Weird, Bad and Ugly Cars

And it looked like this before the facelift:

And like this for the next generation:

I’m just reminded of this…

The next generation actually looks good. But those lights on the previous one are just oversized.

The new generation one strip lights actually look good, but the over-stretched ones in the older gens…

Fiat 126 can be credited with pretty much putting the Polish people into cars. Of course, some Poles were driving before, and you did not even have to be a party member to do that. (My grandparents had an FSO Syrena 104, and had driven it until its frame rusted to the point of breaking in half). The 126, however, was the first car to be truly popular in Poland, and its impact can be compared to that of Fiat 500 in Italy, or Citroen 2CV in France.

Naturally, given its popularity, a huge market centered around this little fella arised. There was a camping trailer designed specifically to be able to be towed by 126’s 24hp two-cylinder engine. There was a “turbinka Kowalskiego”, a turbine mounted between the carburettor and intake ports, which was supposed to make the fuel mix more even (and improve the car’s performance) by whirling it. (Needless to say, this was bullshit, and all it did was fall apart and damage the engine). And then, there was this:

This is a Fiat 126p Wadera, a 126p-based kitcar from the late 80’s. Produced somewhere near Katowice, it pretty much made the car look more offroady…Yeah, that’s about it. Very similar in concept to your average crossover. Makes a Fiat 126p roughly as ugly as your average crossover as well. Includes a jeep-like fake grille, foreshadowing the Fiat-Chrysler relationship.

That looks like something I’d have to wait ten years after paying the full amount up front to get.

That actually looks pretty cool to me. :stuck_out_tongue:

Idk if i’ve said this before, but the design language of modern lamborghinis (especially the concepts) and the LaFerrari is kind of lazy/ugly to me.

Like to me it looks like they went to their designers and this conversation happened:

-Ferrari/Lamborghini: Hey! I want you to design the edgiest car there is!

-Designers: Like edgy looking or like full of edges, figuratively or literally?

-Ferrari/Lamborghini: BOTH.

I never understood the LaF hate. I thought they’ve been nailing it with designs these days. 458, F12, 488, FF, hell even the California looks good to me.

Lambos too, in fact I find the Huracan too underwhelming even.

What I despise with a passion is Mclaren.

I only think the transition of the LaF down to the front splitter was kinda cool. The curves of the McP1 in the rear are actually gorgeous. The rest is kinda meh. The 918 really doesn’t look appealing to me in anyway. Anyway after Ferrari did their thing with the LaF splitter they’ve pushed it onto the 458 limited edition and the 488. They all look the same. Just downright bland.

McLaren screwed up the rear end of the MP4-12C, then the 650 and 675 had the same, so still crap. The 570 has a nice butt but the headlights are just shoddily proportioned.

This. I so have to agree. Cars are just getting too many lines and they’re just become angular to the point of stabbing your eyes. Take a look at the Centenario or the Veneno. God, they are horrid.

One of my major problems that can be just pointed out in one go with the LaFerrari (besides the dumb name) is the fact that the side mirrors look like two selfiesticks with a clunky gopro at the end or alternatively like the antennae of an alien.

Why do you hate on Volvos @PottoGadd

It’s amazing!

Hmm, I seem to be at odds here. I actually like the angular Lamborghinis. The styling may be a satire on early stealth aircraft… but it looks good to me for a car of their class, and it stands out. I also consider it very talented design to employ so many different lines, that all do indeed flow with each other. The cars manage to not look “busy” at the same time either. I really dislike the “supercar” class in general… but I have to praise Lamborghini’s designs.

Funny, the rear of the MP4-12C is actually the only part of the car I find attractive; besides it’s Nissan derived engine (though I believe no part remains compatable if I recall correctly).

I have always disliked Ferrari. In the 60’s, when Ferrari actually built competetive cars, I still didn’t like them because Mr. Ferrari himself was a unique asshole. He pissed off Ford to the point of commissioning the build of the GT40 (beacause Ferrari wasted millions of dollars when he tore up Ford’s contract), and he pissed off Mr. Lamborghini to the point of starting his own car company. If someone isn’t familiar with that story; Mr. Lamborghini had problems with his Ferrari, and after multiple repairs, he met with Enzo Ferrari himself to discuss the issue. Well the conversation went sour, and Enzo said something to the effect of “Go back to making your tractors; you don’t know what you’re talking about”. Ferruccio Lamborghini then set out to prove Enzo Ferrari wrong. (I can’t guarantee this story is completely true, but I’ve seen renditions of it multiple times, with small details differing; such as the problem being either with the clutch or the brakes.)
Now Ferraris are poser’s cars, and the owners take after the creator.

One of the versions I heard of that story was Mr. Lamborghini throwing a tractor clutch into a Ferrari and phoning him up and saying “Hey, I fixed your car for you.” One Italian argument later and Lamborghini started making cars. Here’s something to think about, if Lamborghini started out making tractors, then perhaps John Deere will get into the supercar market.

Wow… Looks like someone took one of those mini Ferris Wheel carts, stuck wheels and an engine and said “Yeah, that’s fine.”

I don’t think even my grandma would drive that.

The reason why Ferrari FURIOUSLY rejected FoMoCo’s deal to buy off the former’s troubled company had to do with a “Special Clause” that required Don Enzo to relinquish his chair as Founder and CEO, something he was absolutely reluctant to do…until FIAT won the crown jewel in '69 with the old man still standing by his kingdom despite Ford’s final victory at LeMans as promised by the late Henry Ford 2nd.

…hopefully that’s the official account of the story in a nutshell…

What I read was a bit different. Ferrari agreed to give up his company, but Ford disallowed him to continue leading Ferrari’s racing department; specifically from competing in the races that Ford was participating in. That was supposedly the reason he dropped the contract.

HHRs INFURIATE me!

I appreciate retro styling. I really do. 5th and 6th Gen Mustangs are some of the best body styles out of this millenium. The trick with retro styling is that you have to choose a good one to start from.

This:

Was never a good body style; it was a utility vehicle. Why would you ever think it was a good idea to style a passenger car off of it?

Honestly, I would add all of Chevrolet’s new millennium body styles to the list of “Weird, bad, and ugly” because they are just all hideous save from the 2014-present Impala. But if I had to select one that is especially bad:

The 2 door Cobalt. The 4 door is fine but god the 2 door… who thought up those gaudy tail lights? Every time i find myself behind one of these in traffic and half-hope i get broadsided and killed so I won’t have to stare a the ass of a 2 door cobalt anymore.
