Welcome! The first time is always a little uncertain but we are generally friendly unless you’re a douche straight off the bat (you’re not). The game actually covers quite a lot, even if a little simplified here and there, and does a remarkably good job of accommodating most of the kinds of cars from all the post WW2 eras, so it takes a while to become familiar with everything. The first time I entered an actual “let’s build a car for this niche” challenge having played the game for some six months, I finished 20th out of 24th because while my car was a veritable pocket rocket, it was also a death trap xD

i finished my car and took a re-look of the thread… seems like i missed a part of “IT’S 1970s!” and built a muscle like car that looked like the mid to late 60s

Do you think this choice sunk some potential marketshare due the lower availability of the fuel? (A.K.A. did you tried to see how it perform on the market with a regular unleaded?)

It’s only '71, the oil crisis hasn’t hit yet, power is still measured in gross, and leaded gas is king, really it is more 60’s still than 70’s. And a larger muscle car like the dodge charger, ford galaxie or Chevy chevelle could be optioned to be a budget gt car with a powerful v8, luxury interiors and a taller rear diff ratio to allow easy highway crusing.

That said my 5.4 OHV V12 is only making about 200hp and 300 lb ft So I’m not going to be winning any drag races, but with a smoothness in the mid 80’s, a quiet exhaust and a decently wide automatic transmission my car is designed for cruise nights rather that stoplights.

The tooltip and a section in the detailed stats of the regions does advise you on how availability might affect desirability score. As far as Automation was concerned, at least in Gasmea (didn’t check the other regions), there was no issue with shortage of super leaded in 1971.

200hp. that’s rather low for a v12, dont you think? or were you chasing for a bit more economy?

how many carb and carb barrels did you use?

Triple quads, economy isn’t great but the class doesn’t care about economy, acceleration and top speed do take hits but the comfort bonus of a mild cam made up for it my score dropped when I tried adding more power.

This is one of those challenges where I can’t wait to read the humor and sarcasm of Lordred dripping off my little blurb for how good my car was for one thing and then terrible everywhere else.

I don’t think I understood the premise of this challenge perfectly and definitely went a different way with it. Y’all are talking about 2-300 HP. My car is pushing 900. I wasn’t going for a power monster either. I just wanted to build a big luxurious cruiser with an equally large displacement. It just happened to make a rediculous amount of power with a rather modest tune.

Truly, KLinardo has picked up the mantle I have since left, and is wearing it well. It used to be me not understanding the premise of challenges… or understanding them perfectly and refusing not to overpower my entries :laughing:

The desirability and competitiveness scores were actually instrumental in encouraging me to build my cars in more diverse, balanced ways (also that period of intense beta testing where I churned out generations worth of cars ranging from the sports cars to the fun cars to the family cars to the SUVs and even the delivery and utility vehicles…) I also happen to really like the colour green.

Incidentally, what ballpark competitiveness does your entry actually have? If you’re seeing well over 100 with the default competitor packs, then I’d say it wasn’t a bad choice. After all, I was hoping to make as large a v12 as I could, but I also really wanted to use the not-Miura body, and that won out.

Oh wow lots of entrants cool. Also lots of things I’d like to comment on O.o

OK where to begin. Uh first, i’ll be a broken record and echo what I said in the hypercar contest, I’ve never built a GT/P car before. I’m not even sure I know which areas I should have focused on seeing people comment on various aspects. I figured if I made a really fast car that was comfortable and handled reasonably well that I’d be set. I’m not far off, but I’m thinking it’ll be another very expensive car which in the end will kill off some competitiveness. I mean overall I had the second highest raw desirability for hypercars, but I was 20K+ more than everyone else in the Top, except for nialloftara who I was 100K+, which worked against me. Though now think about it, it did say it could be priced however high we wanted so maybe we should have screw it to the competitiveness score and just focused on raw desirability?

I built four cars for this comp to test out various designs. the first using the not-miura b/c it seemed like a pretty good choice to test the waters. It did well. Then I built a GT/P variant of my company’s flagship sedan, it did well though not as good. Then I built a car with one that everyone seems to be using and based that car off the Iso Grifo. Then I built another charger-esque one. I mashed the charger and the grifo-like together to get my entrant. I’m surprised to learn that my 450+hp doesn’t have as much company (perhaps a thing I missed). Anyway I scrapped the first two designs, but I’m keeping the latter two. I think I’m going to post my runner-up on my company thread soon.

Lastly, I love american muscle car design. Its, in my opinion, everything that america is about. Big, powerful, strong lines. Excessive? Perhaps, but it didn’t matter as much then. It was raw and yet elegant in its own right. Don’t get me wrong euro (italian) grand tourers are exquisite as well, but I’d rather have an early 70s charger or 'cuda (my uncle had both and they left a lasting impression).

I’m not Nialoftiara, but my first car had a 5.0L V12 making exactly 200hp, using six 1-bbl carbs - eventually I got it to 230hp without hurting econ by running injection, keeping around mid-20s mpg US.
Second car had to have a different family, old motor wouldn’t fit, so it’s a 5.1L motor now up around 285hp - which is more “accurate,” but I don’t like the motor putting out that much power… definitely more than I’d want to drive… and now mpg is only in the high teens.

If I would have known entries were going to stray as insanely high as ~900hp, I don’t think I would have even bothered trying this contest. I took the GT aspect a bit more seriously than some it seems, but maybe that’s an outlier. C’est la vie.

So I had to go back and check my numbers. It turns out that I had built a different trim level of the same car that was originally pushing 900 HP. My entry is equipped with a 1970 MY 10.6L V12 making 621 HP. Much more reasonable.

Like my entry in the 1996 saloon shootout I aimed for real life comparisons specifically the 1971 dodge charger with a 318 V8 in terms of power, speed and economy. automobile-catalog.com/make/ … /1971.html

I’m close but slightly under the gross power, faster than the performance stats in all categories, and down a bit in terms of average economy. The price tag for my car is about 50% higher than the charger as this is a premium gt contest after all so there are lots of handling, comfort, and prestige parts added to make it feel more up market.
