#Detroit 2017 - Daily Round-Up
###Pre-Show
Welcome everyone to this years coverage of the Automation Detroit Auto Show. For Splendid Auto Monthly, I’m your host, Gavin Anderson.
With the show opening tomorrow morning, the display halls are packed with thousands of people helping to finish off the many displays that we’ll be viewing over the next week and a bit. The keynote theatre has been setup, the press studio is up and running and every hotel within a 50 mile radius has been fully booked by the combined marketing department of every company in the world.
Already, a number of companies have shown off teasers of what to expect from their display, and to say the least, it looks like a very exciting start to 2017. Here’s the round-up:
Veteran muscle car maker OAM announced that the concept of the upcoming Chevalier will be on show at Detroit this year, and it looks set to take on the current muscle car line-up in the company’s usual swaggering form. Alongside this, they’re bringing a concept of the Traveller II and some of their prestigious classics to the show.
Zavir will be displaying the 7th gen Squalo this year, along with a magnesium-block V12 that’s had journalists at S.A.M. childish with excitement. We can also expect a new low-end convertible from the company in the form of the Luna Spider, along with new versions of many of their other vehicles and even a Z4500. This looks set to be one of the bigger displays this year.
River Automotive stated that they “should showcase something”, but no details have arisen since. More to follow.
Exciting news came on Sunday when Meliora announced that some new prototypes and concepts would be at the show, more to follow.
IMP have announced that plethora of vehicles from their sub-brands will be at the show, including new sedans and a hatchback. It seems that they could dominate in the passenger vehicle category of this year’s show. More exciting is the promise of “a carbon fibre Minivan” - we wait in anticipation for what this will turn out to be.
JHW are showing off their 2017 model line-up, though no further details have been given since.
Some rumours were circulating earlier this week that Gryphon Gear would be on display at the show, but they’re keeping it very well hidden if they are coming along.
Vanguard Automtive make their Detroit debut with a brand hatchback called the Valaencia R3, powered by a small range of i3s, while sister company Picasso will be displaying their new Equinox GT which looks set to take on the mid-range luxury coupe market. They have a keynote on January 10th, which we’ll be attending.
DSD made an exciting annoucnement earlier this week; they’re showing off an all new Hybrid. Called the Sambar, it’s using a bespoke, brand new hybrid system, powered by a Maesima-designed engine. DSD Racing will also be at the show, bringing along a specially tuned version of the Maesima MRZ-3. A new military vehicle, called the SFRAV (isn’t that just fecking awesome) will also be on show.
Arzami’s companies will be on display this year; more to follow.
Balatzar teased us earlier this year when the front page of their website was changed to the company’s “RS” logo - more to follow.
A group of RMW enthusisasts will be bringing along an-all classic lineup including the 1975 Cerberus. Despite the companies collapse in 2008, their heritage is still very strong thanks to their dedicated fans who have helped to organise this.
Puttzalong will be displaying for the first time this year, bringing along the all new Venice executive sedan. Powered by a range of i6s and V8s, it looks set to try and undercut the current executive sedan market with low prices.
Storm Automotive’s latest Shadow will be on display, and it’s an all electric super saloon!
Mott Works played a lazarus on us and are believed to be “revising 3 cars from early on in their history”
ADV gave us a sneak peak of their HUD Concept a few days ago, more details on the way.
A big announcement came on Wednesday when Dimension showed us what they were bringing to the display: a whole army of vehicles, including the updated Entropy, brand new Hypero, Supernova and much more. A press conference has also been organised. To say the least, this is one of the most anticipated displays of the show.
Erin annoucned on Thursday that a new AWD version of the Merna would be on the display, as well as the upcoming Visto, which finally replaces the long outdated Mk 4 version of the supermini.
Petoskey put some sneak peaks of their display on Twitter this afternoon, including a brand new utility vehicle and what appears to be a chrome-clad performance V8. More to follow.
It certainly looks set to be an action packed show. Join us tomorrow when things really will have got under way.

We weren’t exactly sure if we could showcase something, but i can safely confirm that river automotive will be showcasing three classic cars from 1970 & perhaps a surprise if we are able to finish it in time.
In response to the Pre-Show roundup, it blows my mind to be recognised on a thread this big and I can only be thankful for it, but I did mention that their would be a third car, thee Fleet Karinette.

Calvinator Bruiser 50th Anniversary Car.

The name was because it was entered in something else, but it didn’t qualify. This car is the 50th anniversary car of the original Calvinator Bruiser from 1968 (I will provide that in a later edit). The original car was a muscle car with a 496 ci V8.
This car is over 100 miles an our faster than the original car.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I know you have been anticipating a big reveal but unfortunately we are going to have to delay, our show vehicle hasn’t left England yet where it was supposed to be loaded onto a plane.

The UK based design studio had the car in transit but an unforeseen incident occurred, the transport semi truck carrying the centre stage car had a blowout while travelling to the airport, to make matters worse the equipment van carrying some car bits and merchandise rear ended the semi.
Both drivers got into a bit of an argument in their very Italian way, strong words were exchanged and eventually the police turned up to defuse the situation, the drivers had to spend the night in Scunthorpe police station meaning we couldn’t make any progress as nobody else is qualified to drive the semi truck.
We will hopefully be revealing the car later on in the evening tomorrow, I know it was last minute planning but the car had to be perfected, better late then never though.

Here is Calvinator’s first mini van. Royal recently released the Royal Wagon, which prompted Calvinator to build and release the Sublime. At a relatively low cost for a Calvinator ($93K), you can have a Calvinator Sublime. Its a minivan with a V8!!!
The car can go 213 mph and reach 60mph from stand still in only 4 seconds.
It has a 373 ci V8 engine with over 600 BHP.
It also happens to be rear wheel drive.

Darkness descends the stage.
The lights start to flash purple green and gold, Darkshines walks on to the stage while a car under covers is lit up in the spotlight before the entire stage is lit up.
G’day ladies and gentleman thank you for attending this first reveal from DSD. We at DSD believe we must enjoy and protect this planet and the great continent of Australia and that will not be done with electric vehicles that rely on coal powered power stations to provide their spark. Instead we have adopted a approach that has been used in rail transport for decades, using a internal combustion engine to recharge the batteries to a much larger more powerful electric motor.
Thanks to the kind people at Saminda we were able to use a MCA series engine modified to only power the batteries to the electric engines when required. This is the beginning of a new era for DSD and we could not have done it without the kind help of Saminda.
The most modern of engine was only ever going to be used in the most modern of vehicles ladies and gents the SAMBAR!

Clean lines. That was the name of the brief. Inside this long sleek 2 door saloon/limousine resides a 5 seat trimmed in red deer leather selected from my own wild red deer hunted from my property Mt Stanley. The HUD is top of the line, voice activation can be calibrated to the owner of the car in the case of being used as a limo. So even in the case of the owner being in the rear seat they have full control over all functions of the vehicle excluding driving the car.
The suspension can be tweaked by the occupant also in this manner, at anytime the rear occupant can ask the cars system to soften or stiffen the air suspension to suit the day or mood.
This truly is a car for 2018. And of coarse this is a DSD vehicle so you can expect the highest of safety features and driver assistance aids. And you can expect to pay only $35000 Automation dollars for an example.

Luke knew setting up the Storm Automotive display was going to be tricky, but, he’d asked for the best drivers from the Raceworks Division to give a helping hand. There would be more to this entrance to the Auto Show than just casually showing up, unloading cars from trailers, and hoping everyone noticed.
“Everyone ready?”
“Sure, boss. You’re certain these old relics will hold up to this?”
“I worked on them myself. While the Prince can’t do much, all it has to do is lead the charge. The Demon, from John Storm’s notes, is a handful, so keep that in mind. I’ve got the Wildcat, because it’s the handful. The Piranha Concept’s going to be an unknown element, so keep it gentle on that gas pedal, because we really don’t know what’s going to happen. As for the Shadow, go for making the crowd go wild in that electric car.”
“Got it. Everyone, on three!”
“One.”
“Two!”
“Three!”
The sound of screaming engines and squealing tires suddenly filled the air as the Storm Raceworks Division burst down the streets of Detroit to the auto show, a coordinated effort of precision driving in cars ranging from the oldest Storm had ever made to the latest electric super sedan, from race cars to radical concepts, and from modest street cars to insane performance editions.
Leading the pack was the eldest car in the lineup, hurtling down the street to where Storm’s designated area was located.
Shortly following that was the bright yellow Demon GRX, V12 screaming and howling to the crowd as it kept the tires spinning most of the way to the destination, with the 8th place ribbon from the Dalnit-Bralka Rally of 1965 showing proudly, having been hung around the rear view mirror.
Luke himself was behind the wheel of the 2011 Storm Wildcat, in Envy trim. Having practiced in the parking lot of their Nevada Assembly Plant, Luke felt comfortable enough pulling the handbrake turn next to the priceless Demon rally car, settling the poison-green beast next to the much louder and significantly more obnoxious rally machine.
Following not much further behind was the nearly-silent Arc Blue sedan, the Shadow. The driver unsettled the car with a practiced flick of the wheel and sent the electric sedan into a heavy slide, aided by the extra weight in the trunk.
The last car to arrive made a terrifying sound as it approached. The Pirahna Concept vehicle was Luke’s little project, a completely mental idea based on placing two small V8 engines into the same car.
Once all the cars had been parked, Luke opened the trunk of the Shadow, where he removed a folded up engine stand, followed by one other item for display. At the same time, promotional information was put out for the Shadow, and cards for the other cars available.
Luke grabbed the microphone, understanding the location was far bigger than he could cover with his own audio output without risking damage, then said, “Storm Automotive has never been to one of these auto shows before. Thereby, I knew we had to make an impression, one that would be remembered throughout the event. While our cars may not be as memorable as those of our competitors here today, and while others will undoubtedly attempt the same sort of stunts, I ask that you consider checking out what we have to offer.”
He motioned toward the Arc Blue Shadow, then said, “We have listened to the enthusiasts and the environmentalists. While this Shadow is purely electric, we will have other versions available soon. Some of you may remember the 10 year anniversary edition, the one that packed a thousand horsepower AluStar III V8 under the hood. We will have 4, 6, and 8 cylinder Hybrids available again, and we will also have those engines available without hybrid technology. Our other cars on display are those that have some significance to the company. The Pirahna Concept is, well, one of my projects, an idea that I’ve been working on for quite some time, and while the technology is far from viable right now, I can honestly say that having one good thing is great, but two is better.”
A little appetizer for the incoming onslaught of world premieres…
Cavallera has confirmed to journalists at Detroit that they will be showcasing, however they plan to turn up by the 12th of January and have a display open to the very last day, the 22nd.
Arzami Des Voitures would like to present before the Arzami stage the MS-014, or HUD Concept in its entirety. The main point of this vehicle is not the engine, or the design. It would be the Heads-Up Display stretching the entire dome. This is the advancement needed for self-driving cars, as it allows the driver and passengers to relax slightly, as the car used these display units, such as traffic tracking, and lane assist.
This Concept has a high chance of finding it’s tech in the next series of ADV Luxury vehicles. ADV are also working closely with international tech companies to help advance the idea and application of Self-Driving vehicles. We hope to have a self-driving vehicle hit the road for mass sale by 2020.

Airborne Automotive’s stand, 08.07.2017
Everything’s quiet. At morning all of the cars to be showcased drive on the exposition - they’re delivered on wheels after 614 mile journey from New York’s JFK Airport to Detroit. The exposition was opened at 9 AM local time, and at 10 AM first guests were coming for scheduled presentation at 11 AM.
11 AM. Press conference starts. Airborne’s Japanese marketing manager, widely known as Mei Onashikara goes on the stand and speaks, pointing at cars:
Hello people of Detroit! How are you? here are some thumbs up in the audience. Okay, okay. But my primary goal here is not to make new friends, however I would like to, but I need to present to you Airborne Automotive’s new car that hits Japanese market after thirty years of being absent there and as well to remain probably Hypera’s worst pain in the arsehole, our sportscar prototype, Aquila, which can be legally shown after cough twenty-five years. So, maybe let’s begin with it?
1990 Airborne Aquila

Mei: This is, folks, Airborne Aquila, probably one of most controversial cars of Airborne. Created in early 1990 with massive help with Hypera’s engineer, Lauritz Magnussen from Sweden which got fired and went to Airborne for better money for his job. So, well, he continued to work with all them, secretly using projects of unfinished Hypera’s prototype. In final, when the car got presented at late 1990 people from Hypera noticed that Aquila is WAY TOO similar to their project and investigated the case. In final Aquila was confirmed as a unpermitted copy of Hypera’s car, which caused Airborne Automotive to pay massive amount of money for this to Hypera, as well they needed to destroy all Aquilas and it’s projects and in government this case was ended in 1991 by telling Airborne to do things above. But, well, there was one employee which found a hideout near company’s secret track which was built at the time, and put it LITERALLY UNDER THE ROAD, plus even without CEO’s knowledge. But, since the case was cancelled anyway on 31st December 2016 we can legally show the car here and later in the museum.
But, let’s go to technicals - Aquila itself is perfect base for rally car - it has compact inline 6 engine with 1.6 liter capacity - probably one of smallest inline sixes ever - generating something above 240 horsepower. This wouldn’t be of course possible if turbocharging wasn’t used. Another interesting thing about this sportscar is that it has AWD, of course because copy, but also has pushrod suspension! If it would enter production by then, who knows, it may be first Airborne with pushrod suspension that went into production? But nevermind, if we talk about performance - this setup, with somewhat light body could push the car to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and it could reach 255 km/h. But, let’s go to another car.
- Oh, and before I go to another car. Yo Hypera, have you noticed tyre marks on your whole, fucking, showroom?! laughs
2017 Airborne Yujin
Mei: Uhh, Yujin. Our second try at producing kei cars, and it’s pretty nice. It was designed to be somewhat everyday kei with sporty touch. It features sporty interior, standard entertainment - because who the fucking hell needs car like Tesla? If you want an iPad, just buy iPad for fucks sake! But, let’s go back to polite, chill presentation. Japanese version of Yujin Coupe features high-revving, yet still reliable and economical 0.66 liter inline 3 without turbocharging which generates 62 hp and can rev to 8700 RPM. This, combined with low curb weight below metric tonne and 6 gear manual gearbox can give nice results of 13.5 seconds to 100 km/h and electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h to comply with Japanese regulations. We also have European version, which uses 1.1 litre inline 4 with turbocharging from our Mimas base car. With 98 hp and shorter gear ratios Yujin EU can reach 9.7 seconds to 100 km/h at cost of top speed, which is only 166 km/h. Everything is the same as in Japanese version, well, except position of steering wheel * laughs *
Mei points at Yujin Cabrio and speaks: Well, this is our convertible Yujin, sadly available only in Japan, but if you live in Europe you probably won’t have much problem to import it - it is just not available on mass production in this part of the world. Actually it has same equipment to coupe Yujins and features the same drivetrain and underneath components as standard coupe, so well. However, it has stiffer sway bars to comply with reduced body stiffness and actually now sway bars are like taken from a racecar, they’re even more stiff than they were in F15 Patricia. Seriously.
Performance wise, this car is slower than Yujin coupe - it has 15 seconds to 100 km/h time and can reach 174 km/h. You can also close your roof while driving, but you can close it up to 30 km/h, otherwise the roof will probably detach and gooo awaaaay, like your hoooooopes… laugh
But let’s get serious, here we have serious bomb of the show, my very own design which I designed from pure boredom and fact that this annoying old mexican Cossarini was gone on holidays. Let me present to you, S340 C1!
Here Mei uncovers S340 concept. Everyone takes photos and probably even after 1 minute after presenting the car is now everywhere in social media. After that Mei speaks again, this time about this concept.
This car is something that wouldn’t go into production in this exact form, but it was made as sort of manifest what design direction you can expect in S models. We’re not going anywhere from pure manual experience and natural aspiration of the engine. Instead, we’re keen on VVT and Direct Injection systems, which give better economy and better power, better everything! According to traditions written by our precedessors, the choice for drivetrain couldn’t be different - 3.4 litre V6 engine with direct injection and without turbos generating 314 horsepower and revving to eight thousand RPMs. Suspension-wise, we featured active sport double wishbone suspension which has been refined for sports use. And, I guess it’s reliable even in concept form if it drove 614 miles in winter through eastern USA, right? We haven’t tested it’s top speed yet, so company bases on computer calculation of 268 km/h. However, we could test acceleration. 5.3 seconds to 100 km/h from standstill and 2.9 seconds from 80 to 120 km/h. S340 features premium equipment with digital HUD instead of classic speedometer and tachometer and has enlarged front windshield splitted in two parts, so you can open the sunroof. Nice, isn’t it?
