The year is 1971, around the world anyone who is anybody is well aware of the super popular market of cars cropping up, the Premium Grand Tourer. These are the top of the totem-pole for enthusiasts, the majesty of the Vee-Twelve engine, the luxury of the finest designers, some of the most well built, and down right quick cars a person can buy off the showroom floor. Yes, we are talking about that.

What this means for you is a well deserved chance to sell a car at truly premium prices. It doesn’t matter how much it costs, or how few you can make. But the status which surrounds it.

why only V12’s?

^ up that. i6 can be just as smooth

No engine displacement restriction?

I would be inclined to question the V12 only option as well. The romantic notion of a GT is obvious, but not many V12 GTs were made during this time. Both Jaguar and Ferrari made them, but they were pretty much alone in the GT-V12 ideology. Aston Martin used V8s almost exclusively and both Mercedes and BMW were using V8s and I4/6s for the GT class cars. The V12 is an engine which will dramatically boost the GT ratings, but they were really not all that common place for the classification of GT, now or in the early 70s. I think it is unrealistic to have this limitation, despite the obvious advantage it presents.

Crossplane 8s aren’t too far off, either - I say we just let any engine combo play - isn’t that the point of the contest? A better car will win? I’m sure some I6 or V8 would win out over another V12 - just having 12 cylinders doesn’t make it the best, even for prestige, there’s a lot more factors than simply cylinder count.

Aston used more sixes and eights than twelves, and Alfa rarely ever strayed from the V6, and I know we don’t have one, but the LFA runs a V10.

I say let everyone play, don’t stagnate the contest, lack of choice leads to lack of competition - I’ll be bored as hell if it’s just 10 different V12s competing with each other.

FWIW, I’d say let more valves be used, too - no real reason why a car company wouldn’t build a multi-valve head in the 70s - rarer, more expensive, more prone to fail, sure, but not unheard of.

Response from work via cellphone

I will allow all engine configs.

I will not allow 3v or 4v. Extensive research shows these configs were not used in production cars till the mid 70s.

if you mean ‘commonly’ then yes, maybe, but the honda civic cvcc used a 3 valve SOHC

Also what factory size are we using to assess price etc?

the CVCC was designed in 1971, and used in production cars from 1975 onward.

Notable examples of Pre '75 Multi-Valve
1969 Ford Escort RS (powered by the BDA Cosworth 1601 DOHC 4v) Built just enough for Homologation. Limited Production
1970 Ford Escort RS (BDA Cosworth 1700 DOHC 4v) Built just enough for Homologation. Limited Production
1972 Lotus 907 2 Liter I4 DOHC 4v ~20,000 1972-1975 with many oil related problems.

But in 1971, even the SUPER exotics were all on DOHC 2v. In that spirit, is why I chose to lock this competition to 2v.

We can discuss it further if you wish, but my stance is strongly against multi-valve for this challenge.

Medium 1

Rule discussion remains open till Monday the 14th when the competition will start.

I agree. Honda was the first example of more than 2 valves in production mainstream vehicles. They were used as far back as cars were being built, but were very uncommon until the mid-70s, and didn’t become common until the early 80s. Even the V12 Ferraris and Jaguars of the early 70s were primarily 2v configurations.

To take Ferrari as an example, their first road car with a multivalve engine were the V8 powered Mondial and 308 in 1982.

As for Jaguar, first example I found was the XJS with it’s DOHC I6 in 1983.

Well, speaking of multivalve engines, the Triumph Dolomite Sprint had a SOHC 4valve configuration in 1973.

Not arguing the rules of 2valves setting that I think is fitting for the competition, I just like point that fact out.

well. you surely know your stuff more than i do

but i’m not saying no either, it seems fittng enough

Despite there not being any production cars at the time with such technology, it wasn’t something unheard of, or technically impossible. Before the war, since the 1920s , here were production and racing cars that used multivalve set ups. Limiting it on a 1971 challenge on the basis of “no production car at the Time had it” is missing the point of the game. Automation isn’t meant Just to be a game in which people copy what the manufacturers do, rather it is also meant to be a tycoon game in which the player can decide what he wants to do with his company and what kind of technology he wants to use. Were it a technology that the game wrongly assumed was viable, such as the old polymer that was dropped because of that, or something that was impossible at the time, like computer controlled stuff, there would be no complains. But here we are limiting something that was common knowledge and that could be done by anyone, point being lotus and triumph, not recognised today as the largest or cleverest makers, to have come up with this system roughly at the time this challenge is set.

Oh, 4v was made all the way though the 20s 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s in race cars (Notice the word race) I know where are are coming from, but you are missing the spirit of the competition Leo, it is missing the forest for the trees.

The 3 examples we have of limited and not limited production Multivalve pre 1975 engines all have something in common. They are all Inline-Fours.

I will make a counter offer.

If players wish to use an Inline-4, they may use a 4v setup.

Rules edited to allow Multi-Valve setups for Inline-4 engine configuration. Last chance to ask questions about rules/contest them.

A competition with v6/v8/v12s can be amazing: not always the best car is the most powerful car.

A real fact: the 90s Ferrari V12 F1 it was the most powerful car, but needing much fuel and the chassis isn’t the best of the grille.

I have never entered one of the challenges here, so forgive me if my questions are obvious. What are the rules on engines in terms of how they work overall. I have seen a lot of engines proudly posted in the engine forum that break under testing or are broken before they are even started. I myself had to retool all of my engines after a recent update because I noticed while they ran fine on the dyno, when I put them on the track they would backfire when I hit 3rd or 4th gear depending on the car.

So my question to you is, do you accept all entries or do they have to run clean without issue or is this somehow weighted?

Reliability is up to you to decide, you must give it adequate cooling and it has to get the fuel economy required but if you want to let it rev until the engine starts to come apart that’s your call, remember 50% of your score is based on gt premium market value, even if reliability is not a heavily scores stat, it will still bring down your overall points, so balance it wisely.
