The Crowd Sourcing Competition [Round 49]

Materials wise the only one that i would actively rule out is carbon fiber, if that’s even unlocked by 1988(also please no light truck monocoque, if that’s even an option with rear engine). Fiberglass is frowned upon, mostly due to safety concerns, but still allowed. The price limit is $35,000, and i didn’t really think ET/PU limits were really needed due to only allowing between -5 and +5 quality sliders.

So on discord some more examples of Midlands designs were requested as well as lore, so here’s a short synopsis of what I tend to keep in mind when i’m designing for this brand and some more fun car pics.

Lore!

Basically Ford of Europe but between Mercury and Mercedes in terms of build quality and price point with some Lotus and Hillman thrown in for engineering quirkiness. They’ve always had a big presence in road racing, mostly touring cars staring around the early '70s( having the LIbra do relatively ok in the '70s BRC 24h Nurburgring) and Group 5 style stuff in the '80s and beyond, with their primary sponsor being Martini & Rossi. The CEO and engineering team are pretty much allergic to turbos on anything before 2005, because they remembered how slow earlier turbo cars could be and basically poured all their R&D into getting their N/A engines as efficient as possible while keeping performance numbers up. Midlands cars were mostly grey market exported until about 1977, when they began to be sold through Faolan dealerships over in the US. By 1984 they have their own dealerships there due to the oil crisis hitting and smaller, more efficient cars being sought after. Midlands never felt the need to develop a boxer engine because of the layout of their cars usually giving plenty of space around the engine in the rear to not need the space saving capabilities of one, sticking to their tried and true i4’s and V6’s. They do have a few front engined cars, the Zephyr, Eos, and Elysium. The V8 that’s in the Eos, which essentially carried from 1967 to 1989 before anything beyond quality adjustments had to be done to it, is basically just two of their DOHC i4’s bolted together. Same goes for the V12 in the Elysium, which is two of the 90 degree V6’s cast together

Also, to assuage any worries this extra bit of lore brings, the way that this is lore formatted, your submissions are technically from college age yuppies that may not know a lick about what actually goes into a car, much less what dohc means or what a boxer motor is. They do probably know that Porsches have them and Porsches are cool, so lets say it has that. So not having tons of familiarity with what midlands already makes is perfectly ok. That being said, having some familiarity with what Midlands makes in terms of cylinder count and arrangement makes the engineering and accounting departments happy, which is favorable.

If we can afford it, is AWD allowed?

Also, which fixtures exactly do we use to make up the badge?

Awd is allowed, just don’t do the meme of rear engine fwd. it needs to be at least a 50/50 split if you do awd.

And the pieces used for the badge are shown in the main post, but i’ll put them here again.

I can’t see any deadline, am I blind?

I think he said the competition itself doesn’t start until the 19th, so don’t worry too much.

But I remember seeing a “July 10” deadline somewhere…

its hidden behind a million dropdown menus

I found it now, maybe not the best idea to hide it among the example cars, lol.

it wasn’t intended to be hidden at all. the forum reformatted my post and i couldn’t figure out how to fix it. it just decides to nest drop down menus for some reason

Are you using float elements? In my experience, they tend to do that with collapsible sections.

nope. i’m just using the default ones that the post maker on here uses, which give nothing in terms of the actual css formatting they’re using

Submission submitted. (Successfully, I hope.)

Hi there, uh,

I am an average young college student, named Darryl.

Darryl Certainlynotaforeigncompanyattemptingtodiscreetlypitchabadgeengineeringpartnership Tara.

So I saw your guys’ car contest, and I thought, uh, I had a really cool, like, tubular idea for a car, and uh, I called it the Medea. It’s super cool, like, turbocharged and everything.

I drew a couple pictures of what it would look like, like, uh, fake advertisements and stuff, so you could see what it, uh, looks like.

So, uh, yeah. I think it’s pretty rad that you guys are doing this, and I think my idea is uh, turbotastic enough to fit what you all need.
The best part is, you could even base it off of some, like, foreign company’s chassis to make it cheaper, and uh they probably wouldn’t mind. You can try asking them.

Anyway, I hope you guys have a good competition and stuff. Later dudes.

Sencerely,

Darryl C. Tara.

(Just a normal college student).

Suddenly I feel like the pic I posted above just isn’t rad enough.
This ought to show off the car a bit better.

So yeah, the challenge is open!

(has been for technically about a day at this point, but i'm dumb and totally spaced out last night and didn't announce it being open then. X3)

The challenge finishes at midnight July 10, 2021 EST. Have fun!

(also please please please check over your entry and the requirements before you submit. I’d much rather have you submit your car right on the deadline because you were double checking everything than have it binned fairly quickly due to not reading all the rules)

and here’s the countdown timer

I’m too dumb to understand this part, do we make our own moodboard or send the existing one?

I think you make your own. The example one was there to give you an idea of what “mood board” means.

I don’t think your board has to be that high quality tho.

I put together a collage of 80s images and icons that the designers in my company kept in their studio while designing the car I submitted. And I included that collage.

Got it, thanks. I’ll get to making one.

Lol, I’m sure it’s only to get you in the correct mood, and no one has to make another one
