Wolf in Sheep's Clothing 04 (WISC04) [1 Week Left]

Brief
“You want to make a what?” The boss leaned back in his chair.
“You heard me sir,” You tossed a folder on his desk. “A sports car that isn’t a sports car.”
“And why’s that?” The ceiling fan whirred overhead. “What’s the point of a subtle sports car? It’s like having subtle dynamite.”
“Well,” You scratched your head, “You know the Fast and Furious movies, right?”
“Yes.”
“And you know how sports cars are getting pulled over left and right these days.”
“I have read the headlines.”
“Anything sporty and showy is grabbing too much attention thanks to those movies. Plus, not everyone wants a sports car that makes them look like a boy racer.”
“I see your point,” The boss opened the folder. “The gentleman’s sports car.”
“More like a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You’ll have no idea it’s a sports car until it leaves you in the dust!”
“Hmm,” The boss nods. “I can see some value in this.” He closed the folder, “Alright, you got your approval. Create a team and make it happen.”
You smile, “Yes sir!”

Welcome to WISC04!

The year is 2004 and fast, showy cars are getting all the wrong kinds of attention. You and your boss agree to make a “factory sleeper”, a hotshot car with a subdued look to give the thrills of a sports car without all the attention!

Tasks: You must design the factory sleeper. Designing a base model is encouraged but not required.

Priorities:

:star::star::star:

  • Performance (sportiness and raw stats) - Car should be objectively sporty, both in feel and on paper. Performance targets:
    • 0-62 mph: < 8s
    • Top speed: > 125 mph
    • Lateral g: > .85 (SUVs, Trucks, Minivans, and Vans can hit > .8)
    • Quarter mile time: < 15.5s
    • Basically, can your car outrun a V6 Mustang if one pulled up next to you?
  • Subtlety - The car shouldn’t be Lamborghini levels of LOOK AT ME (or even Sierra Cosworth levels), but it should be sporty looking and distinguishable enough from a common car.
  • Practicality - It should still be able to be used as a “normal car” with little to no issue. Since the in-game practicality stat is a bit scuffed, this one may be more subjective.
    • Vans and Trucks will be scored on utility instead (ie, can it still be used as a van or truck with little to no issue).

:star::star:

  • Drivability - It should be fast, but tame enough for the common man.
  • Price - Speed and performance should come at a reasonable price, but sometimes a car that’s heads and shoulders above the others is worth the extra cash.
  • Fuel economy - If you wanted a gas guzzler, the 60s would be glad to help you out, but fuel is somewhat cheap.
  • Reliability - The car shouldn’t break down every 5 feet, but it is a sports car.
  • Service costs - It is a sports car, but it isn’t a supercar. It shouldn’t need full engine rebuilds as regular service.

:star:

  • Safety - It should have the bells and whistles of cars of the era, enough to protect you and your family.
  • Comfort - It should be comfortable enough to take on a road trip if needed.
  • Prestige - You don’t want it to draw attention, but you do want the few who recognize it to know what you have.
  • Loudness - You want to hear your engine sing, but you don’t want other people to hear it sing.

Rules:

  • Stable game build.
  • Every bodystyle is allowed, but no meme, legacy, or open wheeled bodies. Body specific requirements will be judged by how the game classifies the body. This would include convertibles, as long as they meet the other rules.
  • Car Trim and Engine Variant year must be set to 2004.
    • Car Model and Engine Family can be older than 2004.
  • Vehicle must be “realistic” (no, a quad turbo V12 is not realistic) (a four seat wagon isn’t either).
  • Vehicle must be street legal (Lights, wipers, gas cap, etc).
  • Interiors are NOT required and will not be judged.
  • Max combined techpool costs: $50M.
  • Max budget: $30K. Recommended Budget: $25K.
  • Car design must not “grab attention” (ie, to a regular person, it’s a regular car).
  • Max two aero fixtures.
  • No race parts (anything with the word “race” in it), including billet steel, carbon fiber, and carbon ceramic brakes.
  • Pump gas only (unleaded fuel, no higher than 93 AKI).
  • Car must meet WES 9 Emissions Regulations.
  • Loudness < 55.
  • Reliability > 70.
  • Safety > 50.
  • No V16s.
  • No semi slicks.
  • Tire size must end in 5.
  • No negative quality or negative techpool.
  • Car must have at least 5 full seats.
    • Cargo vans and single cab trucks only need 2 full seats.
    • Extended cab trucks should come with 2+2 seating. (You may get a realism ding/DQ if you don’t have a good lore reason as to why you don’t have a 2+2 arrangement).
    • Crew/full cab trucks (4 door pickups) will need 5 full seats.
    • Minivans and passenger vans need at least 7 full seats.

Submissions:

  • Cars must be sent in by DM. ONLY the sleeper is required for submission. You can design and build a base car if you want, but it is not required in any way.
  • Naming convention:
    • Car model: WISC04 - USERNAME
    • Car trim: Car name. (ex, ACZ Concur S4C)
    • Engine family: WISC04 - USERNAME
    • Engine variant: Engine name (ex, 2.3L I4)
  • Posting a car ad is required for the sleeper. If you have a base car, you can feature it here.

Why no coupe?

Coupe is a wolf in wolf’s clothing

What is the year required? The title says 04, the naming scheme says 02, the actual rule isn’t specified anywhere

I knew I forgot something. The year is 2004, which I made a last minute change to. I’ll update the main post.

In other words, a maximum of 98 RON (although 91 and 95 RON should be preferable)

That means any convertible is off the table.

How about a minor bonus for lower loudness values, to avoid spooking other road users?

I think this is for balancing reasons - a pair of lips, or one each of a spoiler/wing and lip.

Sounds about right (although a third seat in the second row for sedans and wagons would grant a small realism bonus, unless you have a very good reason in the lore).

This is because OHV engines struggle to reach a WES rating higher than this.

They won’t be judged, either - although you may add them if you wish.

Anything requiring a CNC Workshop (titanium conrods) or even a billet aluminum block shouldn’t be allowed, either.

Correct. Aero isn’t very prominent on these types of cars, and the realism rule will prevent comically big wings.

Hopefully the practicality stat being so high will discourage 4 seat sedans/wagons, plus the aforementioned realism rule comes into play.

Loudness can be a 1 star priority as well as lower octanes, since a lower loudness makes the car more subtle and lower octanes keeps running costs down.

The “what counts as a race part” haunts me sometimes, but yes, no billet steel parts, magnesium blocks/wheels, and titanium conrods.

Can you clarify? I don’t understand this …

… and no coupe. None of the inspirations are what I’d call purebred sports cars, some definitely wandered into (or are still wandering towards) sportscar territory rather than properly belonging there, and most of them are top of their line, too.

I think the race parts rule is too broad. Magnesium blocks were used mostly on sports cars throughout the 20th century, and by 2004 were definitely being used on non-sports cars (BMW N52). CF parts like spoilers and roof panels were also well into street legal cars by then. Titanium rods were used on the NSX, a sports car, but it’s not hard to imagine a sleeper Accord with the NSX’ engine…

Is this based on what Automation considers a coupe, or what actually is?

Just a suggestion as i keep seeing reliability posted as a priority, and it makes sense for customer perspective, but for this i wanna ask if we can just set a minimum amount. Reasons being:

  • It would be more realistic to have a number to achieve for the standard set by your “boss”.
  • It’s a performance car based challenge and 3 star priority for reliability can take out that competitive edge for the pure performance. Meaning with this change, people gonna focus on making the cars fast over reliable to win.

Again, this is just a suggestion. If you want to keep it as is, no worries.

Hmm, I never knew of the magnesium blocks or of the titanium conrods on the NSX. I thought they never trickled down past supercars. I’ll lift those bans, they’ll be allowed.

No coupe I was iffy on, since there are some sedan-coupe examples like the Cobalt SS. I’d be willing to allow sedan-coupes, but automation’s classification of sedan vs coupe is a bit dodgy, so it’d be a case by case basis. What I wouldn’t want is something like an Elise or Corvette showing up, and since practicality is high up, that would probably move most people over to sedans or wagons. I’ll change the rules to reflect this.

Maybe purebred was the wrong word to use since that may imply something like a Porsche Boxster or Toyota MR-2. I was initially thinking of something more sport focused than a top of the line model, such as Lotus Carlton vs V6 Accord, but a V6 Accord is decently performant in its own right.

Essentially, this challenge is aimed at making slow-looking cars that are actually fast. They might not be “purebreds” per se, but they pack a bigger punch than expected. Maybe a better performance target would be an SN95 V6 Mustang and a type of entry would be the aforementioned V6 Accord.

Long answer, but I hope this helps clarify.

That is a good point. I may bump it down to 2 star with service costs and do a minimum value (70 may be good).

More than enough cabriolet bodies on hatchback’s, SUV’s and two door sedans.

Mandating four or five full seats and placing any priority on the Practicality stat (which IMO should not be done, as it’s based on passenger and cargo volume which are broken) should be more than enough to keep Corvettes and Boxsters and whatnot out of the running.

You may be right - specifically, sedans, wagons, SUVs, and crew/extended-cab pickup trucks should all have at least five seats each, whereas sedan-based coupes only need at least four. The OP did, however, make an exception for cargo vans and regular-cab pickup trucks:

That should clear up any confusion regarding minimum seating capacity.

I just updated the rules on this. 5 seats for all, except for cargo vans and single cab trucks (which only need 2 minimum) and minivans/passenger vans (which need at least 7). Crew cabs will need more than 2, and extended cab trucks will probably be submitted with 2+2 since it’ll be advantageous for them practicality and realism wise.

This seating rule should also keep true coupes like Corvettes and Boxsters out as well, so all body styles are now formally allowed. Convertibles are allowed too, as long as they meet the other requirements. Which means we may get one of these but that’s fine by me.

Beware

Anyone want to collab? I would do the engineering part

Proud of this CBC Quest with a flat 6, NA with 30mpg, but six sec 0 to 100 and sub 300km/h (180mph~) top speed…

Seating requirements for SUVs?

I’m assuming 5 full seats as well?

At least 5 full-sized seats (2 and 3 in the first and second rows, respectively), although having more seats would be optional.

And I just cooked up a few test mules (including two four-door sedans - one is a big V8 RWD cruiser and the other is a smaller, lighter turbo I4 AWD alternative) that could easily fit the brief of this challenge… I’ll just have to go with the one that suits me the most.
