The Car Shopping Round (Round 64): Tears in Heaven

Premium work trucks? Does that mean we can build and submit utes? Anyway, the client is best described as a cashed-up tradie with loads of money to burn. And what about off-road capability? How much of a factor will it be? Regardless, practicality, utility and comfort are going to be the top priorities, and regular unleaded fuel will be a must. In fact, this round has echoes of CSR38, but with a sillier context.

Edit: I just made a test car, and it actually isn’t a ute…

“Have you heard? That guy Billy-Joe just won lottery!”
“I have read it in the news, yeah.”
“I wonder what he’ll do with that sort of money. Probably buy beers and guns.”
“Hmm… Actually, I think this could be a great opportunity for us.”
“How?”
“You know that stupid silver A99 van sitting in the lot for half a year? God damn manufacturer sending in motor with idiotic specification. I think we propose it to Billy-Joe.”
“Oh yeah? You think he would buy into it?”
“Why not? It’s perfect for him. I will probably convince him to buy it to transport whatever cheap booze he might be making or something.”

Introducing Carnegie A99 Van. Back to the 60’s again, eh?

Carnegie has been on a roll with hillbillies recently. They make cars that is so masculine the driver could grow body hairs just by looking at them. But all the 800hp coupe and sedan and the V8 police interceptor or all the NASCAR victories won’t do them good if they cannot make cheap, reliable transport. They have a compact “Axe”, but that’s not really selling all that well, what with being stupid Italian car having the name of a beloved 1960’s small V8 machine.

Now they’re trying again, however. And it seems that they can hark back to the 1960’s a lot more convincingly with this one. It’s the A99 Van. That’s right. The cab-over compact van of the 1960’s is here again today in 2017. It might still be cab-over, but the styling is completely in 2017.

It’s available with plethora of options, they say there’s nearly 150,000 combinations available for the customers. With engine ranging from Turbocharged 1.4 Italian Motor to 7.0 litre 800hp V8, and various intermediate choices. That and many other options.

It should be extremely practical. It should also be cheap to run and maintain. With technologies that are well known and easy to work with. It’s a proper workman’s van after all. But if you optioned it out carefully, you might get something a little bit more special.

The example depicted above is an A99 Luxury with standard V8, that’s 318cui making about 302hp, lean tuned for emission and economy. The “Luxury” tag is no joke. The interior is lined with the same leather and electronic gubbins as those in the finest German cars. The quality is quite amazing for a work van. The infotainment system is one of the greatest we’ve ever seen in a car. Features might not be too extreme, but they’re very easy to use and is of extremely high quality as well. The base van is quite neat, but then it’s also come with a few options that showcase what’s available for the A99.

It has what they call the “ZS29” Off-Road Package. Which means this van comes with 6 speed automatic instead of 8, but the ratio is set for off-roading and is a lot tougher. It also comes with raised suspension, knobbly big tires, and also locking differential with massive lever sticking out of the dashboard, moving it feels like shoveling coal into steam train, very manly. It also has the Prestige Interior Package. With greatest Connolly leather, the same with those use in top range British luxury car. And also all the Crash Avoidance system you could ever need, the best on the market today.

You might not have all the van you want, but you could have everything you want in just a van. 2017 Carnegie A99.

As Billy-Joe wants to be manager and sole employee, i think one car is enough.

Got loads of cash and want to spend it on a high-end delivery vehicle? Then step this way towards the Fleet Industries Audax Elite. This top-of-the-line trim of our large unibody SUV comes with off-road tires and suspension as standard for improved go-anywhere capability. With a high-quality luxury interior and entertainment system, you and your best buddies can enjoy the creature comforts of a five-star hotel even in the most remote wilderness imaginable. As for exterior and interior options, you can specify any color and finish you want, if standing out from the crowd is your thing.

It comes with 4 seats as standard (although you can order more if you want), and the rear two of those fold completely flat if you need more cargo space. And with a fuel-sipping turbo straight-six under the hood, mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and manual locking differential, it’s smoother and more economical than you might expect. On top of that, the Audax is built to last, and to that end, we have fitted it with aluminum panels to avoid rust. We haven’t forgotten about safety either - this thing has all the latest safety equipment and driver assistance systems you can think of.

So what business plan would you use this for? Simple - use it to deliver lumber, bricks and other building materials to customers in rural areas. There’s plenty of space in the back to carry lots of supplies, and with a coil-sprung live rear axle, the Audax can carry heavy loads without breaking a sweat. So don’t hesitate to consider the Audax for your next purchase. It can be yours for just $41800 before markups.

36% fuel economy, that’s nuts. Why are I6T’s so brokenly better than everything else?

After seeing the engine used by @Dragawn in CSR41, I followed his advice and gave my engine an undersized turbo compressor and turbine. On top of that, I used a lean air/fuel ratio and reduced the boost level to allow for a higher compression ratio.

Here is my CSR42 engine in all its glory, if you still need convincing - or are merely curious. The torque curve isn’t as flat as I wanted it to be, but at least it spools up quickly.

Edit: all other things being equal, an I6 tends to be more economical than a V6 of the same dimensions due to reduced friction losses. Also, an I6 is inherently balanced, whereas a V6 is not, leading to greater smoothness and comfort. This explains why I prefer to use them over V6s if the engine bay is large enough. On top of that, the engineering time for an I6 is less than that of an equivalent V6. In fact, I have used I6s (turbo or NA) for eight of the past ten rounds of CSR, including this one - during that span, in the only two rounds in which I did not use an I6, I went for a cross-plane V8.

Ah. I don’t think I’ve ever managed to produce anything with better than a 27 before.
I’m sort of impressed, but I’m curious if it works for other motors.
Just seems like everything in CSR is I6T’s XD
I managed a high 26% out of a modern OHV V8. I’m happy with that. As someone with a smart car in the driveway, I can safely say fuel economy isn’t everything.

Edit: I didn’t need convincing, I wasn’t upset, just curious. I do things my own way anyway, but it never hurts to learn from other people’s success.

You’ll get no arguments from me on the beauty of the I6 setup.
My old tow car was a 2.6L D26 Volvo 265 Diesel, still one of the smoothest (if not quitest) engines I’ve ever driven.
Beside the Diesel Smart Car in my driveway sits a 2004 Chevrolet Epica (Daewoo Magnus) and its 2.5L I6 makes a delightful sound, though it’s a bit short on power for the long gearing.

and if I post up a pic of my motor:

There are definitely pluses and minuses to both.
Then again I got a lot better economy than I was expecting considering I went for a brute force, thick metal, heavy frame, survive armageddon type dealy. It’s still more efficient than compareable american SUVS and Cargo Vans.

I toyed briefly with the idea of a Max Size I3. If you run the sliders up all the way you get a 4.1L, and the power you can squeeze out of it is surprising… but I doubt any redneck would want to pop the hood with that hiding underneath…
“Yea, check out my 3 Cylinder…”

Sir, could you calm down the double posting, thanks.

Single unit.

More like super work trucks, GT delivery vans? Idek. Huge off-road capability is one path you could wander, making a purely city delivery vehicle is another path. I feel like I’ll have to clarify:
Example path:

Another example:

Orrrr:

Kind of :joy: ‘reasonable’ is more “Try to keep it atleast above 10 mpg” in this instance.

I assume that this has to do with 6 cylinders driving 1 turbine, you’ll notice that a V12 has a similar advantage.

Dammit…forgot the winch!!!

Looking at your Super Puma, it reminds me of my Audax Elite - same body, 4x4 drivetrain, and a similar business plan (although mine involves hauling building materials instead of water), as well as near-identical pre-markup pricing! However, I went for a four-seater configuration inside - it was the only way for me to keep the combined engineering time under the limit - and used a highly efficient turbo straight-six to keep running costs down. On top of that, I fitted aluminum panels to make the most of the extra economy the I6T would provide.

Now that the unlock years for the not-Suburban and not-Explorer bodies (in all sizes, except for the smallest one) have been changed to 2000 and 2003, respectively, the largest version of the not-Flex body is the only SUV body with a wheelbase of >2.9m less than 10 years old if the trim year is set to 2017. I still wish it were available as a truck, not just as an SUV; if it did, I would have made an old-school ladder-framed truck instead of the unibody SUV I eventually went with. As it is, it’s still the thinking man’s large SUV… and a machine I might just be proud of.

The GSI Clydesdale is the workhorse your high end courier business needs. Leave those limp-wristed putt-putt delivery vehicles to your competitors, when that asshole celebrity chef needs fresh lobster STAT, you’ll be glad you have a twin turbo V12 pumping 720 _horse_power to all four tires. Put one in your stable today.
