CSR 167: Three-Body Problem [FINALS]

Based on a real argument

Hong Kong, In a mansion at the Victoria Peak area, 2025

It cannot be said for most people in this era, but Li Hoi Ting and Arthur Newell are living an extraordinarily good life by all counts

Since her promotion to the CFO of one of the most prominent healthcare companies in Asia, Li Hoi Ting (Her foreign colleagues call her Angela), she is now a member of the 0.01% club in terms of wealth and power. Her Husband Arth isn’t quite up there with her, but his income from being a top real estate agent is still a number most people cannot even begin to imagine.

It’s a sunny day on the weekend, and Arthur just went back home from dropping their kid at the Piano class, at a time where most kids in other parts of the world would have a nice, relaxing day off from school. After this class, he also has a violin class and a “Gentlemen’s Etiquette” class on the same day. Quite a bit of work for a 8-year old kid, but quite typical of an uber-elite Asian based family like this.

“You know, our kid really has grown up.” Says Angela Li, lying on a designer’s deckchair beside the luxury swimming pool in their mansion.

“For sure, I remember the time where he couldn’t even play the piece that even a regular university student can play, but now he can almost play every Paganini pieces.”

“Still a long way to go though.”

As good as their lives are, they still have something quite important missing.

“We’ve talked about this many times already, but isn’t it about time we get that sorted?”

“Get what sorted?”

“You know, the fact that you have like 10 cars, but…”

“…none of them is practical enough now”

“Yeah.”

While he has lived in HK for decades at this point, his childhood in the UK still makes him a car enthusiast at heart. This is why Arthur has a collection of cars, ranging from classics to modern supercars. However, none of cars in Arthur’s collection remotely has any kind of practicality, and the most practical car in his collection is a two-seater Sendo Friesia.

Even at one of the highest level private schools in HK, everytime Arthur pulls up in the Friesia to pick his child up, he bathes in the jealous glare of other parents. This however won’t last much longer.

“Your Sendo, it wouldn’t even fit his spare violin, and you know that he at least need 2 spare violins, 4 spare bows, 20 textbooks and one of our maids for helping him with his instruments!”
”No, I totally agree. So we should get something that is Luxurious…”

“Has enough space…”

“Opulent enough for us…”

“Makes others jealous…”

“So we should get-”

“We should totally get-”

“A Luxury Sedan!”

“A Luxury MPV!”

“…”

“With a sedan, we won’t have the space! All my friends at the company have luxury minivans for this reason!” Angela is quite insistant on having a luxury MPV.

“But while they’re big, minivans use cheap components for their chassis! So they do not hold a candle to the luxury sedans in terms of being good to drive!”

“The new ones are really good though! I’ve been in so many of my friend’s MPVs, and we definitely need one!”

“I really want something with a V8 or V12 though, and its not like they don’t have space, we can totally make it work…”

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

“Shoot! I forgot Will is coming over!”

Both couples rushed downstairs to the main gate and welcomed their old friend, William.

“Long time no see! I heard you two are arguing about something?”

“Ahaha, don’t worry about it, we are just discussing about what new car should we buy.”

“Oh?”

Angela and Arthur explained their own viewpoints to William.

“Hmm, that’s definitely a bit of a dilemma, since the practicality is pretty important, but it’s also hard to give up the presteige of a top level sedan…what about SUVs?”

“SUVs? You mean those entry level luxury crossovers that every middle class family has?”

“Hahaha, I couldn’t imagine you guys driving something cheap like that. What I’m talking about is one of those SUVs for chauffering, with the 4 seats and everything. It has a lot of space, but they also drive pretty good.”

The couple seems to be moved with this idea, as they both went silent and thought for a bit.

“But MPVs still have more space though.”
”But sedans still drive better than SUVs.”

“Man, you two are as stubborn as always.”

As you have seen, Angela and Arthur has quite the dilemma when it comes to buying their new car, with qualities like being a prestegious driving machine and having a ton of practicality conflicting with each other.

It is your job to come up with a vehicle that can fulfill this matter. Realistically (No, we don’t want a 600hp V12 Minivan), you cannot have something that fulfills both of their requirements perfectly well, so it will be all about comprimises.

You will be allowed 3 different body types for this challenge: MPV, SUV and Sedan.
Each body type has their own merits and downfalls, with SUV being more or less the middle ground.

See the ruleset in the post below.

Why not wagon?

Yeah I could see something like a panamera sport turismo fitting the bill of driving enjoyment, space and prestige

hoooly shit

I’m expecting that regardless of the body type chosen, the actual car must have 2 doors on each side, for a total of 4 or 5.

Prestigious Visuals

To even get an opportunity of test driving, it has to look the part. Anything less than beautiful and opulent would not make it very far.

[Overall design, cohesion, brand identity, visual character, “does it look high end enough?”]

Realism

Making something not very realistic is another great way to get binned.

Perceived Prestige

If their identity isn’t enough of a clue, Angela and Arthur has no intent on getting something that is “good enough”.

[Automation Prestige stat, use of quality on key components, and some lore and description about your company and car would be very welcomed, especially if this is your first time bringing this company to an Automation challenge.)

Comfort

Riding like its on a cloud is not a bonus, but a must at this price point.

Drivability

They already have plenty of vintage cars, they don’t need another handful car.

Safety

Especially important because they have a kid.

:gem_stone: :gem_stone: :gem_stone: :gem_stone:

Reliability

Breaking down in the middle of the road is not their idea of a “prestige” experience.

Practicality

The couple will decide if the great practicality of a MPV is a good tradeoff for its lack of prestige, and if the great prestige of a luxury Sedan is a good tradeoff for its relative lack of practicality.
[Automation Practicality Stat, physical size and shape of car (to a very limited degree)]

Sportiness (to a very limited degree)

While not looking for a corner carver, Arthur in particular does want something that is not completely dull to drive

Read the prologue, it will give you a better idea of the rather difficult customers you are dealing with.

Make sure you spend a good amount of time perfecting the design.

Each body type has their own advantages and disadvantages, so some will inheritly have better stats in one aspect than another. The buyers are fully aware of that, so don’t spend too much time deciding what body type to go for to absolutely minmax the stats.

Have fun building!

Is performance being weighed at all? I know they’re not looking for a sports car and that some performance-related metrics like engine size and top speed count toward prestige, but I wonder if adding some sort of separate performance category as a lower scoring priority might make sense?

This is equivalent to 95 RON in the rest of the world.

The exact compound chosen is theoretically free, but pure luxury-focused builds should suit medium compound tires just fine, while a more performance-oriented offering (especially if it’s a sedan) could get away with having sports compound tires instead.

I found this by complete chance, maybe worth looking into for realism pursposes

Only one octane number of petrol, 98
RON, is available in Hong Kong.

If that’s the only fuel type that will be made available for this round, then we should remind ourselves that 98 RON super unleaded is equivalent to 93 AKI.

Update: Added “Quality on key components” criteria under “Perceived prestige”

Why not? This is one of the few classes of car where V16s make sense to use.

If the use of V16s is not allowed in a challenge, then I’m assuming that it’s because the host doesn’t have the DLC key required for those, and/or their use is unrealistic in the context of the challenge’s rule set.

I’ve removed that rule now

No matter what Arthur ends up choosing, I don’t think he’ll sell the Friesia - He’d rather keep it for special occasions anyway.

And this round brings to mind CSR114), but with the client having the added option of being able to choose a minivan (in addition to SUVs and sedans).

Seems they’re looking for something “Special”
