The Car Shopping Round (Round 64): Tears in Heaven

So far my test car has made it into the 2:16 bracket; not sure how to make it even faster though…

Speaking of 2:15… tyre size limits (width, profile)? Any penalty for flared wheel wells?

pfft. i’m fucked. 2:23

I don’t thinok time should be so strict on that list. jet team has, as you said, some time to tweak a car before the race so how about if your car requires a lot of tweaking they should get it sooner and if its setup perfectly its ok if its there a bit later…

I made a car below 2:10, but that’s getting a bit slower to make it more sensible. I think as it’s a 24h race lap times alone are far from the full story

oi. this looks like a interesting challenge

@AirJordan forgive me for, uh, stealing your design but I couldn’t help myself - it looked so good!

Cat required?

Yes, you are right. I revisited the suggested time (2:20) and made a small adjustment to the wording.

@Dragawn You are indeed right, lap time is one of the factors, even if you make a record laptime, but at the same time burn all your fuel, and shred all the tires, you are not long for the race. (See BRC '76 for proof  )

@stm316 Ya, cats are required

Which cats?

Anyone will do, but small furry ones are the best

Any preference towards seating? does basic fulfill or is sport a significant plus?

My test car has exactly two standard seats, not four.

So technically I don’t need to lop a second or two off its ATT lap time, despite not breaking into the 2:15 bracket yet…

And:

In my case, I installed high-flow three-way catalytic converters.

i would actually prefer something more comfortable than basic seating, but if you can get it to work, go for it. It isn’t seating as such i’m deciding on, but rather the comfort stat, because if the ride is smooth, with a good setup and sensible choices overall, the comfort is higher. And if i like the car overall, seating is rather easy to switch out if need be.

@abg7 Exactly. The team will need to tinker with the car and get to know it better in the months before the race, so getting in the ballpark of 2:20 will suffice

uh so pushing sub 2:10 a la Dragawn isn’t worth it, hm? might just bring that down to 2:15

Do we get special dispensation for drivability loss due to turbo lag, or are we meant to somehow have good drivability?

so basicly my first version of my car, which was a lot more comfortable would fit too? Great news!

Originally created to compete in Group A, the 1985 SMG Taikan A-Spec retailed for a pre-markup price of $13400 and delivered 300 turbocharged horsepower to the rear wheels courtesy of a 2.5-liter straight-six. Compared with less powerful variants, the A-Spec engine gained a more aggressive cam profile and more boost.

With a five speed manual gearbox and mechanical LSD as standard as well as double wishbones at each corner, plus vented anti-lock disc brakes front and rear, this ultimate version of the Taikan was born to tackle any challenge a racetrack could throw at it - it lapped the ATT in 2:16.86, well under the maximum threshold time of 2:20.
