Survival of the Fittest [1989]finished]

I got about a month left before my next work deployment, so I’ve decided to run this now. But note the deadline is SHORT.

Two years ago a very tragic accident took numerous lives and a very close to us spiritually Group B has been disbanded. But we are used to surviving, this is what our sport is all about. Following long talks with FIA and re-writing our technical reglament, as well as having to skip an entire 1988 season (we on the forum skip a lot more, dont we? ), the competition is now back!

We survive where Group B has fallen. Welcome back to

#Welcome the the annual “Survival of the Fittest” shootout 1989
This is a multi-stage competition. Each stage will concentrate on a few key aspects of your car, and each stage, only the winners advance to the next stage, till there’s only 1 car left standing. Your car will have to be fast, tough, safe, economical and comfortable, but not all those aspects weight in as much as the others.

#Technical reglament

Car eligibility : any 1989 street legal vehicle, built to “Category 4” standards.

##Steet legal category 4 checklist:

Must include headlights, taillights, blinkers, reverse light (Well at least try to make these cars look good for the blurbs, people)
Safety : 45 or higher (New safety standard for FIA homologated vehicles)
Fuel provided : Ron 95 (Provided and must be used by all teams)
Catalytic converter : Required (new demand from the green party)
Loudness : under 50 (Unchanged from earlier)
Tires : Semi slicks and off road not allowed, max +5 tire quality
Tire width : 295mm or narrower
Engine : No positive quality sliders allowed
Maximum power to weight ratio : 500hp/1000kg

###List of banned tech : Ladder chassis, Fiberglass body panels, VVT, Water to air Intercoolers, Carburettors, Drum brakes, Traction Control.

Total cost max is ##$10,000

###Economy rule
Your fuel tank in liters equals 5% of your car’s weight in KG. If your car weighs in at 1 ton, your fuel tank is 50 liters. Fuel economy stages are done at a set speed, and are calculated based on automation’s rating for economy at that speed

###Reliability rule
Each point of reliability under 50 is allowed, but penalized by increasing your stage time by 2%. This means you have had some technical trouble along the way, and had to either endure them or stop and fix the problem.
example - your lap time is 1:40, which is 100 seconds. Your reliability is 40, which means 10 under required 50. Your penalty is 10 x 2% = 20%. Meaning your lap time is now 120 seconds exactly, or 2 minutes. After the completion of the stage each point of reliability under 50 is doubled and deducted. If you had a 45 reliability car, and you finish the stage your new reliability will be 35 points (50-45 = 5 points. 5 x 2 = 10. 45 reliability - 10 = 35). If your reliability reaches 0 you are out of the race.

###Offroad / rally stages
Since we don’t really have offroad stages, we will be using tracks that are twisty and tight with the time doubled. If we use nordschelife (which your car does in 10 minutes) as an offroad stage than the gravel nordschleife will take twice as long (10x2 = 20 minutes per lap). Each point of your off-road rating removes 0.5% of your final time. If you do 10 minutes exactly on the Green hell and your offroad rating is 10, then your offroad time will be 10min x 2 = 20 min. 10 rating = 5% decrease of stage time (which is 1 minute exactly). Final result is 19 minutes. For these stages each point of “Offroad” stat will remove 0.5% of damage dealt to your car set for the stage, to a total of completely negating the damage received.

###Damage
Each stage takes a toll on your car (stated for each stage separately), damaging it, including penalties to reliability, speed and driveability.
example - your car enters a 5% stage with 50 reliability, and 50 drivability. In the next stage both these stats will drop by 5%, meaning 47.5 for each. As soon as your car’s reliability drops under 50, you will receive 2% time penalty for each point of reliability under 50 as per reliability rule. All mentioned reliability is cars’ Average reliability stat, not Engine reliability

###Battle stages
8 cars stage for 1vs1 racing.
The qualification for battle stages is posting the best lap. After the qualifications the grid takes following setup

1st vs 8th
2nd vs 7th
3rd vs 6th
4th vs 5th

At which point 1 vs 1 battles commence

###Battles
If the two cars are separated by less than a second per lap, then the battle commences. In battle 1vs1 drivablity stat acts as a multiplier between them, each 1 point of driveability takes off exactly 0.5% off your lap time (Cars are using each others’ slip stream and becoming faster both)

###Rain and night stages
When racing in harsh weather conditions or at night or both, it’s important to concentrate on the road, not on reigning in your car at every second. For a stage with bad weather conditions or night each point of your drivability will result in 0.5% decrease of your stage time. If both rain and night are present on the track at the same time then each point of drivability will result in 01% decrease of stage time.

###Tire suitability of tires at stages
Unsuitable tires will increase your time by a set amount of percent
Asphalt : Sports compound - no penalty / Medium compound - 5% / Hard compound - 10%
Asphalt + Gravel : Sports compound - 5% / Medium compound - no penalty / Hard compound - 5%
Gravel : Sports compound - 10% / Medium compound - 5% / Hard compound - no penalty

###Repair rule
Your repair budget is the money left over after building your car. So if your car costs 9000 and the budget is 10000, then you have 1000 to spend on your car. Each 1 point of reliability can be repaired by spending 100$. You may only repair your car once, and you can not repair it to a stat higher than 50 reliability.

And we’ve started
Here’s a results pic along with an introduction. Im not about to make a habbit of it

#Stage 2
Kinnekulle rally cross track. 20 laps down it was time to see who’s got the best lap time. Everybody except Squidhead and Madrias managed to piggyback onto somebody else for some slipstream effect, improving their times drastically

So… Let’s recap
9th : Madrias
Yellow is the colour of failure… unless you’re airjordan
7.04 seconds behind

8th : Squidhead
Was showing promise up to the point when people started leaving him for dead at turn 1
7.9 seconds behind

7th : Crailler
There’s nothing to worry about… yet
1.04 seconds behind

6th : JohnWaldock
Owes himself a 10 second car
3.24 seconds behind

5th : TR8R
SOF 89 hope that the green party will be pleased lies with him. Broken, shattered, destroyed
0.14 seconds behind

4th : Dragawn
Yall got more of them roof lights?
3.64 seconds behind

3rd : Stensen
I refuse to leave miami beach for anything but dirty finnish rallycross tracks
0.74 seconds behind

2nd : Phale
The innovative idea of putting the engine on the inside
0.03 seconds behind

1st : Airjordan
Causing involuntary banana cravings since 1989

#Round 3
Streets of detroit 1vs1 battles

1: Madrias vs Airjordan.
Airjordan takes the win with 1:47.26 vs 1:52.27
[I regulary punish my enemies with my banana]

2: Squidhead vs Phale
Phale walks it with 1:47,04 vs 2:02,71
[They named the wrong guy “fail”]

3: Crailler vs Stensen
Stensen beats Crailer with 2:02.72 being no match for 1:47,17 [Pistons’n’Sparkplugs needed some Speed’n’Grip]

4: JohnWaldock vs Dragawn
Another walkover, Dragawn takes it with 2:04,33 failing against 1:43.51
[Nice car, what’s the retail on one of those?]

5: TR8R takes a single run with 1:57,35
[The lone wanderer, of vault whythehellarewegreenwearentsupermutantsyet]

#Round 4
The weather in australia is chilly, but dry, so we go in, knowing that drivability will only be half the factor it could.

The results are as follows

  1. Airjordan @ 47,62 [serving Gru since 1975]
  2. Phale @ 47,82 [#Engineoninside]
  3. Stensen @ 48,65 [I’m rally crossing in a supercar, your argument is invalid]
  4. TR8R @ 50.3 [TMNT called, they want their barrel of mutagen back]
  5. Madrias @ 50.68 [Made it on the laurels of the banana years gone by]
  6. JohnWaldock @ 52.8 [Ron don don]
  7. Dragawn @ 53,01[The extra lights are just a penis extension. Exhaust backfires symbolize the burning sensation]
  8. Crailler @ 54.9 [Making a delta integrale where Mega track is king]
  9. Squidhead @ 57.22 [It’s a long running tradition to fail as a racer]

Madrias hears a faint rattle coming from the gearbox. It disappears once you press the clutch pedal.
TR8R has noticed his car not really tracking straight, as well as a loose play int he steering.

#Round 5
With the weather being sunny and awesome over Greece, we set off at full scale rally stage. Here’s the time outputs

  1. Phale 504.58
  2. Dragawn 517.83
  3. Airjordan - 519.89
  4. Stensen 525.87
  5. TR8R - 543.58
  6. Crailler -546,29

And we 're losing
JohnWaldock - 554,44
Madrias - 598,71
And yes, you’re getting one snarky comment per day, not per round.

As of now

TR8R Feels serious trouble as he steers the car and it is not as responsive as it usually is
Crailler feels weird vibrations and hears a faint knocking sound from the engine
Airjordan notices problems shifting into gears, as well as some grinding noises
Stensen hears a faint grinding noise from the front of the car
Dragawn hears a weird whirring sound from the fuel tank, the car’s engine isn’t very responsive aswell
Phale hears knocking noise from the back of the car

#Round 6

The weather at pikes is not what we’d call ideal for racing. In other words it feels like there’s a bucket in the sky… a very big bucket, and it’s been tipped over. The drivability factor is at full effect for this race. But before we could start we must mention that

A. Crailler has opened up his hood and carefully plastered bandaids all over the engine.
B. Dragawn has fully replaced his fuel pump, filter and the whole fuel delivery system. To find out that while they were to give up the ghost, the amount of damage on them could’ve had them running for 3 more stages easily.

And now, the race results

  1. Stensen [It’s like a supercar, but reliable. So it’s officially a hot hatch]
  2. Phale [This car has been converted to be the Mod Max in 2015]
  3. Airjordan [Smooth racing over rough terrain]
  4. Dragawn [Panic mode repairs, ACTIVATE]
  5. TR8R [This is my lemon. It is green. There are a lot like it but this one is mine]
  6. Crailler [And I’ll walk home 500 miles]

Of which we are losing the last 2 places as we move on to Bathurst for a 4 way race.

As of now

Airjordan 1st, 3rd and 5th gears are completely gone and have been replaced by loud noises
Stensen Along with the grinding noise, the car seems to started pulling to the right
Dragawn Fuel problems are now gone… just to be replaced by slight knocking sound when you turn the wheel
Phale feels that the diff does not lock anymore, or actually runs the left half axle.

#Round 7
The morning weather at mount panorama is cloudy, but dry, it’s cold, but no real rain to speak of, so we start our race with both great weather and visibility! Great times ahoy…

When I say “great times ahoy” I mean "we get to watch:
Airjordan has Tried to figure out what was wrong with his transmission, but the budget cuts on repairs left him only being able to replace the oil, it did not help much, but at least now all the metal shavings were on the outside of the car.

We were expecting a very close race, with a lot of battling and slipstreaming, but sadly, this was not the case. Cars, subjected to a much more harsh beating than always, and drivers in different states of being beaten by the 6 rounds before that were just in it for the long haul at the speeds they could muster.

The race was won by Dragawn [Peugeot dakar team has just soiled their pants]
Followed 32 seconds later by Stensen [HYPERCAR HYYYYYPE]
In third position we have Phale, lagging behind by 18 seconds [All that repair budget will be spent on an AA truck]
And in fourth…well… nobody has finished in fourth, since AIrjordan’s gearbox has exploded completely, sending cogs and oil all over the track just 2 laps before the finish. [OH, how the mighty have fallen]

The finale will be decided between Dragawn and Stensen, who will undergo mandatory repairs before the final round if they haven’t yet used up their repair tokens.

As of now
Dragawn’s car is pulling violently to the sides, randomly, without much concern as to which way the wheels are pointing
Stensen’s car is pulling to the right on acceleration, as well as it seems to be missing a half axle at the front.

#Finals

Stensen and Dragawn both made it to the finals, where we had a battle on our hands. The winner of this round would win the whole event. Before the event started Stensen has used a couple of band-aids and a heart shaped tattoo to try and hold his car in one bit. And with those highly technological repairs done we set off…

Well when I say “we” i mean “they”, and when I say “they” I actually mean “he”. He as in Dragawn. The launch off the line ripped stensens’ front end just exploded, leaving his car crippled and only rear wheel drive. The damaged diff ripped off from the mounts sending hits through the drivetrain and the body. It only took half a lap for the poor car to destroy itself beyond any repair. Dragawn finished the race alone.

Well done and no cookie this year. This year we got something much better.

Well, we certainly have no shortage of competitions now.

hmm… too new to base off the generation communitasia this falls in, but too old for anything good i currently have :frowning: welp, time to start experimenting

EDIT: by total cost $10,000 is that overview tab or market tab?

overview tab, like last time

This fuel thing is a b*tch. Already 2 cars thrown in the trashcan. Good thing that it’s a total of 2 hours work maybe.

With the eye on the failure of 6 years ago, I have returned. Not only with an actual company this time, but also with a car that should have a lot less trouble to get somewhere. At least that is the intention.

Pistons 'n Sparkplugs Automotive, PnS Automotive for short (yes, this is intentional), proudly presents:

The PnS Quattro FP!

Where '83 car lacked power, design, a nice color, a good driver, and basically anything that matters, the Quattro FP got most of that fixed. The biggest improvement is the driver. The hobo that lives in the abandoned ally down the street is no longer behind the wheel. We had tryouts this time and now our driver is the guy who kept the car on the track without damage. I forgot his name though…
Anyways, this car does lack LED strips. We have to assume that the time machine our future company is going to invent broke down after the '83 trip.

We’re not playing around this time. Clear a path, or we shall clear it at your expense. This is the Storm Road Warrior.

All 3 tyre compounds are not equally usable with this kind of stages…is it planned this way or is it coincidence?

I hope you are warming up humour part of your brain because there are some expectations to fulfil…

First Order Automotive have always had a great fondness for the Survival of the Fittest Challenges throughout the years.

Our first Cruzer should have done better…unfortunately we let a bean-counter near the design shop. That car was like a dog turd in Christmas paper…looked really nice but stunk underneath it all.

We revamped the Cruzer and re-entered. Unfortunately it got swallowed up by a pack of cars that appeared to have fitted warp engines for the last lap.

We are here again to proudly present our…Erm…Huh? WTF IS THAT?? THAT IS NOT A RALLY PREPPED CAR!!! What do you mean it has a Rallye engine??? It’s a V12 FFS!!! Didn’t you READ the race spec…we’re going to get annihilated…AGAIN!!

Oh well, we might as well enter it as it’s here…sigh

This is sooo right

May I Present the JHW Quatermass. my entry is probably a teeny weeny lil bit different, as it doesn’t use a turbo, but a 250bhp I6. may not win here, but i will rep the NA lot

I’m ready to defend my title

Sadness, I don’t think I’ll have time to enter this round. Until next time!

Some reasons why certain components cannot be used in this challenge: VVT and traction control are new tech in 1989 and far from fully developed; ladder frames, drum brakes and carburetors are obsolete by then; fiberglass is too fragile (and aluminum panels are almost as light), and water-to-air intercoolers are too bulky and costly (air-to-air intercoolers are allowed, though).

Engine quality of 0 (normal) for each component is okay by me. It keeps costs down and it is still possible to make good power while preserving reliability anyway… by using a big normally aspirated engine. If you think you can get even better results using a turbo and an air-to-air intercooler, though, you might as well give it a shot.

With a total cost ceiling of $10,000 in the overview tab, it will be possible to use quality sliders anywhere other than the engine… in moderation. Even if tire quality is set to 0 (the default value) one can make them as wide as the regulations and your car’s wheel arches allow if the wheel diameter is small enough.

Is there are any way we can tell if our cars are economical enough, or will we just have to look at the economy stat (L/100km consumption given in automation * 5 < fuel tank size) and pray?

This tells you that you can take a look in detailed->economy tab your consuption at 120kph and calculate if you will go far enough.

cheers!
