One Last Hurrah [FINAL RESULTS]

Team mushroom cloud
Day -5

Bill: Mail! Aunt Toni , why have you got mail here?
Toni: Who is it from?
Bill: It says… oh, it’s the race organisers.
Toni opens the letter and reads the instructions.
Toni: What are the odds? Know we know where we start from. It’s some wildlife reserve. In 5 days. That’s plenty of time.
Checks were made, things were bought, stuff was packed.

Day 0
Mushroom cloud manged to find a place a short drive from the starting location. Which is a good thing, because apparently it’s legitimately freezing outside, not something they get a lot of back in Oz.
7AM, Bill knocks on Toni’s room door.
Bill: Up and at 'em.
Wookiee taps Bill on the shoulder
Wookiee: Way ahead of you. Car’s loaded and warming up. Figured we’d let you catch a few minutes more.
Bill: Don’t sneak up on me like that!
_ A voice from the car, parked down below_
Toni: Chop chop. The sooner we get the, the more we can learn about who’s going to beat us.
Bill: Don’t we know who entered? I’s there a website, or a list or something?
Wookiee: Maybe, maybe not. I prefer the element of surprise…

Immediately prior to race start.
Toni: Okay, boys. You’ve had a good look at what’s here. What do you think our chances are?
Wookiee: I’ll open with 100:1 against. Proper 4 wheel drives, half-arsed utes, taxis and turbos.
Bill: I says 18:1. There are 18 of them and 1 of us.
Wookiee: That’s not how probability works! How the hell do you run your business?

10:00-12:00
The starter gives the cue and the competitors all set off on their journey.
As they approach (and, subsequently, pass) the Truckling on the side of the road, Bill says: “Shit! It must be cold out there. Poor bastard’s turned blue!”
Wookiee reaches from the back seat and gives him a quick smack in the head.

12:00-2:00
Toni is busily concentrating on the icy conditions as the boys start making jokes about the Canadish, eh? Like this…
Wookiee: What do Canadians get on their tests?
Bill: Dunno. What do Canadians get on their tests?Wookiee: Eh’s!

Team Thunder Taxi, Part 2

Somewhere in Quebec

Jack was driving along at a moderate pace when Chris informed him about where the next waypoint would be.

“So, just a hundred miles in and no serious issues on the way to Montreal.”

Bob replied, “That’s true for us, and most other teams, but clearly not all of them. I’m hearing rumors that one of our rivals lost some time due to mechanical problems, although they could still make it up quickly.”

Vince concluded with: “Don’t get too nervous yet. We should arrive in Montreal very soon. For now, just concentrate on your driving.”

And so the Thunder Taxi continued its relentless march to Montreal and beyond.

Team Moss Boss

After pumping the Townsend’s tank full, Hank took over in the driver’s seat for a planned change. He took a few moments to adjust the seat and mirrors to his liking, then set up his phone on the dash mounted clamp for its turn as the GPS device.

Kyle returned from somewhere out of sight, where he had been calling his boss back.

“Everything OK?” Hank asked.

“Yeah. It’s squared away. I just need to send out a couple emails tonight after we stop for the night.”

Hank nodded and turned the key, and the engine came to life with no drama.

“Ah, crap,” Kyle muttered.

“What’s wrong?”’

“Weather report. Possible snow between Kingston and Sudbury.”

Hank cracked a smile. “Doesn’t bother me. Front wheel drive. Those rear drive teams might be in for a fun time though.”

Team V6 Vandals - 12-2p - “Catching Up”

“Hey, I think we’re in CB range of a few people, Luke.” Amy said. “At least, we’re right next to that beastly old-school station wagon.”

“Got it.” Luke said. Jake leaned forward and turned their radio on as well, though kept the volume low at first, only to jump back in his seat at the horrifying burst of fuzzy noise and loud electrical hum.

“Oh. Right. 4 watts at the antenna. Not 40.” Luke said, dialing back the power and trying again. “Apologies for that. Had my radio cranked up well above the limits. Don’t suppose I can get a relay on a weather check?” Luke said, this time coming in loud-and-clear, not just loud.

“Damn near blew our ears off with it.” someone replied, though Luke wasn’t entirely sure who, as he hadn’t been socializing with the other teams as much.

“Well, look at that. We’re in CB range. Milestone complete.” Cody said, grinning.

Day One, 10AM to 2PM

Day One, 2PM to 4PM, Somewhere near Cornwall, Ontario

Montreal passed without incident, Royal Mount Chalet was a nice historical site but we just got our pics and bolted. Still no signs of fellow racers but we don’t mind being alone; competitors tend to get in the way…

The open road towards Cornwall was also uneventful, lovely scenery and a lack of traffic being the mainstay of our trip so far, but upon reaching Cornwall our first logistics exercise was thrust upon us!

A: “Well, all good things must come to an end, so Pierre, I need you to fire up Google and find us a fuel stop”

Startled out of a daydream, I opened my phone and did a quick search.

P: “Follow this road and a few k’s ahead is a MacEwen’s located in Long Sault.”

A: “OK, sounds like a plan… Because we’re running on fumes!”

P: “Fumes… Andrew ya moron!!! What do you think you were doing???”

A: “I wanted to see how long the tank will last! Besides, it’s not like we don’t have any spare fuel”

P: “Just lay off the gas or else you’ll be pushing this shit heap all by yourself!”

A: “OK, ok, it won’t happen again… Sorry”

Suddenly aware of every mechanical noise, the scenery went from pleasant to menacing as we’d inadvertently overstretched our fuel window. Every lurch, bump and hesitation sparked new fears that we’d run dry and have to waste precious time filling the tank from our reserve. I wasn’t really mad at Andrew, we had to know how long the fuel would last, but we should have planned it out better. Fingers crossed!

TO BE CONTINUED

Distance covered: 103 miles
Overall distance: 275 miles
Fuel state: Low!!!
Overall fuel used: One tank (almost)
Morale: +1 (+2) Canada is a really nice place!
Fatigue: +5 (+6) Six hours non-stop in a budget coupe… You do the math!

Blake: I’m just saying, you’re not doing your vacation any favors if you’re going to be stressing over this.

Zach: I know, but this whole thing seems sketchy to me. I mean, I find potential evidence of embezzling, and next thing I know, my boss is thrown in jail.

Marc: There’s always the possibility that she is guilty.

Zach: True, but I doubt it. I mean, I mentioned bringing it to her attention and my supervisor shot that down quickly. Almost like he was too eager to keep any knowledge of it from spreading.

Luigi: He may have been simply trying to keep her from finding out there was any suspicion, otherwise she could destroy any evidence.

Zach: Maybe, well, if Frank can find it, then we can make the accounts public.

15:00

Marc: It’s chilly out there.

Blake: Hey, that’s that truck. That Team Redneck.

Luigi: Looks like their freezing.

Marc: Think we should give them a hand?

Blake: That’s a T-25, I’ve worked on a few of those.

Luigi: If we can meet up at the next fuel stop, I can take a look at their heating, at least try to keep them from freezing to death.

Marc: Fine by me, we’re starting to run low on gas anyway. (Grabs CB) Team Redneck, this is Team Outriders, you got your ears on? I say again Team Redneck, this is Team Outriders, you got your ears on?

(If Team Rednecks have a CB they are free to respond. My guys are willing to take a quick look at the heater and offer a possible fix)

Team Thunder Taxi, Part 3

En route to Kingston, Ontario

Jack: The tank’s just one-quarter full now… Are we in danger of running out?

Chris: No. We should have enough left in the tank to reach the next stop.

Bob: There’s no real need to take it easy, but we shouldn’t be too ambitious either. Waiting until we have made it farther south to up the pace might be a good idea.

Vince: Jack, whatever you’re doing right now, remember this: Being in a FWD or AWD car is no guarantee of making it through the snow safely. We’ll also need every ounce of skill to avoid a crash in such conditions, but since our car is rear-drive, that makes our task tougher. At least the Thunder Taxi’s chassis is well-sorted for roads like these - not too much oversteer, but not too much understeer either.

With that, Jack promised to remember Vince’s advice and continued to concentrate on his task as he and his crew headed further and further south towards the border.

Team Shitbox Brothers

(You know the drill with the accents)

It had been a couple of hours since the injector made the engine misfire. With this breakdown sorted, the two brothers were picking their pace up again. It wasn’t long before they caugh the wagon driven by Team Hartcour-Entwhistle.

Alejandro: “Hey, look, it’s that team. We should say hello before overtaking them.”

Ana lined their car with the wagon, lowering her window. Filling her lungs, she yelled at them.

Ana: “You’ll have to do better than that, and stop driving like grannies…I mean, sorry!”

Ana then accelerated slightly to overtake them, closing her window again.

Ana: “There, we’re picking the pace up!”

She then let the engine coast, to save them some fuel.

Alejandro: “Quarter tank, eh? Guess we’ll be doing our first refuel and lunch stop soon. Let’s keep the pace for now though.”

And once again, the Shitbox Brothers dissapeared in the horizon to Anarchy road by Carpenter Brut.

Mopey: I DO!

No RP this time around. In a nutshell, the boys are getting hungry and making plans to stop for dinner in Kingston, then planning how far they will push tonight.

On that note, everyone should probably be thinking about strategy for overnight rest, if you don’t want me to push your teams to utter exhaustion. Team Moss Boss alluded to a possible snowstorm coming up soon, so getting too tired might not be a good idea. PM me with any plans for your team. Also note: it’s too cold to camp/car camp, so find a hotel or motel that suits your needs.

Team V6 Vandals - D1 2-4p - “Loud and Clear”

“It cruises nicely, that’s for sure.” Luke said, breaking the silence they’d been under since they dropped out of CB range again with the other teams.

“True enough. But you realize you’ve got a glowing fuel light on the dash, don’t you?” Amy replied, giving a light grin.

“Yes. But we’re within range of Preston, and there will be gas there.” Luke responded.

“Don’t suppose you’ve planned a rest stop any time soon?” Cody asked. “Because unlike you, I feel pain, and this back seat is not comfortable.”

“Yeah, and I got word from the other teams down alternate channels that the weather’s gonna be shit. We’re only front-wheel-drive, you can’t run through a snow-storm with front-wheel-drive if it gets bad, and it’s too cold out there for camping.” Jake added.

Amy sighed, then said, “How the hell did you two even finish in time with that mindset? Luke knows what he’s doing.”

There was a quiet screech of tires as the Truckling settled next to a gas pump, and the raspy V6 went silent as Luke pulled the lever for the fuel door and stepped out. He spun the gas cap loose, set it on top of the cab, and dropped the nozzle in before selecting Premium fuel. With the tank full, Luke put the cap back on, closed the fuel door, then walked inside the gas station to collect his receipt because the printer was frozen up.

He walked back out with a bag of groceries, then settled into the cab again. “Here. Should take the edge off of the sleep, give us one more two-hour segment worth of driving.” Luke said, passing some energy drinks to the rear seat passengers, and one to Amy, before handing out bags of chips. “And I didn’t know what flavor of chips you’d prefer, so I just got salted ones.”

“Thanks, Luke. But, seriously, rest stop when?” Jake asked.

“Probably at the end of the next two hour segment, about 8 PM.”

Marc: Fine by me. I don’t know what happened, It all just seems a blur.

(Nothing happens between then and when they reach the gas station.Blake fills the car while Marc, Zach and Luigi get out to stretch their legs. Luigi and Zach go in to buy some snacks.)

Blake: Okay, I think we need to talk game plan. Previously we simply camped to save on costs. However, with how cold it is, that’s not a viable option.

Zach: So we’ve got to look into lodging.

Luigi: Not going to huff it through the night this time?

Blake: No, there’s talks of a potential snowstorm, I don’t want to drive through that when I’m dead ass tired.

Zach: I don’t blame ya. Plus we’re not FWD or AWD like those other teams.

Marc: Bah, horse shit! That doesn’t mean dick if you have no idea what you’re doing. Between us we’ve got at least a century of driving experience, including winter.

Zach: You’re saying the car will handle fine in the snow despite being rear wheel drive?

Marc: It won’t be easy, but we’ll manage. For one thing there’s all the shit we’ve packed in the trunk, that’s plenty of weight on the rear axle.

Blake: Then there’s the shingles.

Luigi: Why do we have shingles in the trunk? I don’t think this trip calls for any roofing.

Marc: They’re for traction you retard! You lay them down in front of the wheels and the tires grip them allowing you to move when stuck.

Luigi: No kidding!

Blake: Or shooting then out from behind, I’ve seen that happen.

Marc: It’s not a perfect system, but the point is we’ll manage.

(The team departs from the gas station with Blake behind the wheel)

Team Thunder Taxi, Part 3

Preston, Ontario

While refueling, Jack tells his team about where they should stop next - if they actually choose to do so.

“So, if we make a rest stop, where should we do it?”

Vince’s response was curt and to the point. “I’ll check my physical and electronic maps for suitable locations, starting now.”

Chris continued: “Hmmm. It seems like one of the teams is out already… but at least they went out with a bang, literally or not.”

Bob paused for a few seconds and replied: “You may be right. Emergency services have been scrambled to respond to reports of a burning car as we speak.”

After refueling, the Thunder Taxi resumed its journey south, while its crew began pondering the location of its first rest stop. Fatigue had not yet taken its toll, but it will eventually, unless they take a break sooner or later.

Spanners: So, Mrs E, what time are we going to stop to rest?

Gran: We’ll look at Fort Henry and then push on until about 10pm……unless you need to stop earlier?

Spanners: I’m fine. We’ll stop at Henry then, have a bite to eat and then find a motel for the night. I’ve spent time sleeping in the snow and I don’t recommend it for a lady of your……status!

Gran: What are you insinuating young man?

Mopey: Gran, what he’s trying to say is, “Mrs E, you’re OLD and the cold will probably kill you!”

Spanners: It’d probably kill you quicker kiddo! Mrs E would have the sense to wrap up….you wouldn’t notice the cold and we’d find an icicle clutching a phone!

Mopey: My weather app, you know the one that tells us how cold places are, says that there’s a snowstorm coming in.

Spanners: Remember what I said about the app and your phone?

Gran: Well at least we know that the conditions are going to get worse. There’s no need to take that tone with George and I believe you owe him an apology.

Spanners: Sorry Mopey.

Gran: DAVID!

Spanners: Sorry Mrs E….sorry George. When we stop we’d be best to put some of the foil sheets and a couple of blankets over the engine. We probably won’t be able to get the car under cover and it’ll give the engine a bit of protection during the night…….and we’ll put a note on the dashboard to remind us…….you ever seen a blanket in a turning engine? Not a pretty sight I can tell you!

Team Bio
Day One, 2PM to 4PM

Frantically searching for a fuel station, it was only when we passed through Iroquois that I realised we were lost!

A: “Where’s this fuel station buddy? We need gas pronto!!!”

P: “Good news and bad news… Good news is we get a decent range out of our tank; bad news is that we’ve already passed the town I looked up!”

A: “Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit! Keep your eyes peeled and I’ll hyper-mile as much as I can…”

We continued onwards, looking for someplace to refuel, looking for somewhere to get out and stretch our legs… We were saved when we saw a Mr Gas branded fuel station in Prescott. Once we filled up the car’s fuel tank I went in to pay for the fuel and get some local advice on where a couple of travellers could get a good meal.

P: “Pump seven please…”

Att: “Cash or card?”

P: “Card thanks”

Att: “Card here please”

P: “Thanks … Say, you wouldn’t happen to know of a decent place to get a meal at short notice, would you?”

Att: “Sure do, hit up the Red George Pub, food’s good and the prices are reasonable.”

P: " Thanks, I’ll check it out"

We looked up the Pub and had a great dinner out of the cramped car and in the warm pub. We relaxed for half an hour then paid our bill and set off again. Andrew was making good time but it was clear we’d need to stop for the night. The weather was fine but the cold, slippery conditions combined with the reports of a snowstorm on the pub television gave us an uneasy feeling…

A: “We need to be off the road by 8PM tonight. Night driving is bad enough but dying in a ditch because of a snowstorm isn’t my plan for 2018!”

P: “I’m right with ya buddy. I say we stop early, get a good sleep then hit the road early tomorrow, once we know what’s happening with the weather.”

A: “That settles it then; Google us up somewhere to stay!!!”

Team Shitbox Brothers

Day 1 - Picking the pace up.

Ana keeps driving as the sunsets swiftly approaches. Alejandro is checking his phone in the meantime.

Alejandro: “Fuck.”

Ana: “Anything wrong?”

Alejandro: “Apparently Team X/2000s’ car is on flames. They’ll have to retire. The turbo started spraying scaldingly hot oil and the car caught fire.”

Ana: “Oh boy…wasn’t expecting that. Know how it feels, having to drop out from the race, hell, it happened to us. Anyways, what was that you were saying about a snowstorm before?”

Alejandro: “Ah, yes, I came up with a strategy. So as driving in a snowstorm fatigued is going to be dangerous, we’ll be on the road until 8PM, then we’ll stop at a motel or hotel or whatever and rest for the night.”

Ana: “Don’t forget to protect the engine from the possible snowfall.”

Alejandro: “Will place some film inside the grille then remove it in the morning, don’t worry about it. I’ll also make sure it’s correctly kept in place.”

Ana: “Aight, then we’re sorted. Let’s go.”

And the brothers kept driving and driving. Still many miles separated them from victory, but things were going smooth so far, to Eden by Scandroid, remixed by Waveshaper.

Morale: +1 (Well, well, well…not too much new).
Fatigue: +6 (Meeeeeh, let’s have a rest soon).
