I do like that in the upcoming move over to the new engine, you’ll be able to see what each little thing does to the car, live.
Right now, swapping between screens constantly just boggles me to the point where I throw my hands up and just shove it out the door as a “good enough”. Usually it sells, but I’d like to be better at refining my designs.
The tight engineering time limits meant that I could not add AWD or a fully clad undertray, and using partial aluminum panels would have made my car underweight. Even so, it’s shaping up to be a strong contender so far…
On the other hand, squeezing in a geared LSD was quite tough, but I still managed it, and it seems to be paying dividends for now.
And judging by how many cars have not make the first cut so far, the selection criteria for the next round of cuts must be quite strict… I am now waiting for the next round of reviews.
11th car to be poked and prodded is the Boyd Serpent-R from @Leedar
John: Mhm, a cast iron I6 with MVOHC, interesting, i’ve never worked on such a powerunit before. And VVT too, nice It runs smooth too, but seems a little hampered by the redline. And a stock intake? On a racing engine? No my goto choice, but we’ll see what it can put to ground.
Eric: Ah, a porsche wannabe with front engine and, let’s see here… Discbrakes all around, rather big rims… and Multilink suspension on the rear. Promising. Oh, real sport seats too… Seem like i have to take it on a spin then.
(12 laps later) This one behaves really good, actually almost on par with the Bobcat, tho it’s sad they’ve set the redline short of the real power. The gearing is good, and i just get a small amount of wheelspin out of slow corners. All in all a good, solid ride.
Tom: John had some issues with the MVOHC and thought the redline were too, short. A problem confirmed by Eric, but even so he praised the car for it’s setup and good feedback. And seeing that they’ve made an economic engine, and tho it has big rim never got overzealous with the width of the tires, i think we have to keep in touch with Leedar.
12th car to be inspected is the Nisda - Miazilla from @Dragawn
John: Ok, this really looks like the real deal. Full aluminium I6 with forged internal, DOHC and VVL for topend power and economy… Pretty high boost on the turbo too. Good quality all around. And, damn, it runs smooth. I want this engine
Eric: Ok, now i never have to wonder how the bastard child of a Miata and a R33 would look… It actually looks like a composite. But on to the important stuff. Ok, thats some wide rubber there… 285’s on 16 inch rims, and AWD… this one is bound to be grippy. Vented disc all around, so stopping power is good. No undertray? Stange choice, but i don’t think it matters much. Now, let’s get in this monster.
(15 laps later) WOW!!! just WOW! The power, the grip, the speed The gearing is spot on, so is the setup, and the ride is comfortable too. It’s clearly the best car i’ve driven so far.
Tom: John wants the engine, Eric wants the car, and seeing the fuel economy, i’m in no place to contradict them. The only doubt i have is the rather high cost for the wheels and the fact that it is the most expensive car thus far. But we will definitely keep in touch with Nisda and Dragawn.
13th car up for the rundown is the Solo - Hawk SM6 from @thecarlover
John: A cast iron i6 with dual overhead cams, cast iron crankshaft, otherwise forged rods and pistons. VVT for added punch and a low boost turbo. Runs smooth, with a noticable spoolup.
Eric: Nice and wide. Aggressive almost. Big alloy rims hiding Vented discs, so there seems to be good stopping power. And a good interior too. Nice Let’s give her a spin.
(10 laps later) That’s nice… It’s down on power compared to all the cars before, tho, and it seems slightly overdamped, but just slightly so. The gearing is a little high for the track, but all in all a nice ride.
Tom: So the solo showed up late yesterday, almost a day behind the others, and while it is a good car, it has Aluminium panels, and as such we can’t enter it into the competition so we have to pass on it. Sad on such a good car.
The 14th car up for inspection is the Armada Fore Gen2 ATTC from @strop
John: So, let’s see… A cast iron I4, with MVOHC (i really have to learn how to tune these things) with forged internals and VVT and a low boost turbo. I sound a little rough but it sure has the power.
Eric: Another green, mean, streetmachine, in the guise of a hatch this time. Not really my thing, but it seems well put together. The panelfitting is good, it has magnesium rims with good quality tires and discs all around and a fully clad undertray to boot :). Interiorwise it seems a little lacking, but let’s give her a spin.
(15 laps later…) Ok, this one means business. If it hadn’t been for the earlier monster, this one had really surprised me… and in a postitive manner The handling is spot on, the ride is superb and the power is there all the way. It’s really the first Hatch i’d want to own.
Tom: Apart from Johns snag with MVOHC’s he seemed to like the engine, and Eric loved the car despite himself. And seeing the car on track, looking at the economy, the only gripe i have with the car is a somewhat high tirewear due to high camber. But we will definitely keep in touch with Armada and strop.
The next car to be scrutinized is the hummingbirdy from @stoppingpower
John: This was really a surprise. A small I4, just 1602 cc’s, DOHC, VVL and VVT… And lot’s of boost. If this doesn’t spin those skinny tires, i’ll eat my cap
Eric: Ok, what is this. It looks surprisingly much like a standard car with a hoodscoop and a lip. And John told me it frontwheeldrive. Interesting. They have sports interior at least, and oversized rollbar, even if i don’t think its necessary. Let’s do a few laps and see what gives.
(5 laps later) Ok, John doesn’t have to eat his cap at least. The boost comes on pretty hard, and those skinny tires smoked a little when i put my foot down in some places. It’s not that awful tho, and the brakes, while having slight fade, still bites after a couple of hardish laps. The undertray helps it get up to decent speed, but the gearing is way to high for the track. But i’ve driven worse cars.
Tom: John is still scratching his head, and Eric is somewhat confused by the car, not really into FWD’s and all. Slinky tires and a small engine makes me think the company missunderstood our order. We have to pass on this car.
The 16th car up for scrutiny is the Guillita from @doncornaldie
John: This one showed up late for testing. But here goes… A 2.5 litre I4 with VVL and high boost means high power and good economy, tho the engine seems hampered by the redline once again. Pretty high quality components tho. And it’s smooth for an I4.
Eric: The look is definately italian racecar. Low and sleek. And red Wide rear tires to get the power down, hmmm… solid disc could be trouble. And just the basic seating… Ah well, let’s go for a ride.
(7 laps later) Ok, that’s it… the brakes are overheated, and there’s not much i can do about it. The ride is nice and balanced tho, even if it’s slightly overdamped.
Tom: Both John and Eric is pretty pleased with the car, and so am i, but it showed up late, and seems to have some issues that needs factory attention still, so we have to pass on it (Over engineeringtime budget)
17th car never showed up due to being way over engineeringtimebudget, we have a picture, tho
18th car to be prodded and poked it the Smooth Duster SR from @AirJordan
John: A cast iron I4 in this one, DOHC, forged internals and VVT coupled with a medium boost turbo. No frills, just raw power. Nice quality components too.
Eric: Ya, this is a racecar. Red, Clean and smooth 15 inch steelrims hiding vented discs for my stopping pleasures and a budget sportinterior and oversized rollcage. Let’s see how she behaves on track.
(15 laps later) This was a real nice contrast to the last cars i’ve tested, It’s oh so slightly overdamped, but balanced and wellbehaved. The power comes on smooth as silk and the gearing is perfect for the track. Me like
Tom: John likes the no frills engine, and Eric has a new friend on the track, and looking at the numbers it seems we have another company to keep in touch with for further testing.
19th and last car out for inspection is the Flog from @laffinghyena
John: This one has a cast iron I6 with forged internals and a medium boost turbo and VVT to get the most out of it, and yet it’s again hampered by the redline. Good quality all around tho.
Eric: Yea, it’s a black hatchback… Wide rear tires tells me it’s RWD, which is nice, tho they seem a tad overdone. What more? Hmm, Multilink suspension in the rear… discs all around, dull interior. Ah well, lets see what she does on the track.
(12 laps later) That was a pleasant surprise, apart from feeling a little reigned in, the ride was really good, no trace of brakefade and it’s pretty nimble.
Tom: While it’s not the fastest car on track, it seemed controlled and Eric confirms that. The engine needed a little work according to John, but nothing he couldn’t handle. And looking at the numbers it’s both economic and rather safe for it’s size, so another firm to keep in touch with.
That concludes the first review and initial cuts. Next round will be a numbersgame, where i will compare the remaining cars against eachother from a management perspective.
The remaining cars are:
Taikan A-spec from @abg7
Dynamite Nitro from @Madrias
Scela Moto Super R from @koolkei
Bobcat from @KLinardo
Boyd Serpent R from @Leedar
Miazilla from @Dragawn
Fore Gen2 from @strop
Smooth Duster SR from @AirJordan
Flog from @laffinghyena
I knew brake fade would be the killer here. The initial car was within engineering time limits but I guess it got messed up when the panels were switched to partial alu and I didn’t have a lot of time to re-balance the car. Your reviews are quite fair man.
I see you dont have all of rear pipes mods. Duster has some upward facing for extra performance
Glad you like it and also nice read.
Wow, surprised I made the first cut.
I made a car, but couldn’t be bothered to make an ad.
Sorry but, could the result be released somewhen within today? I’m feeling that you’re taking a bit too long now
I knew @Dragawn would pull a rabbit out of the hat with what is essentially a mashup of some of my favorite early-90s sports cars… unless it turns out to be too expensive to run, in which case I might just have a better chance of winning (which I haven’t managed yet).
There is one thing about some of the entrants that irks me, though:
During the period of eligibility for this round (1985-1995), it is listed as a limited production part. How could the cars which were equipped with them not be rejected immediately for this reason, even though the rule set stated the following:
For the record, aluminium panels are not considered limited production if the model year is 2012 or later - well after the eligibility period for this challenge.
Edit: Partial aluminum (in which some, but not all, of the bodywork is made out of aluminum) is not a limited production part, and therefore can be used in this round.
Partial Aluminum came up without the limited production tag in 95, for me? That’s why I used it.
Partial alu is a different thing than full aluminium panels.
The results will be up today.
@abg7 From what i saw, there’s only one car with aluminium panels in the runnings, and i opted to review it, although i knew i was going to cut it out even if it was good. And partial aluminium is not restricted in the same way.
MANAGEMENT DESICION:
After a long discussion between the members of the JET-team we’ve come to the conclusion of having the following car cut from the list of possible purchases:
Scela Moto Super R. @koolkei
While being the 3rd fastest around the track it’s also the 2nd most thirsty car we have in the lineup and the second most costly to buy, and the two faster cars are way more economical. This coupled with high tirewear made our decision easier, tho it’s sad to see it go.
Boyd Serpent-R, @Leedar
It places midpack when coming to tracktime, and otherwise too, with decent milage, and not exceptional tirewear. The deciding factor was just that, it’s not exceptional in any way.
Flog, @laffinghyena
It’s the same thing with the Flog as with the Serpent. It’s a good and decent car but it places itself midpack and is merely decent in the competition with the other cars presented, and thus have to go.
Taikan A-spec, @abg7
It’s the second slowest car in the runnings, and has the lowest reliability of the remaining cars. And while it has a really good setup, and is pretty economical, we cannot hope that everything goes as planned and no parts fail.
Dynamite Nitro, @Madrias
Here’s to the outlier While being the slowest of the remaining car its also the thirstiest. This coupled with the limited ability to get more from the engine without blowing it up or make it even more of a fuelsink made it an easy choice.
And here comes the biggest chocker of them all
Miazilla @Dragawn
The best car in the lineup, hands down. It has the fastest tracktime with over two seconds, lowest fuelconsumption of the remaining car. But… this comes at the highest price of the pack, meaning we will not be able to stock up on all the necessary parts needed and have to be very conservative in our spendings. This said, Eric is going to buy one for trackdays, anyway.
The three ramaining cars are very even in price and performance.
@KLinardo Bobcat, 3rd place
Second fastest of the top cars, second most economical and with the worst reliability of the lot at the highest cost. But it has good decisions all around and is very balanced.
@strop Armada Fore Gen2 ATTC, 2nd place
The fastest car of the remaining lot, and the most economical. The cut comes from the fact that even if it has the highest reliability, it has more thing that can fail given a long endurancerace, such as AWD and active swaybars. It is also the second most costly of the three.
@AirJordan Smooth Duster SR, 1st place
Third fastest of the top cars, third most economical and with the second highest reliability, it’s the most sensible and balanced of the lot with good decisions all around.
Gratulation to @AirJordan for making a very good, balanced and sensible car.
I’ll take a third place to the likes of @strop and @AirJordan any day.
Thanks for the great round @gridghost!
Seems like my +12 quality on fixtures for additional reliability and +15 aerodynamics ruined me
I should learn to not use nearly the full budget when possible.
Congratulations to @AirJordan !
Semi-active swaybars? What???
goes to check suspension options
LOL I totally forgot to change it back, well, that explains a LOT about my sudden lack of engineering leeway
Armada don’t use active suspension components. They’re old school like that, so I fucked up my lore, oops.
Good show though, definitely in good company!
You hosting @AirJordan?
I thought i wrote that cheaper is better
@strop I actually got surprised too, but it was the car you submitted so i had to go on what i got.
@AirJordan you are a true master of the track(day) car! It’s your second straight CSR win (@phale was actually the first user to accomplish that feat), so are you ready to host the next round this time? It’s been a while since you last hosted a round of this contest…
WHAT?!!?!? Now that’s a true honour.
I feel like I’m obliged to host now, since it’s two in a row. I’ll think of something fast and hope number of entries stay low
Double posting oh yeah So I had this idea for a while, thought about making my own challenge but time and will is needed so here it goes:
CSR41 => 2in1
Family is on the way (well not really but hey it’s internet). Since I’m huge car enthusiat but don’t have a space for several cars, I need a 2 (3 4) in one.
Sensible stuff:
4 or preferably 5 dors. I really like wagons but hey if you don’t want bonus points than go for something else, but some space for holidays would be nice. 4 seats are okay but yes…5 is usually better. NO need for more. Really like to be comftable, listen to sweet music.
Costs are pain in the ass, so keep them low, service and fuel (will look at economy graph, number and gearing). Crusing speeds at my country are 60 in town, 90 out of town 130-140 highway (km/h). Oh and tyre size…try to get some common dimmensions so one tire is not like 300€.
Fuel premium 95, if you realy think its worth 98 think again. Its not forbiden tho… No need for 91, we only have 95.
Since hauling family is the game, safety is important.
Not so sensible stuff:
I don’t need a track wepon but when the mountin pass is empty, my smile should reach my ears. Not necessary huge power but more of a great drive and an experiance. Looks included.
There will be lap times involved but with a trick. This should be a valid hint =>dat video=> balance is the key.
Other stuff :
Year 1995 (model can be from 93 forward, trim 95)
Max combined engineering time is 150
max cost is 18000 @0%
If it would be 2017, I would look for S4 avant, C43amg-T, 340iM touring… Because of double character they posses.
More than pure stats I will evaluate choices and setups. I know bodies are not equal so don’t worry about choosing the not so efficient one. Well if its a brick I’ll stil notice that…
Yes I would like an ad (for the spirit of CSR, they are a must-no add no chance for me to notce you-it’s '95) and yes you can expect blurbs only.
Naming:
CSR41-yournamehere
cars birth certificate
CSR41-yournamealsohere
engine time of death
(I swear if I will have to search for your car…well I wont )
Deadline 24.5. 17.00 Central EU time, results 28.5. or sooner.
