The 2018 Meatball run - Day 2 4PM-7PM

“I’m scared,” Fuzz chirped only half-mockingly. “I mean, what exactly do they put on pizza here in Sweden?”
Hank glanced over the menu, then looked up a couple terms in his translator. “A lot of shrimp, apparently.”
Kyle and Fuzz twisted their expressions in a display of disgust. “Oh, man that sounds gross,” Fuzz replied.
“I mean, I love shrimp, but on pizza?” Kyle added.
Hank continued on. “Doesn’t look like they ALL have it. Here we go. Mamma Mia. Pretty close to a Supreme back home.”
It was easy for them to agree on something so familiar.

Honestly speaking, if italians knew how weird things you can get on pizzas in Sweden, they would start world war 3, 4 and 5 against us…

TEAM HILLBILLY ROLLERS

Now playing: Eddie Meduza - Jeany Jeany

MARIE: How do you like my driving, huh?
ANDREAS: Well, I would like it more if the snails stopped passing us?
MARIE: Passing us? Now that ugly Bogliq is in front of us again, but I know what to do…

(MOTHER OF ALL DIXIE HORN HONKS)

MARIE: Look, passing that one wasn’t hard at all! Ha! I hope we sent lots of gravel on its windshield too!

(Some time passed)

MARIE: Stupid CMV drivers, there is another one in the ditch, as usual!
ANDREAS: Hey! It’s team Kansei Dorifto! Ha, suckers! Trying to drive a track car on the road and they probably got all their driving experience from playing Xbox! Let them have their mangled wreck then.
JANNE: But Andreas, where did you get your driving experience?
ANDREAS: On my fathers Valmet of course!
JANNE: Yeah, I guess that explains your average speed on the folkrace track then (some heavy laughing)
ANDREAS: Quit drinking all the beer, give me one, I won’t be driving until tomorrow!

(pssschhhhh…)

Previous Post

Day One: 3PM - 6PM
Well, this session was not unlike the previous one; boring and with nothing to say! However this wasn’t strictly true since we had a couple of noteworthy events happen during this time…

First, we passed the Dorotea checkpoint. Not that exciting, I’ll grant you that, but were making progress and I’m hoping we’re also making good time. It gets kinda hard to tell how you’re going once the thrill of the start has worn off, but each stage passed is a landmark that’s hard to ignore! This li’l Zealot has been our faithful partner in crime so far and I don’t see this situation changing any time soon.

Second, we stopped off at Pizza Annexet at Strömsund for dinner. Wow! The Swedish people have all kinds of crazy pizza topping combinations to choose from! We tried to read the menu, which was surprisingly easy to decipher, and we ended up each getting a Vikingbat; it had Iseburgssallad, ost, kebab, gurka, tomater, fefferoni and valfrisas (helinbakad). It was tasty, despite us not really knowing what was in our food, and the meal (and rest) lifted our spirits somewhat.

The third incident happened when we were continuing on our way in the rally. Team Hillbilly Rollers, and to be more specific, their car, decided to pass us on the inside of a blind curve, showering or car with gravel, all the while blasting the mother of all dixie horns! I thought Pierre was going to have a heart attack! Thankfully nothing seemed damaged, the windscreen was fine, but it was a crazy stupid move to pull… We were going to have to be careful going forward as other teams clearly saw us as underdogs, easily cowed into submission… But I had a plan for those hillbilly punks. They better pray they don’t end up staying the night in the same place we do, or else they’ll find themselves in a sticky situation!

Team Green Gunners, Part 4

In contrast to the previous leg, this one was fairly uneventful, as the Green Gunners sped on through the Swedish countryside without incident, except for an oil top-up early on. However, fatigue was setting in and they were running low on fuel. Even so, Tom and Bob remained optimistic going into the forthcoming leg as they passed the next checkpoint.

During a dinner break, Bob began wondering about the fates of some of his rivals, when Tom rudely interrupted him:

“What on earth just happened to Kansei Dorifto? We haven’t seen them in a while…”

“They crashed out of the race after taking a corner way too fast. The crew are uninjured but their car’s trashed.”

“Serves them right - also a reminder not to push too hard, so just take it easy next time, unless circumstances dictate otherwise.”

Feeling contented, the two of them went back to finishing their dinner before returning to the road.

Team V6 Vandals

“That was some weird stuff on that pizza.” Cody said, grinning. Jake nodded, then said, “Wasn’t bad, just, as you said, weird and unexpected. Who knew they’d put shrimp on a pizza?”

Luke topped up his oil again, and this time, Jake took the hot-seat, though he gave Cody a wicked grin before taking a roll of trash-bags out from under the hatch and lined the seat with them. “I’m smart enough to think a step ahead, Cody. Can’t make Luke sit on them, he’ll shred the stupid things, but at least I don’t have to sit in a puddle.” Jake sat in the driver’s seat with the tell-tale crinkle of plastic, started their Sinistra Swift, and swiftly did a burnout leaving the pizza place.

Amy grinned as they roared through the checkpoint, their fuel-thirsty Sinistra not chugging quite as bad at speed, even though they were pretty much mid-pack. She grabbed the CB, then called out, “This is the Lady Leadfoot of the V6 Vandals, anyone out there? Just lookin’ to see what teams are out there, and if there’s been any incidents we’ve not heard of yet. Crashes, accidents, teams out, that kinda thing.”

D: “Mel! We just passed a police car!”
M: “Hmph.” Shoves the accelerator to the floor.
D: “I knew it. We’re going to jail.”
M: “Nonsense, dear. We’re just providing the officer with some entertainment. Half of those folks join the force just to have this chance.”
D: “He’s gaining on us!”
M: “Of course. Turbo Volvo vs ‘57 Tazio? No contest in a straight line.” She cut into Doro Camp Lapland, gaining distance as the Volvo braked too late and had to abort. She yanked the handbrake and spun it about, then accelerated back towards Storgatan, drifting past the police car who had now backed up and was entering the Doro Camp Lapland road. She smiled and waved at the officer. Full throttle down Storgatan, and then slid into the OKQ8 parking lot. She parked, got out, and leaned against the fender. The Volvo sped past, she waved again. The police officer pulled a handbrake turn in the road with impressive precision, then raced back into the OKQ8 parking lot. Danielle tried to make herself as small as possible inside the Tazio. The officer exited the car scowling.

M: “Hello, Officer! That was some fine driving you did just now!”
The officer seemed disarmed a bit by Melissa’s warm smile, and English language. He mentally shifted gears, readying his tirade in English when Mel spoke again. “Beautiful country around here, and lovely roads! We’re having the nicest vacation.”
Officer: “Listen, I ought to throw you in jail. Do you know how fast you were going?”
M: “Fast enough to blow the cobwebs out of this old Tazio, that’s for sure! Were we speeding? I don’t remember seeing a posted limit, but then my Swedish is… well, pretty much nonexistent, except for a phrase or two. How does one say ‘Speed Limit?’”

After a stern lecture about traffic laws and public safety, the officer issued Mel a $300 fine, a “Welcome to Sweden,” and a restaurant recommendation for the Ankis Bar.

Team Shitbox Brothers

How are these two not out of the race already?

(You know the drill with Ana’s and Alejandro’s accent).

After a whole day of driving and some minor rumor checking at local landmarks, the two brothers arrive at the Kumla hotel, ready to call it quits for the day.

Ana: “Well that was a hell of a first day. Check our position.”

Alejandro quickly checked his phone, opening his eyes.

Alejandro: “You won’t believe this. We’re leading the race.”

Ana sighed, relieved.

Ana: “Must’ve missed Bakewell when we overtaked them, but hey, first place at least. Let’s hope it all goes well.”

Alejandro: “And news don’t end there. Team Redneck bit the dust. Crashed into a moose.”

Ana: “Hope they are fine…”

Alejandro: “Yeah, hopefully so.”

And the two Brothers spent their night inside the hotel, getting ready for the next stretch of the race the following day…would they make it or would their famous curse kick in once again?

Mopey: Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrghhhhh…

Gran: Calm down George. It’s really alright.

Mopey: AAAAAaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhh…

Spanners: What did we hit? Moose? Mountain? Freight train?

Mopey: Aaaaaaaaaarghhhh…

Gran: It was a car dear, burnt out at the side of the road. I did try to avoid it but lost the backend and broadsided it.

Mopey just sits whimpering…

Spanners: Let’s have a look then.

Spanners: No real damage done Mrs E. All the important stuff is OK. I don’t think that the dents will “buff out” but I reckon I can pull the worst ones out.

Gran: Jolly good dear. We’ll stop at the next hotel.

Spanners nodding towards Mopey: I reckon the kid could do with a stiff drink.

Gran: I suppose you’re right David. I may even partake in a sherry myself.

Spanners: Only the one Mrs E, only the one!

Gran looks sheepish: Yes dear, quite rightly so.

Jake drove until about 8:30, when he stated, “Not really safe to keep driving. It’s dark, our headlights suck, and we’ve got a long day ahead of us tomorrow. Let’s get ourselves a hotel room, hope like hell this pile of junk runs in the morning.”

Amy nodded, then added, “Best to do that instead of wrecking the car. Shame the headlights are so terrible, would’ve been funny to put some distance on the other teams in the night.”

Cody had nearly fallen asleep in the back seat, and Luke was oddly silent, though was trying to judge whether they’d had the right idea or not. “Guess we’ll just hit the road early, before the other teams, then.” Luke said after a while. “Gotta catch and pass everyone we can.”

Day One: 6PM - 10PM
After having delicious Nordic pizza we pressed on. But not long after 6PM Pierre started making grumbling noises, rubbing his eyes and attempting to change the radio to something other than music that irritated him! I grabbed the rally guide and let Pierre know where we could stay the night; I chose Hotel Sydjemten, Svenstavik. It had been a long day and I too was feeling the fatigue of driving over 1000Km on unfamiliar roads so being able to stretch my legs, eat some food and sleep in a bed sounded mighty fine right now!

We settled into our room and headed down to the restaurant for dinner. It closes at 7:30PM local time so we didn’t have to deal with a big crowd. We decided on pizza again and, after dinner, we hit the sack. Tomorrow was going to be another big day, especially since I was driving, and we were too tired to be companionable with any of the locals…

Goodnight all and I’ll see you in the morning for day two of the Meatball rally!!!

Team Green Gunners, Part 5

As Tom and Bob took a well-deserved rest - their first one of the whole race, in fact - they began wondering what had happened to some of the other teams. Bob was the first of the two to note the situation he and Tom were experiencing:

“It seems that we have been forced to err on the side of caution. We were absolutely spent coming into the first rest stop, so we had to take a break at the earliest opportunity we could find.”

Tom appeared to pile on the misery at first… then surprised him with some unexpected good news. “Bob, you won’t believe this. Many other teams carried on further than we did this evening, and managed to stop later, but one of them wasn’t as fortunate. I’m hearing a rumors that a black pickup truck got trashed the instant it hit a moose at full speed. Obviously, its crew couldn’t continue after the crash.”

That seemed to lift Bob’s spirits… for now. “So that leaves us with one fewer rival to deal with. We should just carry on as usual tomorrow; there is no sign of mechanical damage yet.”

And so the Green Gunners drifted off to sleep, confident that they would make up the lost ground tomorrow.

“HI EVERYBUNNY!”, Lizzy says.
She is sitting in a hotel room. Behind her the bed is visible and through the window the night is visible.
"So yeah. Wecome to the recap of day one! Yeah we survived and BunnBrother didn’t crash into a moose, even tho that is what a lot of people are predicting. But more later. But yeah the day: It was only the first day and a lot has happend already, but before i start here is something from our sponsors:

‘Synergy 2! Synergy 2 makes sharing one mouse and keyboard between multiple computer so easy and seamless, that anyone can use it! Check it out at the link below!’

but yeah. If you are still with me, great! So yeah today we started the Meatballrun and it was quite something. How it all started and so on was already covered in my last vlog. For that just click here.
But yeah the first hours worked really good. We seen a lot of the land and the awesome nature around here.

But quite fast we had our first problem: The car overheated and we had to stop and fix it. By we i mean BunnBrother, but he did a good job! If you wanna see how he saved us click here.
But after that we managed to move again. Around noon we decided to make a stop for a driver change and get some pizza. The ones of you who follow me on my Social Medias know this already, i had some interresting pizza there. The was duck and some other sauces on it. Weird but good.
But after that it was my time to drive and it was a weird feeling driving somewhere were you never been for. Everything is familiar and it isnt. At around 4pm we had your dinner at the Big M and BunnyCuts took over. She may be a bit intro but dayum she is diffrent behind the wheel. She managed to drive us really quick to the first checkpoint at Härjedalen. Photos are on my Insta" she winkes into the camara “But yeah after that nothing really interresting happend. OH WAIT BunnyCuts managed to damage the paint in the parking lot here. She didnt see a tree and scraped it on the side. Not much but BunnBrother was ummm unamused.
And that was the day! Dont forget to share and like this video! And if you want to be always up-to-date subcribe and hit that bell! I see you all tomorrow, your bunny leader, LizzyBunny”

Team V6 Vandals

7:00 AM.

The Vandals piled into the Sinistra Swift, with Amy taking the hot-seat and Cody claiming shotgun. Luke and Jake settled into the rear seat and buckled in, before Amy turned the key.

The Swift fired up with a rattle and screech. The rattle was normal, and the screech went away once the engine had done a couple thousand revolutions, thereby ending up being considered normal anyway.

“The hell did you three do to this poor thing yesterday?” Amy asked, before giving a light sigh. “Poor V6 is all full of top-end rattles because someone doesn’t know how to shift instead of redlining the gears.”

“At least it’s the '87. If it had one of the mid-90’s SinCam engines, we’d be fucked right now. Reliable though they were, high oil-pressure would brick-shit the cams. Ever seen what happens when a Sinistra Twin-Cam engine gets one bank stuck in the High-Lift mode and the other stuck in Low-Lift? It ain’t pretty.” Cody said, chuckling. “They got it figured out by the end of the 90’s, but an early 90’s SinCam? Time bomb right there.”

“I thought they were good engines, personally.” Jake said. “Sinistra was always trying to be bleeding edge, even if it meant sacrificing some reliability to do it. SinCam was one of those things, bringing variable valve lift into the common market as early as they could. Good fuel economy, good performance, with the compromise being early units having a higher chance of failure. It’s a good overall deal if you asked me.”

“You’re not the one who had to drive one for 3,000 miles in a shitbox rally with the left bank backfiring and popping at low RPM, and no power at high RPM because the right bank wasn’t contributing.” Cody said.

“Well, to be fair,” Luke started, “you did choose that car 30 minutes before joining the rally.”

“Wasn’t by choice, I’ll say that much. Was preparing an Ardent Smoke when it decided to become its namesake. I mean, seriously, who runs the rear electrical harness right next to the fuel line?” Cody shot back.

“I doubt the manufacturer would have made that oversight at the factory. After all, we ran against one and it didn’t burn up.” Jake replied. “Might’ve been a base-model shitbox, but it stayed together long enough. You just got greedy and bought the lemon someone was hawking for $75 because you thought it’d be fun to win a prize for having the cheapest car. Instead, you had to burn that $500 budget on a 1996 Sinistra Serenade with a blown SinCam unit.”

“Dude, I thought I was safe avoiding the '95 with the paint-shaker triple by getting the Boxer-based LC 2.0. How was I to know they failed asymmetrically, and that the LC had plastic intake manifolds that could shatter?” Cody whined.

“They weren’t fucking plastic.” Amy spat. “Not much better, admittedly, but at least Old Man Sinistra had the sense to use cast aluminum. Hell, they were halfway eco-friendly because he used recycled aluminum where he could in the LC models. They were cheap shit, but they ran. You just got hoist by your own petard, Cody, because you tried to go cheap, then tried to recover by getting the first car barely within budget.”

“So, what’s gonna blow up in our Swift, then?” Cody asked.

“It’s the '87 with the all-aluminum 3.9 liter V6. When she goes, I’m betting head-gaskets.” Amy said, only for Jake to burst out laughing.

“Clearly you’ve never pulled the head off of one of these. It’s almost fucking impossible because there’s a quarter-inch ridge-and-valley cast into the block and head. The head gasket on these things is only a formality, I’ve seen people mod 'em by pulling the gaskets off to raise the compression a little.” Jake said. “It’s like Old Man Sinistra knew about gasket problems ahead of time.”

“I’d say it’s more that he was doing that because it’d hold the engine together better on the old 90-degree V6, and it just made sense to use the same head molds for the new aluminum 60-degree one. But it meant the block needed to use the same pattern.” Luke said. “No, if Mister Sinistra knew about warped heads and blown gaskets, he’d have likely done his thing by not mixing metals.”

(Sorry about the long post. Not much for the team to talk about, so I invented a mild issue that got them talking, then ran with a few ideas. Plus, it helps for the future of junkyard challenges if there’s a few known flaws with other Sinistra cars…)
