2023 WALDERSEE RITTER

Because sometimes, the outgoing model is the best you can get.

There was a time when you could buy a sporty and practical two-door liftback with a real backseat. There was a time when the standard engine had four cylinders, not three. There was a time when a car’s face was still a face, and not a block of granite, and it was painted a nice and bright color at no charge. There was a time when engine powerbands were wide enough for a robust seven-speed with lots of overdrive. Believe it or not, there was even a time you could see well out of your car.

Was? Sorry, we meant is, because that time is now. It is now that you can buy a car with all those fondly-remembered old-fashioned idiosyncracies - but also with a consumption of 5.2l/100km despite an output of 225ps; an emissions tax obligation of nothing; a state-of-the art entertainment system with a driving assists package and HUD; semi-active magnetorheological dampers; and the best value proposition Waldersee offers today, at 26 700€. Undefeated, unsurpassed and still on sale, your new yet intimately familiar car, the 2023 Waldersee Ritter K25*.

*1.8 liter turbo comes out to "2.5" as per the ol' 1.4x motorsport multiplier

2023 Volaro Verlyn Black Edition

Before their hybrids, there was this.

As Volaro's parent company phases out all their gasoline luxury cars in favor of hybrids and full EVs, the Verlyn was left untouched until 2025 to compete against other smaller, premium(ish) cars.

With minor updates each year to keep it reasonably desirable, and the price being lowered yearly since 2022, anybody looking for a premium model with a sensible window tag could find it in the Verlyn.

At $26,700, with the Black Edition package adding $500 to the starting price of the 3.2-liter model ($26,200, 2023 base price), the Verlyn Black Edition replaces all brushed aluminum accents with black plastic and adds ventilation to the already heated front seats and heating to the back seats.

More photos.

ROUND 1

Freude XF3 S4

@nate21

The car’s rear suspension feels unsettled, and its stopping distance is concerning at 46m from 100 km/h. The 10-speed gearbox seems unnecessary, and overall reliability is questionable. Fuel economy is disappointing at 7.9l/100km. Safety features are lacking, but it offers a sporty feel for an SUV. Car’s design is polarizing; it has its unique charm but could benefit from some improvements. A more sculpted body and a better balance of proportions could enhance its overall appeal. - not considered

Maple Silver Edition

@Ch_Flash

The car has high service costs and falls into a costly tax bracket. Fuel economy is very poor, and the 7-speed automated manual gearbox is unreliable and not smooth at city speeds. It looks outdated with overdesigned front and unimpressive rear. It feels sporty to drive, but overall, it has significant drawbacks. - not considered

Amun pyramid

@Sosy31

The car’s design is decent, but the red paint looked faded. The I6 engine sounds luxurious, but it’s a 2.0L with outdated turbocharging, causing lag. The 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox and limited top speed disappoint. It has good brakes and safety but suffers from body roll. Overall, the car falls short of true luxury and modern standards. - not considered

Ilaris Ion MSi

@shibusu

The rear design is disappointing, with odd proportions and a dated appearance. The front is its saving grace. Adequate acceleration from the boxer engine but held back by the old-fashioned 6-speed automatic gearbox. Comfortable interior, good service costs, and high reliability. Decent fuel economy, but below average in safety equipment. - not considered

Mara Kavaler 2.0 LKE

@AndiD

The car provides a comfortable and drivable experience with good safety and reliable performance. It has decent fuel economy and a strong track record for dependability. However, its lack of sportiness and plain design with odd color and wheel choices might not appeal to enthusiasts. The car exhibits some body roll and could use stronger brakes for added confidence during sudden stops. Overall, it is a practical and reliable choice for everyday transportation, but it falls short in terms of design and performance for those seeking a more engaging driving experience. - not considered

Primus Merit 200T

@Happyhungryhippo

The car’s suspension and gearing could be better. Service costs are low, but prestige and reliability ratings are lower. It offers a sporty feel, but comfort needs improvement. Design-wise, the front lacks identity, and the rear looks dated. The car blends in with others and lacks distinctiveness. - not considered

VCV Vernalia 2.0T

@Knugcab

It is safe and easy to drive but lacks sportiness and prestige compared to other cars. Comfort is below average, and predicted reliability is average. Fuel economy disappoints. Front design receives criticism for an oversized grille and small wheels. However, the side profile and body molding are appreciated. The rear design concept is good but poorly executed. Overall, the car has its strengths but needs improvement in various aspects, making it a mixed choice in its class. - not considered

Clari Eau'Aigu Prime 2023

@Vento

The car has significant drawbacks, including excessive body roll, poor safety features, and subpar brakes. It lacks prestige and has a less-than-stellar reliability record, with a laggy engine and limited power. Despite this, it offers good drivability and comfortable luxury interior. However, the overall design is unattractive, with small door mirrors, low door handles, and unsatisfactory front and rear aesthetics. - not considered

Swanson 317TPAF

@Ludvig

The car review highlights a displeasing front overhang, low positioning of headlights, and oversized wheels. The front design appears futuristic yet dated, and the red color choice is questionable. On the positive side, the car provides a sporty driving experience, reasonable service costs, and high practicality with above-average fuel economy. However, it falls short as a rear-wheel-drive car with an open differential, lacks prestige compared to other options, and offers only average safety without advanced features. - not considered

Compaq SWGT

@Bbestdu28

Positively, stopping distance, acceleration, and top speed are impressive, and the suspension is decent but firm. However, most stats are below average, and the use of sports tires results in exorbitant service costs and taxes. Comfort is lacking, and the car doesn’t feel particularly sporty. Safety and reliability are both below average, making it a questionable choice overall. - not considered

Allure S4

@DuceTheTruth100

The car has a dated appearance resembling a 90s concept car. It offers decent safety but falls short in comfort, prestige, and has a very stiff suspension. Fuel economy and reliability are disappointing, and service costs are higher than average. Overall, while safety is a plus, the car’s downsides make it a less appealing choice in its class. - not considered

Alira Sausalito

@HelloHi

The car has an intriguing design but raises doubts as a production model. The large wheels are unconventional. It suffers from horrendous fuel economy, high service costs, and an unrealistic roll angle. Safety and reliability are below average, while comfort and prestige are lacking. The unconventional chassis material is worth noting. On the positive side, it provides a sporty feel and decent practicality. - not considered
