want a market proposal for this youth compact on my desk by Monday.”

Caesar stood up, adjusting his suit jacket. “Let’s get to work, gentlemen. We’ve got money to spend, and I’ll be damned if the tax man sees a single cent of it.”

Looks like my crystal ball was right once again when I said Njord will be making a smaller car! I’ll go double or nothing and say that this new car will debut front wheel drive for the company to differentiate it from the more expensive ND.

LINES GROW AS FUEL SUPPLY SHRINKS!

Lines continue to grow as fuel stations run low on petroleum. Many stations have gone dry, and the few with supply left are a frenzy of lines, rations, and in some cases fist fights for the last ounce of fuel for their cars.
On early September the Dalluhan Organization of Petroleum Exporters (DOPE) announced a total oil embargo against Gasmea and its ally - Hetvesia - in response to supporting the Al-Jauf Fedayeen resistance that attempted to take over the oil wells near Al Nemrah. Since the announcement Dalluha has not exported any oil and many refineries have begun running out of reserves to sustain demand. The global market for oil has exploded in cost jumping from $3 to $12 per barrel.
Hetvesian Parliament have begun work to draft policy that would position a temporary partial subsidy on the cost of fuel to consumers to quell the financial impact the skyrocketing fuel costs have on the nation. Where many politicians have shown support for the emergency policy, some members of the New Progression (NP) party debated using the tax funds on upgrading Hetvesia's public transit systems. In an interview with our news team NP party official Jørn Jensen said, "Our overreliance on oil has bit us where it hurts. Rather than band-aid fuel costs which will inevitably continue to rise as the globe becomes less stable, Hetvesia needs to use this situation to address the root problem: reducing our reliance on foreign oil through smarter transportation methods."
As Hetvesian Parliament continues to draft a response to DOPE and the oil embargo, Gasmea has already begun working on a response of their own. The politicians in Gasmea's capitol are allegedly considering a nationwide speed limit of 55 mph - or about 90 km/h - to reduce passenger vehicle fuel consumption.
Until an agreement can be made with DOPE to lift the embargo citizens are suggested to limit vehicle travel to essential transit only and to limit fuel purchases to stabilize fuel demand.

1973 - Logistic Pointers

With the Njord compact project underway and some dough burning holes in Njord’s pockets, the company was prime and ready for expansion. Governments around the world were passing stricter and stricter emissions and safety regulations, and the competition‘s technology was quickly catching up to Njord. Investing into research and development facilities such as a new design studio and a high-tech wind tunnel was the agreed proposal, however local NIMBYs would have other ideas.

To handle the company’s expanded logistics between vehicle development and the soon-to-be Njord compact manufacturing in parallel with the ND Series, the company would require a shakeup in organizational management to handle the increased operational complexity.


C-Suite Organizational Restructuring

There had been very high turnover over the last decade in the leadership team at Njord Automobile AB, and the highly organic organizational structure was not helping with tribal knowledge loss each time an employee was fired or quit. With a second product line coming around the corner CEO Caesar Bendel saw this as an opportunity to reorganize the executive organizational structure to be more mechanistic; splitting leadership roles into organized bureaucratic positions with higher specialization in each respective field.

Moving from an organic to mechanistic organizational structure had its disadvantages. Moving from lateral to vertical decision making authority would mean more added bureaucracy, making decision making slower, more complex, and more expensive. On the flip end, however, centralizing decision making would improve company logistic capabilities and in the event someone leaves a position they would be easier to replace.

With approval from the Njord Automobile AB Board of Directors, the CEO remodeled the leadership organizational structure to formalize the C-Suite.

As was the case before the reorg, Caesar Bendel would remain as Chief Executive Officer (CEO); responsible for directing the company direction and vision by leading the rest of the C-Suite. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) was a new position to be managed by Göpf Gartmann and would be responsible for managing overall financial activities for Njord Automobile, including balance sheet reporting, managing taxes, and handling loans.

Jensen Newman would be the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), which was essentially the same position as he held before - Head of Marketing - but with a new title. He would be responsible for marketing activities and dealership support, including campaigns and surveys. David Lutz was a senior production director prior to the reorganization, now promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO). He was responsible for closely working with other executives as well as vehicle production in day-to-day activities. The COO position was essentially the right-hand man of the CEO.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) position was given to Faje Bergius, who was responsible for overseeing technology and design development of Njord Automobile products. He would oversee the Head of R&D David Vaartjes as well as new hire Heimo Pietilä who oversaw the new Njord design studio. The Chief Product Officer (CPO) was Esben Kristoffersen - a close business partner to Caesar Bendel - who would be responsible for the management of Njord’s product creation. He would manage the Lead Chassis Engineer Krister Afzelius as well as Lead Powertrain Engineer Immanuel Pukki.

With the new executive organizational structure set in place, Njord Automobile AB now had the leadership capability to handle the increased logistical load of handling two product lines, meaning the company would be ready when the new compact Njord was released and in production at the to-be-constructed Zellhof automobile plant.


Gasmean Malaise

For the automotive industry it seemed like the sky was falling. Congressional politicians in Harford had been hard at work being a major thorn in the car companies’ side; multiple bills were passed requiring cars to massively reduce vehicle emissions while also requiring heavy safety equipment.

For emissions, Gasmea would require all new cars sold in 1975 to meet WES 5 standards with the set maximum allowable emissions: 1,500 mg/km of hydrocarbons (HC), 15,000 mg/km of carbon monoxides (CO), and 3,100 mg/km of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Emissions regulations were scheduled to be increased the following year - 1976 - with WES 6 standards; in-line with Fruinia’s emissions policy with the following maximums: 410 mg/km of HC, 3,400 mg/km of CO, and 2,000 mg/km of NOx.

This was a problem for Njord. The most emissions-friendly model - the ND-4202 - was only capable of meeting WES 4 standards with dynamometer tests showing 1,180 mg/km HC, 20,900 mg/km CO, and 1,560 mg/km NOx; for WES 6 standards the car failed HC by 189% and CO by 517%.

The problems didn’t stop at emissions, either. Back in 1971 Gasmea passed regulation requiring all 1973 model year cars to be fitted with bumpers capable of withstanding 5 mph collisions at the front and 2.5 mph collisions at the rear - which the bumpers fitted to the safety-oriented ND Series were already capable of. However Gasmea had doubled down and passed even stricter regulations for the 1974 model year. The new standards required 5 mph bumpers both front and rear; the front bumper must be able to protect the grille and headlights under 5 mph angular impacts as well. The current bumpers on the ND Series could not pass these.

The engineering team was caught between a rock and a hard place. They had to find a way to massively reduce the ND Series’ emissions while also fitting it with large, heavy, un-aerodynamic bumpers. It was an engineering challenge for the ages.

First things first were the bumpers. The engineers did not have much time to put together a solution immediately, thus fitting massive chunks of high-strength rubber on the front of the car to pass regulations until they could design a better solution. The rubber bumpers didn’t do the car’s styling any justice; they were massive, out of place, and unsightly. Fortunately they were only installed to cars being sold in the Gasmean market with Hetvesian and Fruinian models keeping the original look.

Emissions were a different animal though. The engineers were tasked to work closely with the R&D facility to find ways to optimize fuel delivery and fit a two-way catalytic converter for the ‘76 model year without losing a ton of power.


Modern Design Strategy

The new design studio was completed just in time for the organizational restructuring that split the design and engineering teams. The studio itself was nothing special - just a large room with an open-floor layout of desks, cabinets, and space for full-scale clay models. There were posters of Njord’s past models along with current competitors to serve as inspiration for designing new cars.

Even though organizationally the teams were split, some of the design engineers still worked closely with the newly founded design studio; and now they had the latest and greatest in technology to aid in their efforts: the personal computer.

These computers - the KOP 30MAX - were some of the first small-scale computers to come out since the breakthrough of microprocessors in 1971. Njord only had a few (they were still incredibly expensive) and their capabilities were still limited to basic text-based tasks such as data processing, but even having them in the design room acted as a motivator for the design team to embrace the latest and greatest technology for future Njord automobiles.


Aerodynamic Testing Facility

Back in 1948 when Njord Automobile constructed the Reimsboden vehicle testing facility the location was very rural. Over time this changed as pressure for new housing prompted the Reimsboden city council to expand residential and commercial zoning. Now in 1973, the testing facility was near lots of suburban development, meaning expansions to the facility such as a wind tunnel had to go through council approval before receiving permitting for construction.

When local residents learned about the planned construction they attended town hall meetings and loudly voiced their disapproval of allowing the wind tunnel to be constructed. The outlook for extra jobs brought by operating the wind tunnel paled compared to the noise the facility would emanate during operation. During operation the noise was calculated to be about 70 dB at the neighborhoods nearest to the facility, or about as loud as a vacuum cleaner.

With strong disapproval from the public and Njord having no loophole around noise ordinances since the neighborhood was constructed prior to the wind tunnel plans, the Reimsboden city council rejected the building proposal and refused permitting unless Njord could find a way to reduce the noise.

David Vaartjes was stumped on solutions. They could redesign the facility to be fit with acoustic baffling louvers at the entry and exit of the wind tunnel, however fitting the louvers made the tunnel’s airflow turbulent, requiring a much larger setting chamber to achieve laminar flow. Changing the design to a closed loop system - keeping airflow within the system - would eliminate most external noise, however the current unmuffled open-air design was already massively out of budget at $40M to construct. He even considered planting a thick row of trees and hedges around the testing facility to keep noise within the property lines; however some hand calculations showed the difference in noise level was barely negligible - a rounding error.

For a while David struggled with ideas and was about ready to throw in the towel when he got his inspiration from an aerodynamics engineering research paper from scientists at ISEA - the Gasmean aerospace agency. The paper was a case study where a water tunnel was used to analyze the aerodynamic properties of early prototype SSTO spacecraft.

According to the paper, aerodynamic similarity of a model can be measured by a formula that calculates Reynold’s number: dependent on fluid density (ρ), fluid velocity (V), characteristic length of the model (L), and the dynamic viscosity of the fluid (μ). From Reynold’s formula, water - which has a higher density and dynamic viscosity than air - can still be a suitable fluid for analyzing aerodynamic properties provided the model is scaled down in size and fluid velocity. The biggest limitation of the model was analyzing aerodynamic properties at supersonic speeds where the incompressible nature of water makes modelling compressible air flow impossible - which was not a problem for Njord as there were no plans to make any cars that could go Mach.

Settling on the idea David got his team together to draft a 1:4 scale water tunnel to be installed within the Reimsboden testing facility without any pushback from city council - the water tunnel would run on small-scale industrial water pumps that barely emitted any noise running at low velocities. Compared to the original wind tunnel plan the water tunnel was far quicker and cheaper to construct, only requiring six months and $3M.

The newly constructed facility housed a massive glass-walled viewing tank where detailed 1:4 scale clay models - waterproofed with a specialized resin coating - were secured to the floor with strain gauges. By injecting multi-colored fluorescent dyes ahead of the vehicle, the engineers could visually map the fluid dynamics in real-time.

The visual scale model allowed for rapid, iterative design changes to be made and analyzed; the addition made early prototyping much faster and cheaper, giving engineers and designers a way to explore a plethora of prototypes before committing to a later established design. Pushing development costs earlier in the design cycle meant fewer instances of costly late-cycle changes, especially when the water tunnel was used in conjunction with road testing and renting full-scale wind tunnel time at other facilities with full-scale prototypes closer to final design.

The coming years may pose some challenges as cars are demanded to be more efficient and consumers demand more advanced designs; however between the organizational restructuring, in house design studio, and the water-powered fluid dynamics model, Njord Automobile was prepared for the challenges ahead.

That would be the Level 1 Wind Tunnel upgrade in the headquarters. A Level 1 has an upfront cost of $3M whereas a Level 2 costs $40M. Considering the costs of constructing a wind tunnel IRL, it would make sense that a Level 1 would be much simpler than a full-scale wind tunnel.

ELI TKOs MAXIMILIAN & KEEPS TITLE!

The Killin in Corve - match three between undisputed champion Chaka Eli and challenger Adam Maximilian for heavyweight title of the world - was a bloody, bone-breaking beatdown between two titans. A match that sports journalists have already begun calling the "greatest fight of all time."
From the start of the first round Eli shook Maximilian with fast right jabs across the jaw and intense mind games, verbally taunting the fighter with "You're washed, Maxi. You're going back to the trenches." In the first two rounds it was looking like a clear victory for Eli until a freight train met his jaw from Maximillian in round 3. The hit sparked Maximillian, who was able to dodge a succession of punches from the gobsmacked Eli.
By round 5 Maximillian had found his groove, continuing to dodge shots from a very furious heavyweight champion, even swapping from his left to right to confuse the fighter. Shortly after the bell rang in round six Maximillian drove a piledriver left into Eli's face, knocking the champion to the ground for the first time during the fight. Eli got back up and held the ropes as Maximilian continued pushing jabs.
Eli could take a hit - as evidenced in his title fight in Occia with Steinmeyer '72 - though by round 9 the fighter was barely standing. "Man, I'm about to die," spoke the heavyweight champion. His opponent Maximilian was not much better, his face swollen and nose broken from hard hits from Eli in the previous round. The fight descended into a brutal brawl between the exhausted fighters until on the final round, the ring covered in blood and sweat.
The fight changed to Eli's favor when a hard right swing knocked out Maximilian's mouth guard in round 14, causing the challenger to stammer back. The hit inspired Eli who regained enough energy to beat down the fighter with hard lefts and rights, viewers next to the ring audibly hearing the cracking of Maximilian's ribs.
Seeing the results from round 14, Maximillian's coach Patrick Moore threw in the towel, crowning Chaka Eli still undefeated world heavyweight champion. In an interview after the fight Eli commented, "Maximilian quit just before I did. I didn't think I had anymore in me."

It is with profound solemnity that Njord Automobile AB announces the passing of our company founder and former Chief Executive Officer Rasmus Hagerström. Rasmus passed away peacefully Saturday evening at the age of 79 following complications from pulmonary edema.

As our company operations continues to expand we must take a moment to pause and remember the man that started it all.

In 1943, when our corporation was founded from sister company Njord Maritime Solutions, Rasmus stepped up to the plate as head of the company with a dream that would change the industry forever: a family car that a customer can walk away from. Through his leadership that dream became a reality through the FB-396; a car that introduced state-of-the-art safety technology that is still used across the industry to this day.

From the very first car to the FB-414 Rasmus instituted a legacy of uncompromising safety, mechanical structural integrity, and robust utility. He believed that an automobile should not merely be a luxury for the few, but a dependable, protective sanctuary for the everyday family. It was his steadfast focus on building a resilient vehicle that laid the bedrock for the financial and industrial powerhouse Njord has become.

In honor of the man who founded and flourished the Njord Automobile family, the following protocols will be conducted in observance:

FLAGS AT HALF MAST
All flags at the Njord Company Headquarters, Reimsboden and Zellhof production facilities, and the Njord Vehicle Testing Facility will be placed at half mast for the remainder of the week.

MOMENT OF SILENCE
On Friday, 21 June at 11:00, a whistle will sound across all assembly lines. We ask all factory personnel, office staff, and management to observe a traditional three-minute moment of silence. Production machinery will be temporarily halted during this time.

BOOK SIGNING
A formal book of condolences will be placed in the main lobby of the Reimsboden headquarters starting tomorrow morning. All employees are welcome to sign it and share their memories. The book will subsequently be presented to the Hagerström family.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Rasmus’ family, friends, and colleagues whom stood by his side during our company’s earliest days.

1975 - Making Compromises

Many members of Njord Automobile had a pretty good idea of the values and direction Rasmus Hagerström established from the company's founding and his tenure; many of those values were attributed to the man and still practiced to this day. However, apart from a tiny handful of the most senior employees who had joined just as Hagerström was retiring in 1961, there was no-one left at the company beyond Caesar Bendel himself who knew Rasmus Hagerström the person.

The company had multiple events over a few weeks to practice remembrance of the old CEO, though with little to really remember most employees - especially the overworked factory technicians - used each event as an excuse to get a break without looking like a slacker to their overbearing production managers.

The grind did not stop at the factories, either. In the product development department CPO Esben Kristoffersen’s team were hard at work finalizing the pre-production prototype of the compact Njord which had been internally nicknamed “Project Karve.” COO David Lutz’s team of directors, supervisors, and manufacturing and industrial engineers were finishing up making the final tweaks to the Reimsboden vehicle and powertrain assembly plants for the ND Series facelift. Even with the workload for the Design and R&D departments starting to ramp down as Project Karve transitioned towards the manufacturing engineers, Head of R&D David Vaartjes was rarely found outside of the R&D facility.


Electronic Embers Taking Fire

When David Vaartjes began tinkering with the KOP 30MAX computers in Njord's design studio, he quickly became obsessed with the technology. Starting out with basic commands that would print a green "HELLO WORLD" on the cathode ray monitor screen, Vaartjes' programming grew more complex at a rapid rate. After permanently borrowing the computers from the design center and installing them in his R&D lab, he quickly found practical uses from his new work hobby.

One month he was processing huge amounts of strain-gauge data from water tunnel tests - something that used to take weeks now being done overnight. Soon after he was already developing a basic operating system that could issue commands automatically based on measured inputs from analogue sensors hooked into the computer.

Lead Powertrain Engineer Immanuel Pukki got word of some of the projects David was coming up with experimenting with computers. He was impressed and challenged David to see if he could use his programming to optimize engine fuel delivery.

Over the next few months David researched methods of incorporating electronically-controlled actuators into fuel delivery systems until he finally had a working concept. It was a single point twin-throttle unit with two fuel injectors mounted in front of the throttle body, each injector fitted with wiring that lead out of the intake and connected to a KOP 30MAX personal computer.

With help from Immanuel, the prototype computer-injection unit was fitted to a 4CCT engine along with sensors that measured throttle position, engine RPM, and oxygen levels post-combustion. All of the sensors were connected to a personal computer that sat away from the engine with programming that would read the input data, then output a varying electronic charge that changed fuel injection rates based on a premade fuel map.

Initial results from the experiment weren’t too promising. Power delivery hadn’t improved much over the baseline four-barrel carburetor, but the benefits weren’t lost on the engineers. Fuel delivery of the electronic injector was much more controllable than the carb, meaning better fuel optimizations could be made to improve emissions and fuel economy. Also noticed was that the engine ran considerably smoother when cold, not requiring a choke to start or keep idling.

The experiment was a success in proving that with size and cost optimizations to the computing module itself electronic controls had their place in the future of automobile design. From this point was a boom in researching technological advances within the R&D facility that applied computer controlled systems: including prototypes for antilock braking controllers, on-board vehicle diagnostics readers, and electronically-actuated driver protection devices.


'76 Njord ND-Series Facelift

The ND Series was facelifted for the 1976 model year, bringing a whole host of changes in response to the tightening safety and emissions regulations coming out in Hetvesia, Gasmea, and Fruinia. The engineers did an excellent job on this one by managing not only to meet the new regulations with minimal downgrades but also managed to make the car an overall more desirable package with the latest technological advances.

The biggest changes come with the powertrain. Gone is the two-barrel carburetor, in its place a four-barrel with a much leaner air-fuel tune for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Valve timing has also been greatly retarded and cylinder compression dropped slightly from 8.2:1 to 8:1. The two-way catalytic converter fitted to the exhaust utilizes a platinum-coated ceramic honeycomb to catalyze carbon monoxide (CO) molecules into less harmful carbon dioxide (CO2); it also reduces the amount of unburnt fuel expelled from the engine.

Fitting the catalytic converter would mean the engine was required to run on unleaded fuel instead of the 92 RON leaded previously used - which considering the rapidly rising availability of unleaded 91 RON across the Western nations meant this would be a non-issue. Many nations such as Hetvesia and Fruinia were already predicted to release policy outlawing the use of lead additives in fuel given political trends to reduce emissions and studies linking lead to acute toxicity when inhaled.

Despite the numerous emission control systems and leaning out of the engine the 4CCT-20B had a barely noticeable impact to power, going from a peak of 72 kW (98 hp) to 70 kW (95 hp) @ 5,000 RPM. Swapping the 4-speed to a 5-speed manual transmission also helped hide the tiny drop in power with 0-100 km/h (62 mph) capable in 11.6 seconds, 0.1 seconds slower than the pre-facelift model. The 3-speed automatic stayed as an optional extra for the ND-4202 and ND-5202, but performance suffered with comparisons between pre and post facelift models seeing as much as a 0.7 second increase in 0-100 km/h (62 mph).

For the 1974 model year Njord was required to install big, tacky rubber bumper guards on the front of all Gasmean domestic market ND Series cars in response to 5 mph bumper regulations. Thankfully the designers and engineers at Njord have come up with a better solution for the facelifted ND Series. Massive chrome bumpers front and rear with plastic cladding to protect from scratches, and a larger wraparound to accommodate angular impacts both front and rear. Fortunately for Njord, the massive steel bumpers actually complimented the stately styling very well, with even some employees thinking the new bumpers looked better than the old ones before the rubber guards. The new bumpers would be fitted to not just Gasmean market cars but Hetvesian and Fruinian domestics as well.

Njord’s new water tunnel was utilized to develop semi-clad plastic undertray fittings that reduced drag caused by the engine and gearbox. The new attachments made a massive impact despite the slightly less aerodynamic 5 mph impact bumpers disturbing exterior airflow, with the pre facelift ND-4202’s 0.427 Cd dropping to 0.373 Cd on the new model. Along with massive reductions in emissions fuel economy also improved; the ND-4202 now got 9.68 L / 100 km (24.3 mpg), a 0.46 L / 100 km (1 mpg) improvement.

On emissions, the previously mentioned optimizations were more than enough to get the ND-4202 and ND-5202 to pass WES 6 emissions standards; this was not the case for the ND-5204.

The raised ride height, factory roof rack, knobby all-terrain tires and heavy 4WD system made getting the ND-5204 very difficult to pass emissions regulations. The company planned to introduce an automatic transmission option with the facelift, however the parasitic losses from the torque converter were too much for passing WES 6 and thus had to be abandoned; this still left the problem that the manual ND-5204 still didn’t pass.

With few options left, the engineers decided to downgrade the ND-5204’s tires from knobby all-terrains to a less aggressive hard rubber tire which reduced rolling resistance at the cost of off-road traction. Njord’s engineers weren’t happy with the compromise, but it it had to be done to squeeze the ND-5204 past the WES 6 standards: passing HC by 54.8%, CO by 38.3%, and NOx by 1.6%. Telling themselves that salesmen would refit all-terrains once sold to the dealers helped keep the engineers sleeping at night.

Lastly were minor improvements to creature comforts. The rack and pinion steering has gained a engine-driven hydraulic pump to assist in steering at low speeds. The addition did reduce road feel, though considering the ND Series was anything but a sports car the compromise was worth it for the added ease of parking. The reduced wind noise from the aforementioned semi-clad undertray also made the interior much quieter when driving at highway speeds.


Trims and Options

The same trims from the pre-facelift ND Series are still offered for the facelift. Colors are the same as well with two new options, Elfenben and Kunglig Plommonlila.

Project Karve Leak

Jensen Newman - Njord’s Chief Marketing Officer - walked through the front door of Tiso’s Barber Shop at the corner of Sturegatan and Eksholmsvagen in downtown Reimsboden. Entering the building there was barely any relief from the hot noon sun outside.

“Bella lì, Jensen! Welcome, welcome!” It was Jensen’s barber, an older man who had immigrated to Hetvesia long ago, though you wouldn’t be able to tell from his thick Northern Fruinian accent.

“We’re a bit behind at the moment. Will likely be about 20 minutes or so,” said the Fruinian barber.

“That works,” replied Jensen. As he walked towards the front waiting area he jutted, “Though if that’s what you call a cut you might need an hour.”

“Wait, what?” blurted the Fruinian’s customer.

“Watch your mouth there, Jensen. Your next in this chair,” snarked the barber.

As the barber continued with the customer’s haircut Jensen sat down in a bright red armchair in the front waiting area and picked up a magazine.

It was a copy of Real Shift, a car magazine with a sexy wedge-shaped supercar on the front cover. Flipping through the magazine Jensen looked at ads for performance car parts, read reviews on the latest luxury sedans from Hetvesia’s luxury automakers, and took note of an article that showcased a scenic road he could ride on later. Eventually while his eyes were still browsing the magazine he became preoccupied with his thoughts about work.

Njord still had just under a year before Project Karve was scheduled to be revealed to the public. It was going to be one of the biggest, most expensive campaigns the company had planned yet, and it needed to be carefully planned to ensure hype around the car would be controlled lest risk getting swamped in preorders that the company could not fulfill. Jensen thought about the budget already spent over the last few months in preparation for the first even scheduled in 6 months - a multi-million dollar reveal at the Zeilwies University of Applied Sciences - when flipping the next page he got a glimpse of a very familiar car.

It was Njord’s car. Project Karve. Somehow a spy photographer got an image of the car and had it published in Real Shift.

Jensen broke into a cold sweat that became even colder when he began reading the text associated with the shot. The magazine suspected that Njord was going to launch a high-performance sports car based on the appearance, and predicted that it would come with a powerful straight six.

This was not good. Jensen knew Project Karve was anything but a sports car. It had the same basic inline 4 as the ND series and was in no way designed to be a sports car. But to have the press advertising the car as such - and this early - could mean losing sales on the current ND-Series as customers anticipate the new car. And all the funding that has already been spent on the planned marketing campaign had effectively been wasted. And when customers and reviewers get their hands on the car and expectations are not met… then what?

Jensen gulped. “Fuck.”

Ooh.. This is going to be a bit dramatic. Based on its shape, is it inspired by the SAAB 900 ?

I really like your campaign. If you don’t mind some criticism, a four-barrel carburetor is total overkill for a two-litre engine. In real life, there were practically no production cars with this setup. A two-barrel is a much better and cheaper choice. Of course, if you try to reach WES6 on two-barrel, you will lose more power than on a four-barrel but it will be more fuel efficient, reliable and realistic than a 4-barrel carburetor
