Ooh, definitely feeling the squeeze here now. Sandwiched between entries that are faster, sportier, more drivable… This is where I have to make some hard decisions about what numbers to push and what vision to pursue.
And the big question facing me Right now is… is the premium interior really worth it???
Premium was worth it for me, gave up progressive springs, semi active dampers and the rear double wishbone was converted to semi trailing arms but it ended up with a higher comfort score than those systems added and the loss in driveability and sportiness could be recomped somewhat through more aggressive suspension tuning, premium interior definitely seemed worth the engineering time.
Yeah the idea of giving up my rear DW makes me squirm, but it may have to happen given I built a premium sedan to be comfy and easy to live with, and not light up one’s senses like a few people here have.
I am frankly skeptical but also intimidated by @szafirowy01’s bold claim of “squeezing an S6 into the budget”. I’ll just have to wait for the reviews and resist the temptation to go Strop on this.
Maybe the superior reliability of my engine will help (damn right I assume it’s superior, turbo means a penalty of at least 4 points plus less room to invest in better fuel injection…)
Rather “power says no”. I’ll try later if I could use my 4.2 “diesel” V8 staying within the economy limit, but I guess yes, even easily, as it is low-powered and tuned for economy. But if you tried 5.0 N/A V8, then yeah, that could be the problem.
With the success of the Mk I Astonish in the US market, the Astonish finally made it to Europe just in time for its second generation. The compact car had adequate sales but it was made quite clear that the European market desired a more posh model, so for it’s mid generation face lift, the 1998 Astonish B+ was introduced specifically to target younger well off businessmen. On top of the exterior face-lift, the interior was re-designed to further separate the B+ from the standard trim. An all new 4-way sound system provided by Boss, the 60/40 front bench replaced by fully independent leather seats, and a new rear bench which offers full back support and armrests for two passengers, and if needed the armrests retract so a 3rd rear passenger can fit in.
Another key feature of the B+ is its all new CM-I power plant which at this time is exclusive to the European market. The new engine features a AlSi block and DOHC cylinder head, VVL and VVT, and the now well established SenMPFI system which reliably delivers the exact amount of fuel required for all load levels. Finally an in house modified Borg Warner turbocharger has been tuned to supply peak torque at only 2300rpm and last the entire power band delivering a linear engine dynamic which aids in driving in all conditions.
The power-plant and cosmetics were not the only things upgraded with the B+, but the suspension was re-tuned and refined, the braking system received a major update with vented rotors front and back, and a re-designed 4V-250 four speed automatic which is now electronically controlled and features a two-step torque converter lockup which gives the feel of 6 speeds with normal driving by activating TC-L during 3rd gear, and again in 4th gear during light acceleration.
Let us not forget emissions, the combination of the new CM-I engine equipped with Hypereutectic pistons, advanced 3-way catalyst, and stoic-metric running cycle you will be emitting less green house gasses than most of the competition, while enjoying the premium posh you deserve for your hard work.
