RCS1: Group 6 Prototype-Sports Cars (Racing Challenge Series) ((FINAL REVIEWS NOW OUT!))

I dig it but in my opinion seem more like the later Can-Am race cars of the early 70s

Thank you all for entering! The entries closed around 8:38 ago, I will do my best if I have time this weekend to begin on the judging, but it’s very likely it will take a while as I have not been pre-judging as some hosts do!

TARSKE HG832 SP

For the 1967 racing season, Tarske unveiled their new model, the HG832. The body was a complete departure from its predecessor, with a closed roof (a first for Tarske sports prototypes) and a slick design. A key feature of the HG were the tall side intakes needed to cool the larger 5.2L V8 at the back. These intakes were unpopular with the drivers at first, since they blocked the view from the side mirrors, which had to be moved to a higher position.

Another significant change was in the interior. The HG832 was designed with Le Mans in mind, so the driver seat was moved to the right. Since most corners are right handers and the pits are at the right, this layout allowed for both easier sighting of the apex and faster driver changes.

Unlike its predecessors, the HG832 was also made available for privateers that were interested in racing at the top level of endurance racing without the struggles of having to build your own car.

Specs

Engine Layout: 5246cc V8
Valves Actuation: SOHC-4 (32 Valves)

I wanted an open top and everyone else is using the 60’s body, so i thought id try something different.
does still need a livery because rn its kinda plain, but for the purpose of the event, its done.

Reviews Part 1: Bins

@Vento - Realism bin

To start, the windscreen wiper is in a very strange position, rare being on the roof but not unheard of I don’t think? It is however clipping the body, among looking really out of place and “un-race-car-y” aerodynamics wise (which is rather hilarious considering it’s the fastest entry for top speed lol)

The random plonking of the reflector/indicator which clips visibly through the wheel arch is certainly something. Also bright red gloss wheels make the car go faster! (Maybe)

The headlights have components way too modern for 1967, single bulb lights with no daytime running/additional lights in the single clusters is totally unheard of for this time period.

Overall the design is quite a fixture-bashed mess if I’m brutally honest, it totals up at 28 fixtures which is probably the new default for “5 fixture wonder” memes. Similarly to Rambow, this build features the illusive 4vpc DOHC: For reference, 1967 was the first year Cosworth used 4vpc DOHC in F1, a year later Toyota developed a 4vpc DOHC for Group 7 racing, unless the engine was a pinnacle of technology spam and build quality it was unlikely a Group 6 would use one.

In summary, it lacks the quality, realism and attention to detail. I would definitely take notes on the entries which have passed the bins stage, until then tho:

@theduck1347 - Binned: Exceeded maximum width hard limit of 2050mm (2.11m) & realism

I would probably consider it a realism bin too, a 7.7L V16 4vpc DOHC is on the extreme side for sure, but it also has over 7% brake fade on the front brakes. Alongside the styling being at a similar tier to Vento and Rambow’s but with a bit more design and effort put in.

@Gravity - 3 front wing fixtures & 3 rear wing fixtures

It breaks my heart, but sadly the joint first best design broke the rules with wing fixtures so is sadly in the bin.

@spruse220 - No file submitted on forums through DM

This is unfortunate as it is the member’s first post so they can’t DM I don’t think? Either way:

@Alexism87 - Cannot import as Automation error: Car file was saved with an older version of Automation

Sadly the version of the car I could not access it, it may be in an older version or may have been in the open alpha build? I’m not sure.

@Rambow - Realism bin

Non-functional vents on the rear don’t really make much sense and would just result in pockets of air dragging the vehicle, I’m no aerodynamicist but this is not something that would really benefit performance or handling :thinking:

I can understand the idea being to emulate Chaparral on the rear with the fan layout, but it ends there, nothing behind the vents to illude any sort of suction-to-the-ground system, so it just looks like massive fans (to boost propulsion forwards???)

Overall the design looks too plain on the exterior but not in a good way, the huge front lights look a bit too extreme, the wheels are 6-lug (common on SUVs, Trucks, not racing cars), the rear is basically an empty plane of nothingness beyond the fans and taillights with no shaping or anything to extenuate design. The lack of roof is also pretty uncommon for Group 6, although not unheard of in the late Group 6 cars (such as the Alfa and Chaparral).

Also I should mention the very strange layout of a Mid-Transverse 3.4L V8 4vpc DOHC with mechanical fuel injection. I can’t off top of my head think of many mid-transverse sports/super/racing cars for this period other than the Miura.

In summary, it lacks the quality, realism and attention to detail. I would definitely take notes on the entries which have passed the bins stage, until then tho:

I would like to thank you all for your patience for the first round of reviews, I will probably try include more detail in the next stage of reviews (which means it may take a few weeks or so). If you would like some advice on how to improve your designs to avoid realism bins, my advice would be wholeheartedly to plan ahead, look at references for inspiration and insight into what you’re creating (such as I included in the brief excessivly), and most of all have patience and don’t be afraid to ask for advice to help grow as a creator.

wht if i update my version rq

Sadly I would be opposed to it, as visually & engineering wise it could be further enhanced beyond the deadline which would be unfair to other competitors, in future however if it is not compatible, I will open files early to check, as this has never occurred before when I’ve hosted!

the “vents” are bodywork i couldn’t remove, because cutouts couldn’t get to it, and the fans are for cooling, (with yes the intention to LOOK like the chaparal, but not to suck the car down in any way).

For the engine: its supposed to be based upon a factory car that used the same layout.

as for the design being “plain”, its a customer car, they are supposed to put their own livery on it.
yes i know the design is simple, but adding more just didn’t make sense here. its supposed to be a lightweight sports car, not a production vehicle.

also, on the issue of wheels, they are based on these which were a common design for sportscars at the time:

Never wound up finishing this, good luck to all the contestants that didn’t get binned!

You mis-interpreted it, I mean the car is plain not the livery, it is too basic of a design, doesn’t really have much going for it in aesthetical sense, in comparison to the other entries especially. Furthermore, find me a sports car with actual 6 lugs from factory other than a Dodge Viper, because they basically do not exist to my knowledge.

In my view it looks more like a 70s or 80s design (and one that could, somehow, live on until the 90s, if only just), what with its angular front end, so I think it may look too new for this challenge.

Older Cadillac CTS-V’s had 6 lugs (This example is from 2006)

And some old 60’s Pontiacs, like the Ventura and the bonneville had 8 lugs on certain trims! (1962 Pontiac Bonneville shown)

Those were not dedicated sports cars, so they don’t count as examples in the context of this challenge.

Well the viper is, and I don’t think nitpicking about lug count is very fair since we cannot control how many lugs the devs decide to put on a specific wheel, and 6 lugs on a wheel for this application has been done IRL (granted very rarely).

The wheels in question are ones I have modelled, they actually come with alternative lug patterns too lol:

To be fair I try not to use mods, so I wouldn’t have known. :person_shrugging:

Damn fair enough on the bin i did make it too wide (completely forgot about that) but as far as the engineering i just wanted to see how wild i could take it will being around budget ( at 55k) so i used my super luxurious with a hint of sportiness Jabberwock brand who almost exclusively deal with v16s
